Youth / Reserve Team Thread... 2010 - 2013

We had a great tradition of signing talent from the lower divisions; Alec Lindsay (Bury), Rob Jones (Crewe), Phil Neal (Northampton), Alan Hansen (Partick Thistle), Kevin Keegan & Ray Clemence (Scunthorpe) and many, many others.

Since the introduction of foreign players the big teams seem to have eschewed lower league talent in favour of imports BUT the talent is still there.

I've seen Bennett & Pilkington (Norwich), Williamson (Newcastle), Jagielka (Everton), Walters (Stoke), Turner (Sunderland), Naughton (Norwich), Williams, Allen, Britton (Swansea), Moses (Wigan), Jarvis (Wolves) etc, etc, etc and "knew" they could make it in the EPL and IMO many of these players are better than players currently plying their trade in top 4 teams.

LeFondre (Reading), Pearce (Portsmouth), Powell (Crewe), Green* (Charlton), Malone (Bournemouth**), Kee (Burton), Elliott (Macclesfield), M. Phillips (Blackpool) and quite a few others that I'm temporarily forgetting about could very well be the next wave of EPL newbies.

Unfortunately not as many players move up through the ranks these days because of the influx of foreigners and I always feel sorry for players like Gary Jones (Rochdale), Hume (Preston), Roberts (Huddersfield), Lester (Chesterfield) etc who IMO should/could have been given a chance at the top level and probably would have been in the 1970's-80's.

I would love to see us dip our toes in the lower league transfer market, it could prove very lucrative.

*Danny Green at Charlton is quite highly rated by Charlton fans but IMO not rated highly enough.
** Malone I think is on loan from Wolves but I think I read that they are prepared to let him join Bournemouth permanently. I think they're mistaken if they do because he could prove better than Jarvis.

Pesam should be our new DOF, and mate I'm being serious.
Cheers 737Max.

I reckon I'd do a decent job as a scout but would get very frustrated if the team I was scout for didn't act on my suggestions.

I used to know the Newcastle scout for the North West (about 7 or 8 years ago) and all the players he told me could "make it" are still plying their trade in the lower leagues whereas I told him he should be looking at LeFondre (when he was about 18) & Liam Lawrence (who was playing for Mansfield at the time but that was also his territory).

We both agreed that Grant Holt could play at a higher level but NOT the EPL (I don't always get it right).

Interesting reads Pesam as always mate.

You sure do rate that Powell lad, will be interesting to follow his developments.

Many of the players you mention are average PL players.
Shouldnt we be looking for better?

I'm about 5% certain I saw Powell play in the Milk Cup once. He was quite tall for his age (under 14 match) and dominated the game along with another tall Crew player.

Might have to dig out some old programs because I may be mixing him up with some other Crew Wonderkid

Liverpool will take on trial another 4 youngsters from Nacional - namely, L. Otormín (15), R. Amaral (15), D. Baldi (15) & G. Pereiro (16). The youngsters from Uruguay will be given 10 training sessions at Anfield. This is part of the Sebastian Coates' deal.

The deal was made possible by one of the clauses in Coates' transfer to Liverpool, which stipulated that the Reds would have first option on Nacional's young talents. A short statement on the Uruguayan club's website said goodbye to the teenage quartet, and wished them the best of luck across the Atlantic Ocean.

"This is what playing football is all about. Enjoy yourselves and be proud that Nacional have chosen you for this opportunity," youth coordinator Roberto Roo told the players, while sporting director Daniel Enriquez affirmed that it was a great opportunity for the young prospects.

"This is very important for us because this step has been taken thanks to the Nacional name and what the club have achieved in the last few years.

"It is fundamental for the kids to travel, to discover the world and take on this life experience. It will be unforgettable for them, and we want them to make the most of this experience."

The youngsters will take part in 10 training sessions at Liverpool, before a scheduled return to Uruguay on April 29.

So are they just gonna train for ten days or will we sign them if they're any good? It's good to see this kind of thing in action!

Video: 17-year-old Liverpool trialist scores incredible three minute hat-trick

Teenage striker Joel Pohjanpalo spent a week on trial with Liverpool in March 2012 and judging by his recent three minute hat-trick for Finland's most successful side HJK, he could well be on his way to Anfield this summer.
In the first game of the Finland's top flight season, Joel's side were 1-0 down with 20 minutes to play before he struck three times to save the day. What a Finnish!

I know he's 17 and all but the Finnish league is one of the worst leagues in Europe. It's about the same level as the Swedish division 2.
The top division in Sweden (Allsvenskan) is somewhere between the Championship and League 1.

Kenny Dalglish has paid tribute to former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez for his Academy legacy.

Benitez was responsible for bringing Pep Segura, Rodolfo Borrell and Frank McParland to Kirkby three years ago.

The trio have overseen a significant increase in the number of youth internationals being schooled by Liverpool, while players like Jon Flanagan, Raheem Sterling and Jack Robinson have been given first-team chances.
Our U19s reached the semi-finals of the NextGen Series this season and Dalglish is delighted with the work being done by Benitez's appointments.

"I think it's been fantastic and it's a great credit to the changes that Rafa made three years ago, bringing in Pep, Rodolfo and Frankie," the gaffer told LFC TV after helping to welcome 22 new under-8 players to the Academy on Thursday.

"The way it has moved forward is a credit to anyone who has helped in any way, shape or form.

"It was Rafa who brought these people in and we should always be grateful to him for doing that.

"In years to come, if we get some players through it, I'm sure he'll be just as proud as any of the players are. And he should be proud about what he's set up here."

Liverpool's new D.O.F. praising Liverpool's new manager

CREWE could earn up to £1m from the deal which saw outstanding schoolboy Dan Smith jump ship to join Liverpool.

While lamenting his failure to persuade the outstanding 16-year-old, below, to stay on and sign scholarship forms at the Alex this summer, Steve Davis believes the move could prove good value for a player who was still some way off pulling on a first-team jersey.

While the initial compensation fee is around the £300,000 mark, add-ons have been drafted to ensure the Railwaymen are not left feeling bereft should the Stoke-based teenager make a career for himself at Anfield.

"We did try to steer Dan in the right direction and advise him on what was best for him to do," revealed the Crewe boss.

"But it was Dan's choice to go to Liverpool. We've got a decent amount of money out of it and with add-ons that would take it over £1m. That's not bad for a player who has not played for our first team."

Smith had been making waves in Crewe's junior sides for a couple of seasons and, like Nick Powell and Max Clayton, had been earmarked for a smooth and swift transition to the first-team squad.

But Manchester City's scouts proved to be the most persistent of the talent-spotters circling Academy games where Smith's talent shone through, no more so than when he scored a solo effort against Chelsea last December.

But the Eastlands outfit had a powerful challenger for Smith's signature in Kenny Daglish's Liverpool.

And the Madeley High School pupil was soon to be photographed with the Reds legend after his proposed move to City fell through.

"If he wants to go a bigger club then Dan will have a better chance at Liverpool than at Manchester City I feel," admitted Davis.

"But he is going to have to wait a long time to play at a high level.

"He's going to be playing youth team football. Then he'll go into the development squad and play reserve football.

"If he'd stayed here then he might have got some appearances in the first team next season. He will have to wait three or four years at Liverpool for that."

And Davis says there are more talented teenagers working their way through the system.

"Our conveyer belt is still working. And we've got some decent lads coming through in Dan's year although they're not quite of his calibre," he said.

"I feel with young players that they find their level through their careers whether they come from non-league or through Academies. Some of these boys do fizzle out at Premier League clubs.

"But we'll monitor Dan's progress. He's a good lad and we do wish him well."

Crewe's talent pool has been plundered before, not least when midfielders Matt Lund and Ben Marshall departed for Stoke City's Academy then under the stewardship of former Alex boss Steve Holland in 2008.

The Alex were awarded a tribunal-set £100,000, more than twice what the Potters were willing to pay for the former Alex scholars.

Lund has since struggled to make an impact at the Britannia Stadium and recently featured on loan for Bristol Rovers against his former club.

But Marshall secured a £750,000 move to Leicester City during the January transfer window – of which Crewe took a £150,000 sell-on slice – after impressing in loan stints at Carlisle and Sheffield Wednesday among others.

Eddie Johnson left for Manchester United's Academy as a promising 14-year-old striker in 1999.

United compensated Crewe for Cheshire-born Johnson and another youngster Lee Sims they had persuaded to leave the junior ranks.

Johnson played in an FA Youth Cup winning side at Old Trafford, but left on loan for Coventry, and then back to Crewe, after failing to make ripples on the first-team scene.

He later joined Bradford City and hometown club Chester and now, aged 27, is playing for US Major League Soccer side Portland Timbers after a two-year spell with Austin Aztex.

Liverpool v Newcastle reserves (final game)

Gulacsi, Mendy, Robinson, Coady, Sama, Wisdom, Suso, Roberts, Eccleston, Adorjan, Sterling

Subs: Roddan, Ward, Ngoo, Smith, Morgan

Coady has played that position before, not seen Wisdom in midfield. It's our final game so I guess we're trying something out.

Sama has obviously been told to practice hoofing it out from defence just in case he gets a chance with the first team
