Youth / Reserve Team Thread... 2010 - 2013

Actually, it was a fairly interesting article - but I didn't totally agree with the author. His talk of over-playing the youngsters, and comparisons with Messi, Silva, Thuram. Well, how about Fowler and Owen? They turned out alright. The point is that there isn't a set formula. Sterling probably was over-played, fair enough, but other players may have missed out at Anfield through never being trusted to step up. Its one of the skills of a good manager, deciding when to blood a youngster, and when to rest him.

Maybe Rodgers has had his hand forced a little due to lack of a sufficient number of experienced players - but those players demand higher wages, are often demoralized if left out for a youngster, and can then let their careers drift off in mediocrity. As I say, its not an easy balance, and certainly not as formulaic as the author would like to suggest.

I think it's important to give youngsters a rest. It's not just Sterling playing 30+ games already this season, its the pressure on him as well. Some youngsters break under this pressure, some don't. Credit to Sterling for being mentally ok so far; but I would rather him not play too much this season. I think Macca has been pretty vocal in saying that he shouldn't even be on the subs bench for games and be allowed to rest completely. I totally agree with this. Being on the subs bench means that he still has to be mentally prepared to play at any point in the game.

In other news, (and highlighted):

Jack Robinson seems to have joined Wolves on loan until the end of the season.

Hopefully Robinson plays a lot for Wolves and gets some experience.
He should be ready for more first team footy next season.

What Owen and Fowler? These are two players who were a shadow of the great players they were come their 28 birthdays.

Just some things I noticed:

Suso is top class, too good for the U21s, I hope he plays against Zenit.
Texeira is fantastic on the ball and a very good passer.
What a horrible tackle from the West Brom player. I feel for Pelosi, must have been extremely painful.

Also we're currently 2nd in the Elite group table (best teams in the country), four points behind Spurs with one game in hand. Add Wisdom and Sterling to that team and we'll easily win the competition.

Thanks for the clip, Modo. Great to see Dunn get another run-out with the U-21s. Ibe continues to impress; he already seems to be a better all-around player than Sterling at the same stage of development. Coady's last-ditch tackle was fantastic Carra-esque stuff.

And that was a disgraceful challenge. I think they should double or triple the bans for challenges like that to really send home the message that they have no place in the game.

The u21s should have won by 4 or 5 there. Sickening challenge on Pelosi, who has been quietly impressing at this level.

Last season I was very excited about Suso's chances of becoming a world class player (and still am) and now we have Teixera and McLaughlin to look forward to. Ibe, Pelosi, Sinclair etc could all become legends but from the bits I've seen McLaughlin and Teixera seem to have everything going for them. It would be great if they got a sniff of first team action towards the end of the season.

Robinson started for Wolves last night and apparently did well. He's another very good full back prospect. So much young talent at the club now.

I want to say that this is one of my favorite threads ever on the site - the inputs from Macca, Peter, Studs, Modo, Livvy and many others have allowed most of us to follow the future stars (hopefully) of Liverpool. KEEP IT UP!
I wish I could see them live more often. I used to be able to do that before I started working full time.

Anyway....BIG GAME TONIGHT! I'll start a new thread.

That's harsh. He's barely even played for the first team this season. Most people who've watched him a lot think he has a good chance.

I don't either. Mclaughlin's much the better prospect from what I've seen. Brad Smith ain't too shabby either.

McLaughlin some kind of mix between Rob Jones and Vegard Heggem.

I have a feeling that he'll become Ryan's favourite player.
