Yossi Benayoun

If Benayoun returns to Anfield then it might pave the way for Raul Meireles to leave Liverpool. It’s understood the Portuguese international, currently out injured, wants to quit Merseyside because he believes his first-team opportunities will be limited by Kenny Dalglish’s summer signings.

Chelsea have expressed an interest in acquiring Meireles and it’s understood the two clubs are discussing the possibility of Benayoun being included in a player-plus-cash exchange.

However Liverpool would prefer Meireles, if he is to leave, to move abroad and not remain in the Premier League. With the midfield signings made by Dalglish, Meireles has lost his place in the starting XI for now. He was injured in the Carling Cup last week.

Meireles is thought to be available for around £11m – although Liverpool may demand more from Chelsea – and is admired by Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas who worked with him briefly at Porto.

Benayoun has indicated on his Twitter site for the past couple of weeks that he is likely to leave Chelsea, who he signed for last summer, and recently gave up his number 10 shirt to new arrival Juan Mata.

No:

1) We get weaker in a Yossi for Meirless swap -
2) Yossi is injury prone. Signing him with the intention of him taking Meirless is risky, and not worth it.
3) He's not going to hold up playing in England as he's proven the past two seasons.

I guess it could be that Ming doesn't want to stay, there mightn't be much we can do about it. Although obviously Benny for him would be a step backwards.

Don't worry jules, I'm sure it was an accident

i dont want Yossi. He spurned us for chelsea now can't get a game. if he want's to go anywhere he should look further down
[/quote]

I would agree, but he was told to find a new club by Rafa. We all should have realised it was a mistake in selling him when a team as good as Chelsea were keen to snap him up.

That said, I'm not too keen on him coming back now. He's had a few injuries and we've already got Maxi fulfilling the experienced, adaptable, squaddie, winger role. I'm not convinced we need another.

If we felt we needed to strengthen the wide areas, I would rather we go for a young prospect with lightning pace and a decent right foot.

Oh and Ming will be going nowhere. I'm sure of it.

Kenny is far too smart for that kind of bullshit.

Yossi would have put up more of a fight than practically anybody in your team yesterday.

That said, if he's the kind of player you're looking at, I can't help wondering if the rumours about Kroenke having lowered the boom on spending are correct.

If he's fit and firing, he'd be a useful player for you lot mate.

At this stage in the transfer window, it's highly unlikely Arsenal will sign a star name in midfield.

I know it's not saying much, but you'd rather Benayoun in the team over Arshavin and Rosicky the way they're playing at the minute.

I'd be freaked if I was an Arsenal fan.
They need defenders badly and they go in for some Asian striker and Yossi.
All this is great for us though, less competition for the Top 4.

Ben Smith from the times (I think) is saying Modric deal is off, CFC now after Ming with Yossi as part of the deal

so we make ourselves weaker and chelsea stronger in one fell swoop?
we have no idea if gerrard is past his injuries, we'd be mad to sell.

I sense bullshit. No way would Kenny let Raul go at this stage of the transfer window.

if gerrard then it makes as ming isn't going to be a starter so selling ming would make sense, but if we sell and gerrard breaks down from his injury again (not exactly far fetched, is it?) then we are relying on adam to remain injury free for the entire season

Chelsea show renewed interest in Liverpool's up-for-sale Raul Meireles

By Jason Burt and Rory Smith
10:00PM BST 29 Aug 2011

Meireles can leave Liverpool, and has been available for sale at £11 million, but it is understood that Liverpool would rather he went overseas than join another Premier League club, particularly Chelsea.

Indeed it is thought that Chelsea’s renewed interest in Meireles — who is greatly admired by manager André Villas-Boas — has already led to an increase in the fee being demanded by Liverpool. However, Chelsea are desperate to conclude the deal and will make a new cash bid.

Sources have indicated Liverpool do not want to re-sign Benayoun, who would like to return to the club he left last summer for £5 million. The Israeli is almost certain to leave Chelsea and it remains more likely he will join French champions Lille. There has been tentative contact from Arsenal — who have also inquired about Benayoun’s Chelsea team-mate Alex — but no bid has been made.

Chelsea’s interest in Meireles does not, yet, mean that they have given up all hope of signing Luka Modric from Tottenham Hotspur and they are weighing up making an improved offer of £40 million. However, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has told Chelsea, once again, that Modric is not for sale ay any price.

Chelsea and their negotiators have tried to persuade club owner Roman Abramovich to give up on pursuing Modric but the Russian billionaire is still hoping he can conclude a deal given the fact the 25-year-old midfielder remains adamant he wants to leave.

Modric played for Spurs in Sunday’s 5-1 home defeat but manager Harry Redknapp later revealed that the Croatian had come to him before the game and asked not to be included.

There is understood to be a degree of friction at Spurs over Levy’s unwillingness to negotiate. Redknapp has already suggested that it might be in the club’s best interests if Modric is sold — a view that has been backed by some players.

However, Redknapp has made it clear he does not believe Spurs should sell on transfer deadline day and matters have become further complicated because Modric is now on international duty with Croatia set to play two vital Euro 2012 qualifiers.

Modric is believed to be distraught that his hoped-for move to Chelsea does not appear set to come to fruition and Spurs will have the difficult task of rehabilitating the player back into their squad.

He may be offered a new, improved contract at Spurs but that might also cause difficulties with some other players at the club who could ask for better terms for their deals.

Meireles is unsure of his future at Liverpool and whether he fits into the plans of manager Kenny Dalglish, who has bought several midfielders this summer. There has been interest in him from Serie A Liverpool would rather he did not stay in England.

Villas-Boas only worked briefly with Meireles at Porto but there is a mutual admiration and the Chelsea manager would welcome him at his club especially if he failed to land Modric. It is believed that Villas-Boas has decided against bidding for another midfielder, Porto’s Joao Moutinho who he had considered as an alternative to Modric.

Moutinho has a €40 million (£35.3 million) buy-out clause in his contract, which Chelsea will not match, and given the anger from Porto over Villas-Boas’s attempts to sign Alvaro Pereira from his former club it seems unlikely that the two sides would reach a compromise.

Chelsea have not given up hope of signing Pereira but will not meet the €30 million ((£26.5 million) buy-out clause in his contract. The Uruguayan international is believed to be furious with Porto as his understanding is the club, despite the release clause, would accept a lower offer of €20 million ( (£17.6 million) which Chelsea are prepared to pay. He is still trying to force through the move before the deadline closes.
