Youth / Reserve Team Thread... 2010 - 2013

Re: Raheeeeeeeeem

Impressive stuff from Raheem against rubbish opposition. It won't do his confidence any harm anyway.

Re: Raheeeeeeeeem

Amongst this 'brighter future' thread should be added the names Flanagan, Robinson, Coady and Wilson. Kelly's already made it, but we've got a set of talented young defenders there.

Especially his tackling. But to be honest Southend we're bordering dirty at times.
They tried to take Coady out a couple of times during the game.

Re: Raheeeeeeeeem

Notice that the talented defenders mentioned are in line with Borello's theory that English/British players should be at the heart of the team to fight for the shirt.

Re: Raheeeeeeeeem

I'd love for Sterling to get some game time in the Premiership at the end of the season. Just to let him a feel of what it takes to play there, and for experience obvs.

He looks like he's grown a bit, but is still a bit tiny. Only just turned 16 though, he's got time on his side. Looks a fantastic talent. And we desperatly need a left winger.

Re: Raheeeeeeeeem

He looks tiny and very light. I reckon at least one more year before he should get a sniff.

Michael Owen was a similar size when he took the first team by storm.

Is he right footed?
yep, but crosses really well with both feet. that combination of excellent technique and lightning pace is usually an unstoppable combination in a footballer.

We shouldn't be training all our midfielders to play like Lucas, for God's sake.
I'm dreaming of a team of Lucas's..

Surely that should technically be a "a team of Lucai"?

Re: Raheeeeeeeeem

Those goals were class, especially the fourth. I must admit I'd kind of given up on getting excited about Sterling after Whitey said he reminded him of Jermaine Pennant at that age. But he looks a LOT faster, which is hugely important in the PL. He clearly also has good close control and great finishing ability. I would seriously think about putting him on the bench now - not for his benefit, but for ours. Who else do we have that come on and inject real pace in attack? Who would you rather see coming on in the 75th minute when we're a goal down - Jovanovic or Sterling? Kenny looked like he was thinking the same thing to me.

He won't stay beyond ten years so let's get the most out of him.

Re: Raheeeeeeeeem

reason to have talent on the bench

for:
* if things are going tits up someone young and hungry will try something that someone experienced probably wouldn't. kids are fearless. in the case of raheem, pace scares defenders and in the case of suso vision can open up defenses.

against:
* if they try something audacious and it doesn't come off then the reaction of the crowd may get to them. they don't have years of experience to draw on, they're kids.

Re: Raheeeeeeeeem

Against:

If he gets kicked not only will he end up in row z, but he's likely to start booing as well.

He also seems to be a very sound and level headed lad, and not someone who will say Ashely Cole when they're pulled over for drunk driving.
Thats a BIG difference when it comes to making it or not.

Re: Raheeeeeeeeem

Great news if true.

Liverpool boy-wonder Raheem Sterling is being given a dream ticket to join Kenny Dalglish’s Europa League squad – at the tender age of 16.

The teenage sensation has been rewarded for a stunning five-goal display in the FA Youth Cup with a place on the plane for tomorrow’s tie at Sparta Prague.

Attacking midfielder Sterling could be on the bench, and if he came on he would become the youngest player to ever appear for Liverpool.

The record is held by defender Jack Robinson, who made his debut at 16 years and 250 days against Hull last May.
Sterling will be just 16 years and 79 days old tomorrow.

He's apparently in the travelling squad, too. 🙂

Raheem Sterling could make his senior Liverpool debut on Thursday after being named in their Europa League squad for the trip to Sparta Prague.

Kenny Dalglish's decision to enlist Sterling for the journey to the Czech capital comes little over 24 hours after he witnessed the 16-year-old net five goals during the under 18's emphatic 9-0 thrashing of Southend United in the FA Youth Cup at Anfield.

At 16 years and 71 days, Sterling would become the youngest ever Reds player to appear at senior level should he feature on Thursday, eclipsing the previous record of 16 years and 250 days set by Jack Robinson during last season's final day draw at Hull City.

Robinson joins the Jamaican-born starlet, who arrived from Queens Park Rangers in February last year on an initial £500,000 deal, in the first-team party travelling to Prague as do fellow Academy graduates Jonathan Flanaghan and England under-18 captain Conor Coady.

Their inclusions combined with the current exploits of Liverpool's under-18 squad is testament to the groundwork laid by Dalglish in his capacity as academy ambassador in conjunction with Frank McParland, Jose Segura and Rodolfo Borrell - all recruited by former manager Rafael Benitez.

Looks like we could have a very young bench. Sterling, Robinson, Flanaghan, Coady.
