Very much still in.

We knew it would be difficult this summer when the funds to cover replacements for players werent forthcoming. We all knew we needed a top class attacking talent be it wide left or up front, and its my understanding that Rafa was led to believe that he would be given all the money from sales only to find out later that he was to use that money to cover players contracts and not just purchases. If rafa had known that i doubt he would have bought a 17m Right back. If he had known he wouldnt see the keane money again i doubt he would have let him go either.
Im not absolving him of blame, and he at least must take part of the responsibility for Alonso's departure albeit i agreed totally with Rafa's call at the time. And also with the Aquilani deal, we were told six weeks untill he could play, that was in the last week of August nearly 10 weeks ago, was Rafa under the belief that it would indeed be 6 weeks? If so then fair enough it was probably a decent call, however he should have played Gerrard deeper and let Yossi support Torres rather than persist with what now looks like one of our worse central midfields ever.

This is all by the by, fact is he was told we would have the Keane money (8m) plus our 20m Kitty plus player sales (30m) and that wasnt the case. He was given (to spend on squad strengthening) between 20 and 30m depending on how much you think we have paid for Johnson so even at worst case we are a 15m player short of what we should have, that of course would have helped.

So would Aquilani's injury not running into its third month.
So would gerrard not getting injured
So would torres not getting injured
So would Babel not turning out to be shit.
So would Riera not being injured
So would Agger not being injured
So would Carragher not coming apart at the seams.
So would Johnson not being injured
So would Aurelio not being injured....
These arent bit part squad players, this is the basis of our side out injured week in week out and Rafa constantly having to put out a scratch side, a fact the press are totally ignoring (as are a few posters it seems).
Or should i talk about Referees not seeing clear handballs in the box?
Or maybe beachballs and understanding of the rules?

We are having a shit time with a shit run of luck and yes of course form is stuttering, but what would Mourinho do? Wave a wand and our SIX first team regulars are all fully fit and raring to go?

Im aware that i have laid into Rafa in the past mostly for his baffling decisions, but im with him here and now because theres little else he can do.

The leagues gone for sure but i dont see how spending next years transfer kitty starting another 5 year plan will help that.

For the first time in a while theres a bit of excitement about some of the kids we have coming through Eccleston, Pacheco, N'gog, Nemeth, Kelly, Insua, Dalle Vale etc.
We still have 2 of the best players in the world, we still have Agger, Mascherano, Aquilani, Reina, Johnson, Kuyt etc we just need fitness and luck.

That's one of your best posts ever. Unfortunately it's got lost in the sea of bullshit that is the rest of this thread.

When are the SCM awards again!!!

Oncy's post seems to be based on the unfounded assumption that Rafa doesn't have the faintest idea how his transfer budget is generated.

He clearly has some idea, hence pulling two players to prioritize the CL to fund January transfers. Again though, something was amiss this summer.

It also assumes that Rafa has no idea that recovery times from injury are highly variable.

There's enough legitimate reasons that Oncy has pointed to that excuse some of our bad form, without having to give Rafa the most charitable reading of the summer events, or bringing Aquilani into it as evidence of bad luck.
I dont think that Rafa doesnt know that, although i wonder if some posters do.
I simply wonder if you had told Rafa that Aquilani would miss nearly 3 months would he have perhaps changed his target.
I dont know if he would or wouldnt but one can assume he wasnt working under that assumption and as such it adds weight to the 'bad luck' defence.

I do believe Gerrard and Torres are the bigger issue however. They are 2 of the best players in world football. Its not just 2 players its 2 of the absolute top tier world class players.

Let's say Oncy's version of events is absolutely correct, that Rafa was told, you are going to get all of the money generated from sales + 20M, he then purchases Glen Johnson, and then is told, sorry, you've got no more money.

Why doesn't Rafa then not exert pressure in public, simultaneously attempting to get more cash as well as distancing himself from any shortcomings that may come from his ignorance of the situation? Has he ever been shy about that sort of thing? Why would he be after being given more authority and a new contract.

We have been very unlucky with injuries, no question. However, some people think it has exposed as many shortcomings as it has excused.

I reckon he's the one the press reported had a clause in his contract about whinging to the press about owners etc. Makes sense.

I don't think luck comes into it. We're reaping what we sowed.

You're spot on Andy. We've missed them terribly all season. I can't wait until we have them back in the team firing on all cylinders. Then we'll see us go.

If that is so, and the gagging clause stopped him complaining about an utterly fucked up situation, it clears up some things for me. New shit has come to light, and shit man...

I'm not sure that was ever the case, I certainly don't think there's any evidence to back it up.

I'm assuming the rug was pulled out from underneath Rafa when he panic bought the Greek because of Agger's injury ?
If we'd kept Keane we wouldn't have this problem. Whatever you think of him, he's an improvement on our current crop of back ups for Torres.
If we played him week in week out he would be and backed him or better yet spent the money on someone else. Say Darren Bent even, he'd be an improvement on our squad.

Or we didn't sell Crouch.

He would get the best out of every player in the squad and make the shit look average, the average look good, and the good look great.

That's what he'd do.

I've been told he does and more so gets told exactly how much he has to spend on both players and contracts.

This summer he chose to tie up some players with big deals instead of buying. Fair enough but it was a gamble that has backfired now.

He makes everyone better? Is that actually your analysis?

Shaun Wright Phillips fucking loved it there didn't he. He was so vastly improved that he's back where he started, being productive again.

Kezman, Ferreira, Shevchenko, Boulahrouz

He's had just as mixed a transfer record as Benitez, and when he didn't get the right personnel, he didn't magically make them better, he had a shitload of money to redeem it though.
