This seems to happen only to the rich and (formerly) well-connected. Meanwhile Prigozhin is back in his Wagner group HQ in St. Petersburg and is apparently relatively safe as long as he has thousands of well-armed supporters to call upon and a high public profile.
Russia is starting to resemble a stereotypical African dictatorship with warlords and generals competing for the right to ruthlessly extract their country’s resources for their personal gain, which not coincidentally is where Wagner group is in their element. There is not even a pretense of a legal framework anymore.

Is the Wagner Group still in charge on the Russian side and, if not, do you think that will make a difference?
It’s very confusing - some reports it’s being dismantled, others say things are continuing as usual. Everyone agrees that African operations will continue for sure because it’s such a cash cow for the Russian state and its mafia elites. It’s only now coming into focus how huge Prigozhin’s influence really is - for one thing one of his companies is 100% in charge of all food provisions for the Russian army - you can’t mess with that or easily replace this kind of operation. He was also in charge of the Internet troll farms and helping Trump win the 2016 election (which he happily admitted), has his own media companies etc etc. There are very few people in Russia with comparable influence and power.
And he definitely knows how political killings work in Russia having been involved in a few of them and in charge of preventing attempts on Putin’s life as his personal chef; this is not someone who will fall out of a window or stupidly drink radioactive tea. It’s actually Putin who becomes much more vulnerable without Prigozhin’s help - like many dictators he surrounds himself with incompetent and thoroughly mediocre yes men; this is one of the main reasons why the war is going so badly. Prigozhin is someone they would call upon when parades and Potemkin villages wouldn’t cut it and they actually needed to get something done.

They would be annihilated in 2 hours if they dared to invade the NATO territory, but that’s not the point - Putin needs to keep raising the stakes, he NEEDS a direct confrontation with the West one way or another. I wouldn’t exclude this possibility.
