Youth / Reserve Team Thread... 2010 - 2013

Jack Dunn again 4-0! Lovely team play, a clever bit of movement from Dunn and a fine finish from the edge of the area. As Peter said, Dunn's a crafty player. If he can only now stay injury free he'll progress quickly.

Edit: just saw the replay - really great stuff from Dunn. The ball was cut back to him, he slightly repositioned himself and with little backlift he hit it with power and precision into the corner of the goal.

A front 3 of Ibe, Sinclair and Sterling could be amazing in a few years.

It could indeed. The great thing is there's probably about 4 or 5 combinations of young players we could say that about, too. Certainly when you extend that to the front 4 to include the likes of Dunn, Trickett-Smith, and Teixeria, anyway.

He hasn't been lucky with injuries. Let's hope that changes.

A great win and an imperious performance. Dunn, Ibe, Peterson, McLaughlin, Sinclair, the list goes on - all splendid. I actually suspect no other performance this season, at any level, will have encouraged Rodgers more than this one. The style, intelligence and assurance on the ball, and without it, was excellent.

I thought McLaughlin was dynamite coming forward from right back.
He has a crafty knack of making his runs at the right time.

Peterson played brilliantly also, his selfless running and bringing others into play was a joy to watch.

Dunn reminds me of Jack Wilshere in his style of play and was superb in all aspects of his game.

It's really very unusual to see a youth XI packed so full of promising players. You might expect to have 3 or 4 with a realistic prospect of making it at the club, with the rest just making up the numbers, but tonight you could name 7 or 8, maybe more.

As good as Sinclair looks at times around the box I think he's still strangely sluggish inside the box where you'd expect him to be razor sharp. This evening there was one shot that the keeper spilled and Sinclair was caught on his heels, almost ball watching. He really needs to be ruthless in those situations. A really great prospect, but I'd be surprised he'd cope against West Ham at this stage, unless he's brought on late on. Ibe would do some good on either wing but that still needs the centre being solved.

Ibe and Peterson have been especially good at sliding in perfectly weighted little through balls and cut-backs around the box this season, and there were a few excellent examples last night. Tremendous alertness and coolness.

No it doesn't. If we beat Inter in our last match we are definitely through, but I think there are also certain scenarios whereby a draw would be good enough.

Thanks for that. I had assumed that only the top 2 would go through. Apparently the 4 best 3rd place teams also progress - I suppose since there are 6 groups, that'll make 16 for a knock-out. A draw against Inter would guarantee us better than group 2's 3rd place. If Tottenham beat Anderlecht that should see a draw suffice for 4th. 2 strong performances after a slow start suggest we can go a lot further.

Yes it'd be a real shame to go out because IMO there's real potential in that team. Not sure why they struggled so much at first really.
