The newly-reformatted U21 Premier League got underway on Friday evening, with 22 top-flight clubs now competing in one national division.

The inaugural season of the competition involved splitting the teams into three groups, which were then reshuffled at the midway point depending on sides' performances during the First Group Stage.

This year, teams will play each other once – either at home or away – with the top four sides progressing to the knockout stage to determine the overall champion.

There will also be a national cup competition involving teams from the U21 Professional Development League 2 as well those from the top flight

LFC U21: Mersin, Roddan, Maguire, Jones, Sokolik, Rossiter, Peterson, Lussey, Dunn, Trickett-Smith, Bijev

Southampton U21: Britt, Stephens, McCarthy, Turnbull, Young; Reed, Flannigan, Moore; Sinclair, Seager, Rowe

1-0
Dunn with an easy chance latching onto a poor back pass and beating the keeper with a shot into the far corner

7 min Liverpool 1-0 Southampton (Jack Dunn)
13 min Liverpool 1-1 Southampton (Omar Rowe)
20 min Liverpool 1-2 Southampton (Jake Sinclair)
27 min Liverpool 1-3 Southampton (Omar Rowe)
38 min Liverpool 2-3 Southampton (Vilyan Bijev)
42 min Liverpool 3-3 Southampton (Kristoffer Peterson)
64 min Liverpool 3-4 Southampton (Jake Sinclair)

our keeper keeps charging out to the edge of the box when balls are played through , he missed the ball to allow their lad stroll by and knock it in . Now he just charged into jones's back and battered himself . pretty poor stuff

I rarely get to see the u-21 play.
I've been watching since about 35 mins played.
You wouldn't know that Rossiter is only 16, he is very assured. I can't recall him giving the ball away.
Our number 4, Lloyd Jones, looks decent.

Southampton's wingers are very good.

LFC U21: Mersin, Roddan, Maguire, Jones, Sokolik, Rossiter, Peterson, Lussey, Dunn, Trickett-Smith, Bijev
Average age = 18.

Rossiter - 16
Peterson - 18
Lussey - 18

Bit of a rag-bag of different ages and abilities in that team! The defence in particular would've been much improved if Fulton, McLaughlin, and Smith had been available.

Two interesting games tomorrow:

U21s play Man U away, 7pm (UK)

Almeria with Suso hopefully starting play Villareal at home. Game starts at 9pm

NextGen cancelled for this season due to funding problems. Pity.

NextGen Statement - 16th August 2013

It is with regret that the NextGen Series has today announced it will be suspending the tournament for one season due to a lack of definite funding.
Over the past two seasons NextGen has played a major part in the development of European football and has enjoyed great success with many NextGen players including Celtic's Tony Watt, Villa's Gary Gardner and Ajax's Viktor Fischer progressing to their first teams.

Mark Warburton and Justin Andrews, Co-founders of the NextGen Series said:
"The level of support we have received from the football industry, media and fans has been magnificent and for that we are truly grateful. It is hugely disappointing that an event of this nature, designed to assist with the development of Europe's elite players, should have to take such action but we hope to be back next season with an even better tournament!"

Very interesting side. I presume Morgan's being played out of position again. Understandable tonight given the more experienced players there but I hope he gets back to playing as a forward asap as there's not much point in him being around otherwise. He was played out wide and deep last season to improve his overall game, but now that has to channeled back into his role as a central attacking player.

McLaughlin seems to be playing on the left?

Just watching Lloyd Jones being interviewed - he seems remarkably mature for someone of his age. And he's developing into a very, very, promising defender.
