Youth / Reserve Team Thread... 2010 - 2013

I do wonder why Sterling got a chance to play for the senior team while Suso, who is a year older and obviously better was left in the reserves.
We better hold on to this gem cause I have a feeling some top teams in Spain have had a look at this kid.

Says you...........
"Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling has been voted as the Reserve team player of year for 2011-12. The 17-year-old winger, who has gone on to make a handful of appearances for the first team, finished ahead of Suso and Conor Coady in the voting."

Indeed. Sterling isn't bad but IMO Suso is a more complete footballer. Have a look at that video.

I could definitely see Suso coming in to the squad much more this season. The likes of Martinez and Rodgers would be drooling at the idea of a talent like that coming through in their own youth set ups.

We've been insisting on trying to get him to play on his right more, but it just inhibits him. The guy is as left-footed as it is possible to be, the right is just for standing on.

I hope whoever gets the job has a really good look at him preseason and gets him on an extended contract.

I think people will see more young players used this year, and will immediately decide that it's because of a change in management rather than the fact that said players are a year on in their development.

exactly.

It's not exactly a mystery. Sterling has the kind of incredible pace and directness that makes him ideal to make an impact late in a game, not to mention being the only player of his type in the whole squad. I think Suso has a decent chance of making it with us, but definitely less so than Sterling.

Does Sterling really have 'incredible' pace? I'm bemused on here when players who are perfectly mobile are described as lacking all pace, and it's the same when someone like Sterling is described as having 'incredible' pace. He's quite quick, full stop. I've watched him since he signed and he's not THAT quick.

Is it not that his acceleration is great, whilst having a decent top speed?

Acceleration is always key

Whenever I've seen him he looks very quick indeed, but I could be wrong. He's certainly quick enough that it's a major asset so it's not really a big deal either way.

He's not that quick. He doesn't leave players for dead. That's my definition of players with incredible pace. I don't see why there's any need to hype these players up. In fact it makes me laugh when just about every player is branded as lacking pace, one player with decent pace is suddenly declared to be Speedy bloody Gonzalez.

this is a good point. Romario was meant to be a useless sprinter and didn't have great fitness or stamina but he used to say it was all about pace over 6 yards and both physically and mentally he was lightning over 6 yards .
Man , i loved Romario . I read once that even when he was in youth teams he was lazy as fuck .They used to drop the team in different parts of the city and get them to run back to the training ground . Romario used to just let the group run off then jump on the bus .
And Bobby Robson said once that when at PSV he used to get loads of calls from people saying they'd seen romario dancing in clubs at 2 am the night before a game . But he didn't drink or do drugs , he just loved the birds and dancing , and with dutch games at the time not starting until 5pm he used to get enough sleep. And more importantly he scored fuck loads of goals so Robson just let him get on with it .

But no one ever said Romario had 'incredible pace'. Sterling's got different abilities but he'll never be an Owen sort of player blazing into the area. There's no shame in that. I just don't see the point in suggesting he's that kind of player.

Alright, alright, I concede the point. Maybe I should've said 'amazing pace' instead, ok. Now let's just leave it at that.

I'm not sure if decent and amazing are really the same things. Clearly it's much more amazing than incredible pace, but I'm not sure I'd go so far as decent. I'd be prepared to settle on fantastic, though.

(Ignoring the laboured attempt at comedy) Thierry Henry, to me, had exceptional pace. Sterling likes to get the ball, go past a defender and either shoot or cross. I don't see where the great big pace idea comes from. Owen at his age had pace - they'd boot the ball to him and he'd run. Raheem isn't in the same class in terms of pace, but I'm not claiming that's a big issue. He's not a player who needs to use his pace that much. He's a very promising player. Isn't that enough?

I honestly don't see why it's an issue. I've watched him since we signed him and he's never seemed THAT quick. But he's a lively enough player with good technique and he's improving all the time. It seems on here that 99% of players are as slow as snails, and then, suddenly, a player is picked out as lightning fast. None of it makes much sense to me. Owen looked really fast to me. Sterling looks not quite as fast. I hope all are happy.

It's not an issue

I'm trying to find a middle ground between the viewpoints

Curse my mediating ability!
