Three-goal Reds hold off Indonesia

8th Jan 2014 - Latest News

Liverpool's U17s expressed their budding talent and proved their steel with an impressive 3-2 win over Frenz United Indonesia at the Sultan Agung Stadium on Wednesday.

The young Reds were in efficient and clinical form to follow up their victory against Frenz United Malaysia at the weekend and ensure a 100 per cent record from their Asian tour.

Des Maher's team enjoyed the upper hand throughout the opening exchanges, with Brooks Lennon and Lewis Travis providing enterprising forays forward along the Reds' right flank.

In response, Frenz United midfielder Bayu Firmansyah threatened the visiting backline with a penetrative dribble which concluded with a cross into the penalty area that eluded his teammates.

Liverpool should have secured an advantage on the quarter-hour when a goalmouth scramble afforded both Matty Rimmer and Alaster Redmayne the chance to convert from close range, although neither ultimately could.

With 25 minutes on the clock, the travellers were in front. Lennon schemed his way into the Frenz United box and drew a clear foul from Nico, then confidently stepped up to drill the spot-kick past Achmad Iqbal Bachtar and into the corner.

Confidence increased, Maher's charges maintained control of proceedings until the closing seconds of the opening period, when Andy Firth was required to palm away a powerful attempt from Firmansyah.

The hosts kicked off the second half brightly and only a last-ditch challenge prevented Ali Husein from levelling the score. But, moments later, the Reds actually extended their lead.

Redmayne capitalised on freedom on the right corner of the Frenz United area four minutes after the restart, and instantly rifled a sublime shot towards the opposite corner which nestled into the roof of the net.

By now, the away team were thriving and a third goal arrived shortly after - Lennon broke in behind the Indonesia defence and when his initial effort was parried by Bachtar, the wide-man tapped in the rebound.

As the game entered the final 10 minutes, Frenz United mounted an unlikely comeback; firstly, Abdul Ali Nahim Arury converted from 12 yards after Rimmer had fouled Risman Tahir in the box.
Yugan Poobathy then forced a second goal for the home team, sending a well-struck blast into the bottom corner despite the best efforts of the goalkeeper, but the young Reds were not to be denied and held out for a 3-2 triumph.

Afterwards, lead coach Maher told Liverpoolfc.com: "The boys have given everything they have got and I think we deserved the win overall.

"It was a great experience, playing against different sides with lots of different tactical situations to deal with.

"It's all about a team effort. We're looking for individual development all the time, but the boys have given a great team performance tonight and I'm really proud of them."

Ah but the Malaysia professional league is of under 18 standard according to a football agent friend of mine.

They were playing a senior team and won? If so, that is bloody impressive - regardless of (most) country of origin

Hopefully he'll get game time. They're bottom of the league and 5 points adrift from safety.

is the plan to test him in a difficult environment and expect him to do alot of defending ? Because i wonder how beneficial it will be to join a relegation battle , is it the best place to be ?

Shit I posted this in the January transfer thread, didn't realise Buddha had already posted it.

Rock bottom of the championship, not sure that's the loan I'd pick for him but then again it might be ideal for him, who knows. I hope he does really well.

I think the choice is probably down to factors like the number of clubs that showed interest, the suitability of the player to the football style that the club plays, and the chances of the player actually getting onto the pitch. I'm not sure how much the position of said club in the table is a factor.

I doubt he'll get much chance to play his usual attacking full-back role at Barnsley!

Not having seen Barnsley play, I have no idea. But just because they're bottom of the table doesn't mean they can't have an attacking side (or full back); Martinez's Wigan for example, if I recall correctly, was always an attack-minded team - shame that they couldn't defend though.

I have a soft spot for Barnsley and even though they're bottom, as ever, they're not far away from having a decent first 11. On their day they can play as well as most teams in the division but they rarely get a chance to pick their best 11.

They have 2 very good tenacious CM'ers in Dawson and Perkins and when they both play it allows the full backs to get forward at will. Defensively they are poor so I think they'll continue to concede with McLaughlin there but at least he should get lots of opportunity to bomb forward.

Barnsley match cancelled:

Today's match at The Valley between Charlton and the Reds has been postponed due to concerns over safety.

Despite the best efforts of Charlton Athletic's ground staff all week, referee Iain Williamson took the decision to postpone today's fixture following a 1pm pitch inspection.

Watching Pool U-18s vs Boro U-18s.

Sinclair just scored his second of the game; 2-0 to us now. Two nice pieces of finish; one a glancing header off a cross from Wilson (I think) and the other a poacher's goal, pouncing on a high bouncing ball and finish sharply into the corner.

Distracted by a game I'm playing while watching this at the same time; O'Hanlon, Wilson, Trickett-Smith and Sinclair have done well; O'Hanlon has been steady at the back with some good passes forward, while Wilson and Trickett-Smith have been very lively and played some very nice passes forward. Wilson almost scored a belter from a free kick; ball came off very hard and loudly off the top angle.

Rather disappointed in Ojo though; he's gotten into good positions but he looks a bit Moses right now; not much end product and seems rather lackadaisical when we're defending.

Chirivella came off early in the first half after a bad challenge, and Sinclair has just been subbed off. He picked up a knock just above the ankles in the first half in what was a blatant foul in the box but no peno was given.

3 - 0 now to Pool U-18s. Well-worked setpiece; bit of magic by Ryan Kent with a quick shoulder drop and feint on the run, selling his defender the wrong way, before laying it on a plate for the sub Cleary to tap home.

Our keeper Crump has made some important and solid saves in the second half. Brewitt has done well at the back as well, and Ojo has improved after the interval.

Game over. 3 - 0 it is to us.
