Youth / Reserve Team Thread... 2010 - 2013

Interesting that after the game today Inglethorpe implied that several players might go off on loan in January and the squad would be rejigged for the rest of the season. I can see the logic in that although, with Rodgers wanting players at this level to be acculturated in his playing style, finding suitable clubs is going to be tricky. Flanno, presumably, will be given a chance somewhere, because he just needs to get experience. Maybe Coady would also benefit from testing himself in a first team. But I would have thought the likes of Adorjan and a few others would benefit more from staying and being coached in the 'Rodgers Way'.

I think it makes sense to loan a few guys out; what I don't like is when we send guys out and they go train with the senior squad but are left lingering in the stands or at home on match day. Might as well have them playing Reserves games for us in that case.

The likes of Flanagan, Adorjan, Ngoo, Morgan could all do with some tests in a few games at the senior pro level.
Robinson and Coady I'd like us to keep on with the senior squad and test in the FA Cup, since they play in areas where there are gaps in our first team right now and which don't look like getting addressed in January.

As for suitable clubs - perhaps Brighton and Hove Albion under Poyet and Watford under Zola?

Watford won't be taking any loan players. The Udinese/Watford owner's using them as a dumping ground for Udinese players.

Liverpool will travel to Singapore today to contest the inaugural NexLions Cup having named their strongest possible U19 squad.

The tournament, which kicks off on December 14, will see the Reds face a Singapore XI before taking on either Manchester United or Sporting Lisbon in the tournament final or third-place play-off on December 16.

So just a quick update after the first day of games:

Sporting Lisbon is really, really good. Bossed the Mancs in the second half and spanked them 4-1 in the end after having the upper hand in the first half but trailing 0-1 going into the break. Shouldn't be a surprise for those who saw them dismantle us 8-1 on aggregate in the NexGen last season. Totally out-passed and out-ran the Mancs. We play them on Sunday after edging Singapore 1-0 in the second game. It's going to be really difficult because this team is just so slick and enjoyable to watch. The fans loved them.

Liverpool fielded a team with guys draw from the U-18s and Reserves* and were given a tough test by the Singapore youth side which is a pretty experienced team. Obviously, the Liverpool side had a few disadvantages having flown in only on Wednesday and having to adjust to the temperature and humidity here in Singapore. The LFC back four struggled all night to cope with the pace of the Singapore team; but for some poor composure in front of goal and a lack of quality in the passes/crosses in the final third, Singapore might've had this game sewn up in the first half. LFC were poor in the first 45 minutes and only really settled down in the second, when the game could've gone either way with the chances available.

Morgan played out on the right and found space but didn't always get the ball. When he did, he put in a decent shift. It was off his pass/shot that Yesil scored, improvising and scoring with a backheel. Yesil was quiet the rest of the game though, being more involved in running arguments / quarrels with the Singapore centrebacks than with our play. Ibe started, showed great pace but didn't really threaten a lot; Petersson came in for him in the second half and was much more of a threat. McLaughlin was disappointing as was Smith; both "senior" fullbacks got beaten time and again for pace, and didn't put in much of an attacking performance as well. McLaughlin will be given a stern test on Sunday against Sporting Lisbon, as they have a very good left back and a very tricky left winger (who, for all his pace and trickery, didn't really show a good end product, I have to add).

MOTM for LFC was easily Jack Dunn. Classy performance, showed great composure when the team was under pressure in the first half, and showed good control, strength and vision throughout the game. I really like Dunn and been impressed by him each time I've seen him; I hope the kid has a great future with us.

Overall, good result but not a good performance, but given the conditions we were playing under (travel, humidity, temperature), it was understandable. The most important thing was to give the guys a good run-out after all the miles clocked coming here, and they got one. Looking forward to the game on Sunday.

* Team that played:
LFC U18s: Fulton (16), McLaughlin (18), Smith (18), Jones (17), Heaton (16), Lussey (18), Morgan (18), Dunn (18), Yesil (18), Pelosi (18), Ibe (17).
Subs: Mersin (18), Maguire (16), Baio (18), Sinclair (16), Petersson (18).,

I saw it live on TV. The whole team was ineffective. The passing game cannot be seen in our team. Lucky to win.

Just to add, I thought Jack Barmy (son of Nick) looked good for the Mancs. Set up the first goal and won a penalty in the second half, which he took himself but was well saved by the Lisbon keeper.

The finish by Yesil was pretty darn special, if not for the ball bouncing scrappily while he dragged it back ruining the aesthetic somewhat it was Bergkamp-esque... lovely stuff...

We were pretty poor though and you'd expect Lisbon to give us a pasting on that evidence.

Yup, Sporting Lisbon will run riot against us if we don't tighten up defensively. Singapore had so many chances but was only let down by poor finishes.

The offal has a 3-part series about the team that we've sent to the NexLions tournament. Each player would provide answers to a series of questions. One of the questions was: "Person you'd most like to meet". As expected, everyone put in either the name of some great footballer or celebrity. All except Yalany Baio, that is. This was his answer and I felt rather sad after reading it.

Yalany Baio
Date of birth: 10.10.1994
Place of birth: Guinea
Person you'd most like to meet: My dad - I've not seen him for 12 years

Back from the game. As expected, we lost to Sporting Lisbon. Final score was 2-0, but that didn't really reflect their superiority over our side. They could've easily scored at least a couple more but for some wayward finishing; we had a chance or two we (mainly Pelosi I think) should've done better but we had the same problems as the senior side in dithering in and around the box too often.

Was a good match for our kids, as it allowed them to see the gulf between them and the Sporting Lisbon. They were the much better side from back to front, showing better speed both in terms of raw pace and thinking, as well as quickness of turns and superior ball skills. I thought we played better than against Singapore in the first game, but that isn't saying much because we were pretty poor in that game.

I'd mentioned in the first report that our slackness at the back would cost us and sure enough, it was a misjudgement in central defence that allowed them to score within 40 seconds of the restart to take the lead. Their second came off a fast break from our corner (or was it a free kick; well one or the other) and they broke at pace and played the ball perfectly in a text book break to settle the tie late in the game.

From what I could tell, I think we played 4-3-1-2 with Dunn the most advanced CM behind the pair of Morgan (left) and Ibe (right). Ibe initially kept drifting onto the left side where I suppose he's more comfortable, and Inglethorpe had to keep yelling at him initially to move back to the right. Baio, Pelosi and Lussey played behind Dunn. Yesil and Sinclair were on the bench but neither played. Sinclair didn't get a single minute of play time in this trip, which I found weird.

Individuals
- McLaughlin had a much better game; defensively solid most of the time, but didn't really sortie much up front again.
- Morgan and Ibe both worked hard up front, but neither got much change from their defenders. Ibe was drawing double or triple cover at times when he pulled out wide, at other times, he found his raw pace insufficient.
- I've mentioned this before (and I think Macca did as well) - if there's one department where we don't seem to be good at in the youth sides, it's the goalkeeping department. Definitely a lot of work needed there.
- Dunn wasn't as good as in the first game; still fought hard but was finding it harder playing against a much better team. He was struggling at times with his passes but did okay.
- Pelosi got into good positions several times, but needed more composure or commitment to twat the ball at goal, like his seniors in the first team.
- Baio - had a good game; made timely interceptions and was committed to use his physical strength in holding out against his opponents; a bit of a Momo-like performance, complete with loose passes. Ha!

I suppose it's up to Inglethorpe and crew to assess if we met our learning objectives on this trip. I think certainly, it'd have been a good experience for the younger kids. Also good to play against a classy side like Sporting Lisbon to see where we stand (quite far back) and recognize the areas where we need to work on improving.

Who is Hobbs?

Thanks for this mate, very interesting.

So, great 4-1 win for the lads. Standout performers for me were McLaughlin, who had a terrific game at RB; Ibe, who looks very capable of stepping up behind Sterling into the first team in the next couple of seasons and Yesil, who is starting to look the predator we were led to expect.
