Youth / Reserve Team Thread... 2010 - 2013

I'm in favour of sending players out on loan but I wouldn't do it for the sake of it necessarily. You don't want the reserves side to be *too* young and inexperienced in case they struggle.

The likes of Flannagan will end up leaving for nothing / a pittance anyway so we probably don't lose much by keeping them around (see: Darby).

Pacheco is a weird one though.

It's probably true that a lot of the older players have next to no chance of making it, but the bigger problem is them keeping much better prospects from getting game time, particularly Ibe, McLaughlin and Yesil.

What's different this season, is that the Reserves league has been revamped and the games are a lot more regular now. There was a break in December, and we took the boys to Singapore during that lull in the league action. I think I heard Mellor or his co-commentator (forgot his name) mention that Alex Inglethorpe's team will be playing almost twice a week from here on and they showed a long list of fixtures. That's great, because too often in the past, Reserves games schedules have been too irregular. Playing two games a week could also explain why some guys were/weren't starting yesterday.

The mystery here is Pacheco - he's good enough to play first team football permanently elsewhere, but yet he's still stuck playing in the Reserves here. Is he being kept on to help the Reserves players develop? For example, I noticed that Teixeira played well yesterday in the first half when linking up with him down the left, which was where our greatest threats were generated in the first 45 minutes.

Tomorrow's game against West Ham has been cancelled due to bad weather.
And it looks like Flanno's injury is really bad - he's out 12 weeks according to Rodgers. Tough luck for the kid. No news on Smith's injury though.

BBC Scotland reporter Andy Burke: "On first showing Hearts' new loan striker Michael Ngoo looks a read handful. Strong and good in the air. Shades of a former Hearts favourite, Mark De Vries."

Some Ngoo ratings from Hearts fans after his debut:

Ngoo 7 Great strike and workrate, would do better imo with another striker up front with him.

Ngoo 8 very good debut will be hunted by refs but looks like he will stand up to all that's chucked at him.

Ngoo 9 Always willing too put himself about. Lay offs inevitably found one of his teammates - take note Mr. Sutton. Fantastic

Ngoo 9 - Great debut, won everything in the air and on the ground, caused them all sorts of problems, took goal well. In fact if you were watching John Sutton that's what to do when presented with a chance on the 6 yard line.

Ngoo - hit the post, scored, scored a penalty, caused chaos, good flicks and lay-offs, he must have wondered what planet he is on loan to but seemed to thoroughly enjoy his day and the crowd, well done son - 9

Ngoo 8 bearing in mind it was a debut in a big game and a ta new club, you`d have thought he`d been here for years. Great touch, good brain and his bulk and pace will cause major problems for defences.

Ngoo 8 - looks like he could be our answer to our goal scoring problems, took his goal well, penalty was nice and unlucky with the header.

2:30 for Danny Wilson's cross nodded onto the post by Ngoo.
5.00 for Ngoo's lovely strike assisted by Wilson's head across goal.

The most left-footed player since Riise.

Thing is, he's scored 20 in 27 games this season and buried his pen with his right foot. No excuses.

Inverness are claiming that Wilson was illegal, as he had not served a one match suspension, for being sent off in his previous match n
in the competition, in 2010.

From the huddle after Yesil's goal, it looks like Dunn played with the U-21s in this game instead of traveling to Qatar with the U-18s. Is that correct?

Is that the first time he's turned up for the U-21s? I don't think I've seen him play for them before; though I don't follow them close enough so this might be a dumb question....

I think it probably is, yep. Think it was just because virtually all the other u18s are away so to give him some game time.
