Youth / Reserve Team Thread... 2010 - 2013

Half Time - sloppy mistakes from us but plenty of goals still in this. Sterling started fairly well but faded, Ecclestone looks good at times but needs better service, Ngoo did well to win us a goal back. Belford has been solid recently but he's had a bad half today. Robbie Fowler is watching with Mike Marsh.

FT: 4-2 in the end to Blackburn - a disappointing performance although there were a few bright moments and Borrell will be able to work on the errors. Blackburn were too powerful in midfield and we gifted them three out of the four goals through silly mistakes.

Belford: Normally pretty good but had a poor first half, dropping a cross for the first goal and letting a second go past him far too easily. 4/10

Mendy: Some neat play going forward but his positional play in defence wasn't always reliable. Was to blame for Blackburn's fourth goal by backing off the player who put the cross into the area. 6/10

Sama: A big powerful player who has impressed me a lot over the past year. He didn't have much to do out of the ordinary today but he was quietly efficient. A proper centre back who knows when to play and when to blast the ball out of play. He also went forward in the second half and hit a great shot from 40 yards out that took Blackburn by surprise and hit the bar. 7/10

Wisdom: I have huge faith in this lad. He's mature, strong and a good athlete - he's got everything, really, as potential. He's still learning but you can see he IS learning. Whether it's for us or another team I'm convinced he'll develop into a class first team player. 6/10

McGiveron: A poor error for the second Blackburn goal, and got himself out of position on a few occasions. I don't see him coping with the competition for his position. 4/10

Coady: A steady, disciplined, game, but needed to be more commanding today. With Adorjan ineffective in front of him he tended to be overwhelmed by the Blackburn midfield for much of the match. When he powers forwards through the centre and looks to play a one-two on the edge of the box he's very reminiscent of Gerrard, but obviously he has a long, long way to go. Plenty of potential though. 5/10

Roberts: Quieter than usual, but very strong and destructive when he needed to be. He's maturing slowly but encouragingly. 5/10

Adorjan: A really clever player who's matured quite a bit during the past year, but today I'm afraid he was very quiet and was deservedly subbed after an hour. He's been given a great position in which to express himself and control the forward play but he has to be more consistent than this and really seize his opportunities. 4/10

Sterling: Another so-so display, I thought. Some good movement, held the ball up quite well at times, had a couple of exciting runs from deep, cut in well from the left in the second half, and he can look very dangerous when he's on the edge of the area with the ball, but he's got to be sharper in thought as well as action. When he doesn't have the ball he needs to work harder rather than just loiter out on the wing. He also needs to work on his corners, most of which float weakly to the keeper. He did, however, turn, get himself some space and hit a great shot late on which was well saved by the keeper. More consistency, that's what he's got to show. 7/10

Eccleston: Creative and positive, he was in a good position for his goal and had a few more shots in the second half before fading and being subbed on 73 mins. 6/10

Ngoo: He looked good on the right and the left. He's tall and a bit ungainly, but he's deceptively good technically, very fast and he can look to pass the ball into the net as well as blast it. A good contender, with his pace, power and unpredictability, for a Ronnie Rosenthal-type cameo in the first team with 15 minutes to go. 6/10

Subs: Tony Silva: Lively as usual, but not as aggressive. Combined will with Sterling a couple of times. Tracked back well and helped out Mendy several times. Another contender to be a Rosenthal-style impact player. 6/10

Marc Pelosi: Very versatile young American, great attitude and did reasonably well when he came on today, making a couple of good fast interceptions. 6/10

Rudolfo's post match comments - and mood - were remarkably similar to Kenny's on Saturday. I actually think there's cause for optimism - partly because these lads are a bit dazzled by the NextGen matches and do raise their game for them (not condoning that but I guess at their age it's a lesson to be learned) and partly because the NextGen series pits them against their own age group whereas the normal ressies fixtures tend to pit them against quite a few older and more experienced players. Having said that, Spurs will be a big test, but we can score as freely as them, it could well be down to which defence is the best organised.

Spot on, btw thanks for the FT ratings.

The defence is also my biggest worry I just don't rate Sama and I've started to doubt Wisdom as well.
Maybe play Coady in defence together with Wisdom? England did win the Euro U17 with that parthership.
Flanagan has to be called upon.
Robinson is out injured, but I think that Irish kid can do a decent job there. Like I said earlier I don't rate Smith.
Suso is back from suspension and should be able to hurt them from his free role on the left.

That's not a bad idea mate. Unless Adorjan - and I'm a fan of his - looks in a better state of mind I'd be tempted to play Suso in his role.

i suppsoe a bit of scepticism is a healthy thing when assessing the youngsters, but i do think you're a bit of a pessimist Modo!

there's plenty to be cheerful about. Wisdom and Sterling are both talents right from the top drawer. of course, there'll be ups and downs with both of them, but it just seems a bit unnecessary to make comments like 'i'm starting to doubt Wisdom'. we're lucky to have him, and he's of a similar potential to someone like Kelly at a similar age imo, only much less fragile: more likely to make it than not, imo.

Has Mendy improved at all since he arrived?

He looked absolutely fucking awful in his first season.

I thought he's played surprisingly well this season but he's still a bit lightweight.

After going through the whole Partridge, Raven, Semmi, Hammill, Anderson, Peltier, Plessis, Pacheco and Nemeth ordeal I think I'm allowed some pessimism. 😉
OK I'm not saying that they're terrible defenders, when I say that I don't rate them.
I don't mean that they're not good, they're actually good enough for their level but I'm trying to look ahead and I've learnt my lesson time and time again with the regards to the players I listed.

i think that's a bit daft, really.

the only one of those you listed who was seen as of a similar potential to Sterling and Wisdom is Pacheco, and even with him there was always the nagging doubt that, while talented, he might not be very suited to the english game. nothing could be further from the truth with these two.

Wisdom shouldn't be grouped together with Sterling. I do rate him, a lot. Just check my "Sterling against the world thread".

I quite like Brad Smith. He's got really good pace and gives us plenty of energy when he goes forward. Admittedly, like what seems like a long line of left backs, he looks shakier when he's actually doing his main job of defending, but I think he's been encouraging this season.

Fair enough. IMO they're in a similar class, along with Robinson. I think they're the three who I'd expect to do well in the next 3 yrs.

We're signing a youth keeper from Wrexham today

Danny Ward

Apparently £100k + clauses.

Name: Danny Ward
Nationality: Welsh
Position: Goalkeeper

Locally born, Danny has been with the club through his youth days and is on the final year of his scholarship.

He has made numerous appearances with the Reserves and made his senior debut on loan to Tamworth at the end of the 2010/11 season - being named as their Man of the Match in a league encounter with Hayes & Yeading at the Lamb.

Internationally, he has played at schoolboy, U17s and U19s levels for Wales, featuring in the September 2011 UEFA qualifying tournament based in Slovakia.

It's amazing how many shot stoppers we've bought and sold in recent years. Hopefully this lad does well and proves to be a keeper.

Desperately hope to see someone come through from the academy, and it'll be especially nice if its someone who'd progressed through the academy. Looking at Steven Gerrard, its almost god-send we got such a gem. When will the next one come along? ???

The mancs get wildly over-praised for their youth set up but they've had to bring back Scholes and remain over-reliant on Giggs this season. It's always going to be a rare to bring through a Gerrard or a Fowler. I think we've now got more potential sell-ons in our youth set up than I can remember. That's one positive thing (there's too much of an obsession on measuring the quality of the academy on who makes it through to our first team - players making it to any other first team, for a fee, is also an achievement for the staff). It's also a positive sign that we've now got a few who, given time, might earn a chance in our first team. Wisdom, Sterling, Suso and Morgan all have a very good chance, IMHO, and adding them to Flanagan, Robinson and Spearing makes it pretty impressive considering we're looking at further progress technically under Borrell and the others. Patience is needed, but I've never been so hopeful.

"It's a great move for Danny," explained Dragons' boss Andy Morrell. "We would have liked him to stay, but the chance to sign for a top Premiership club was too good for him to turn down.

"He goes with all our best wishes and it would be great to see him playing top flight football in the not too distant future."

A Welsh Under-19 international, Ward had been with Wrexham since the age of 14 and made his Blue Square Bet Premier debut whilst on loan with Tamworth last term.

Under the terms of the transfer, Liverpool will pay an initial fee with additional payments due upon Danny breaking into the Anfield first-team.

A product of local HJK Helsinki, Pohjanpalo emerged through the youth ranks, first appearing with the reserves in 2011 at the age of 16. During his first season at the third level , he went on making 21 appearances and scoring a record-breaking 33 league goals. Due to his excellent performances with the reserves, Pohjanpalo signed a new contract with HJK on 7 December 2011, keeping him at the Finnish capital until 2015.
