Full Time: LFC 5 Spurs 0.
A strange start - five minutes of awful misplaced passes. Then a class performance that, unlike the seniors, got stronger and stronger as the game went on. They stayed on the front foot, kept up their work rate and their positive attitude and really left Spurs looking naive at times and overrun. Inglethorpe really is showing himself to be a very clever, sensitive, positive coach who actually coaches - you can see it - and improves the players. He tries them in different positions, but with good instructions rather than just a vague hope, and he makes good subs. Outstanding management this season - maybe a future assistant to Rodgers.
Ward; a quiet game but he didn't do anything wrong. Kept his concentration well, quick out to collect the ball. One good save from a long shot in the second half. His kicking needs improvement.
Flanagan, another solid performance. Yes he's limited but he's very aware (far more than, say, Warnock ever was), aggressive and quite effective. Yes, he's unfashionable but it would be unfair to ignore the fact he did better than either of their full backs, he made some very good interventions and also worked hard supporting Smith further up the field.
Wisdom, comfortable back in the middle of defence and exuding a calm authority.
Paez, quite and efficient, not that noticeable mainly because he won it, passed it and stayed disciplined.
Cissokho; played well within himself but he had a useful run out.
Rossiter,as usual, bright, positive and confident, a really great young talent holding his own against many older opponents. He's going to be a fine LFC player, and possibly a very special one. The best prospect since Gerrard as far as I'm concerned.
Brannagan, hard as nails but flexible and positive in his play, breaking up attacks and passing well to start counter attacks. He got forward well tonight (probably the most attack-minded he's been), slipping into awkward areas between midfield and the attack, and scored a cool and precise goal. Often his more defensive work tends to go largely under-appreciated but he's a very good player who shows signs of blossoming now into a well-rounded midfielder. Subbed after 70 minutes after really doing a shift.
Roddan; another tough but technically capable player, working hard and linking up well.
McLaughlin, played out of position to stretch him (last time it was right wing, this time left wing), once again he came through with flying colours. Nicol-like in his versatility. A good goal, a couple of really aggressive and direct runs into the area and generally a performance marked by pace, power and maturity. He's just too good now to hold back from the first team squad. Subbed after 80 minutes.
Smith: a remarkably bright performance after coming back from a long injury lay off, he looks really fit, ran powerfully in from the wings and scored an absolute belter of a goal. Subbed after 67 minutes.
Morgan, after a long season of experimentation last year, when he was played out wide and deep to develop his team play and awareness, he's come back improved with the same great attitude. He's a genuinely coached player, he shows what quality hands-on coaching does.
Sub: YESIL: on for Smith. Understandably a but rusty and a little short of his normal pace but he showed flashes of his superlative striking potential. Hit the post after a good run and a strong piece of play to get past a defender.
Teixeira: on for Brannagan. Scored pretty much with his first touch on the counter attack. Lovely calm and cool dink over the keeper. Also a fine show of quick feet and close control as he wriggled past three players and almost set up a shot for Morgan late on.
Petersen: on for McLaughlin for the last ten minutes. I like him, he's had some good matches for us, but various niggles and a dip in form has hindered him recently. Not much chance to impress tonight, but he did manage a Steve McMahon-style chase, tackle and pass that showed great pace and commitment.
