First-team chance is inspiration for Reds' youngsters 22 Jan 2014 07:38 U-21 boss Inglethorpe delighted to see youngsters making step up

Alex Inglethorpe admits seeing a pathway through to the first team is a source of inspiration for his high-flying Liverpool FC youngsters.

The Reds’ under-21s climbed to second place in the Premier Under-21s League table following Monday’s impressive 4-2 victory away to Arsenal. Members of Inglethorpe’s Kirkby Academy-based squad are frequently invited by manager Brendan Rodgers to train with the first team at Melwood. Brad Smith was handed his debut when the 19-year-old full-back came off the bench against Chelsea last month, while Jordan Rossiter and Cameron Brannagan have been named among the substitutes in recent weeks. They are battling to join Academy graduates Raheem Sterling, Jon Flanagan, Martin Kelly and Jordon Ibe at Melwood on a permanent basis.

Inglethorpe says Rodgers’ willingness to put his faith in youth makes Liverpool the perfect environment for blossoming talent. “It gives the boys great encouragement,” Inglethorpe told the ECHO. “This is a club any young player would want to be at. It’s one where there are always opportunities if someone is doing well. “Some clubs have enough senior players to field three teams but we don’t operate like that. “The young players here know if they are working hard and improving they will get chances.”

Results come a distant second to youth development in Inglethorpe’s list of priorities at the Academy. It’s the reason why the former Exeter City boss will be delighted if his under-21s squad is further depleted by loan moves over the coming months. Big frontman Michael Ngoo, who scored twice against Arsenal, is among those attracting interest from Football League clubs. “To be honest, I never look at the league table,” Inglethorpe said. “I base how well we’re doing as a reserve team on the fact we’ve got Jack Robinson at Blackpool, Conor Coady at Sheffield United and Ryan McLaughlin at Barnsley. “I hope some of the other older boys will also go out on loan. That may seem an unusual situation as normally you want to keep your best players but we have a transient group here. “I what to see our players attracting interest from clubs and gaining experience elsewhere. “It’s just a case of ensuring it’s the right environment for them and making sure we retain enough boys so we’re able to put a team out. “I’d be delighted to see Michael go out on loan. He deserved those goals against Arsenal and I was really pleased for him. “He has worked really hard in training to prepare himself correctly and he's benefiting from that.”

Australia-born Smith marked his return to under-21s duty following his senior outing at Stamford Bridge with a goal as the Reds defeated an Arsenal second string side including Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Carl Jenkinson and Emmanuel Frimpong. Inglethorpe said: “We had a young team out but I thought we were terrific. “We certainly didn’t show any fear and we enjoyed more than our fair share of the ball. “The players worked extremely hard. They pressed at the right times and most importantly we retained our style and tried to dominate possession. “Brad did really well and his goal topped off a very solid performance from him.”

Is it only me who thinks Ngoo MAY have a role to play? He's big, strong, a hassle for any defender and has pace ... Surely he can be an option?

Hard to tell. He does have definite attributes but I'd have expected him to come into the first team picture before now.

He's been told he can leave. A bit premature IMHO but there we go.

He gets a brace against Arsenal and then gets the heave-ho. Sheesh. He's the kind of player our defence would struggle against. I'd keep him for practice games at Melwood when we're preparing to play against massive forwards.

We do seem to have zero tolerance of any forward who doesn't conform to the norm in Rodgers' mind. I can understand that but I do wish he'd be a teensy bit more flexible with such players. Ngoo was/is an intriguing young player.

The timing is strange for me as much as anything. You also have to say that Wiz really is jinxy bollox.

I'm sure you are not alone but the reality of it is that he has no chance of making it here. And he never looked like he would.

He was always second choice to Adam Morgan but they were both average footballers even at underage level.

Ngoo got 4 goals from 15 starts on loan in Scotland last year and only 1 start on loan at Yeovil. For a striker at 21 these stats tell you all you need to know. Forget about him even having a role to play here as Rodolfo said the season before last he has alot of work to put in to even make it as a professional footballer.

Bugger.

This makes since now as Barnsley had=ve already signed a rb on loan today from Crystal Palace.
Disappointing this news though for McLaughlin and us. He has had a tough year of injuries the lad.

If Johnsons out forever, Mclaughlin may well get a chance at some point. Maybe in the last couple of games when the title is sown up

Where's this 'had've' thing come from?

It's 'if we had' etc. That's IT. 'Had have' makes no fucking sense.
Haha sorry mate it's a typo I never heard or seen the word had've I my life. It was a typo no idea how it happened but SummerOnions explanation makes sense.

@bfc_official: Ryan McLaughlin has agreed to extend his loan stay at Oakwell from Liverpool until the end of the season. #DeadlineDay #BarnsleyFC #LFC

Just got home and started watching the U-18s game between Sunderland and Liverpool. Almost 60th minute now. Still 0-0 and Wilson just put in a nice curling shot that Trickett-Smith just failed to get to, to finish off the rebound. Started with a nice backheel from Brewitt while double-teamed.

Wilson looks a really confident kid; he seems to love that angled curler too. Haven't seen enough U-18 games this season and last to really have a firm impression of most of these lads, but every time I've seen Wilson, he's impressed with his touch and belief.

Pretty uneventful 15 minutes thus far. Rain is pouring down, and Wilson just won a free kick just outside the box. A couple of U-16s are in this game for us I think. Sinclair and Canos unavailable. And Wilson just ballooned that free kick.

1 - 0. Neat buildup to the goal. Ojo crosses to the far side, and O'Hanlon cushions a nice cross which the U-16 lad Adam Phillips does well to get into the box and stoop to head into the corner.

1 - 0 it ends. Bit of controversy in the end. Seems like a Sunderland player put in a shot in the final seconds after a goalmouth scramble, and they thought the ball had crossed the line before it got cleared, but somehow it was disallowed. Camera angle was shit and there wasn't a replay, so couldn't tell what actually went on.

Anyway, terrible conditions to play a game. Quite boring affair in the 30 minutes I saw. Randall was flying into hard tackles and winning them, but it was a bit risky under the conditions. Nothing bad from the boys, but nothing really outstanding either.

Liverpool's U18s produced a highly impressive display to beat Watford 2-0 in the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday night and seal their spot in the last eight of the elite youth competition.

Both Liverpool goals - scored in either half by Daniel Trickett-Smith and Harry Wilson - were created by surging runs along the right flank by inspirational captain Connor Randall.
After a dominant first-half display, the pressure finally told with the opener on 39 minutes, when the skipper's run concluded with his low cross being converted by the excellent Trickett-Smith. Attacking trio Ryan Kent, Trickett-Smith and Wilson all went close to increasing that advantage in the second period, before the latter eventually added a second in the 77th minute. The decisive effort - the Welsh international's 10th goal of a very productive season - arrived courtesy of another incisive dribble and pull-back by Randall to ensure progress. In a further boost for Neil Critchley's side, striker Jerome Sinclair returned from an injury lay-off to feature for the final 15 minutes of the clash at Vicarage Road.
The young Reds, who reached the semi-final stage last season, now face a trip to Reading in the quarter-finals of the competition. The date for that tie has yet to be confirmed.

The Reds' XI in full: Fulton, Randall, Maguire, Williams, Jones, Rossiter, Wilson, Brannagan, Kent (Sinclair), Trickett-Smith (Chirivella), Ojo.
