WWIII Return of the Ruskie

Putin putting in a bid for 2028 Euro's seems a bit strange. Is this a sign that Putin is looking for an exit strategy. If it's not fake news then it's clear evidence that Putin has lost the plot. Does he really think Russia will be involved in any way, in any European sport. There not going to get so much as a seat at the next Euro tiddlywink championship.

The only way Russia will be allowed back into world sport of any kind is for them to arrest Putin and pay billions to rebuild Ukraine. As it happens I think there will be a power shift in Russia in the near future. The Putin gamble was for the Ukraine army to lay down their arms, once that gamble backfired on him, the writing was on the wall.

For sure Putin has enemy's in Russia and with the War in a mess his powerbase has been undermined. His days are numbered.

Here's hoping that Putin is replaced soon but there is also the potential that Putin's successor is even worse and more militarily aggressive.

One of the issues connected to Sergie Shoigu was the failure of the Russia Federal Security Service (reformed KGB)in relation to infiltration and spreading pro Russia propaganda in Ukraine. Hundreds of agents in all area's of Ukraine from and before the 2014 annexation of the Crimea. They failed in their mission and reports were faked to make it look like they had had some success in Ukraine.

Putin was relying to a large degree on this information. Fingers were pointed at Shoigu for losing control. Also reports that Shoigu had , once he realised the War was in a mess, was trying to make contact with murky figures in Ukraine and Russia. Hence the "heart trouble".

Couldn't he just have sent an email to Hunter Biden? :cigar:

Shoigu is military - FSB is not under his control in any way. The military has its own intelligence agency called GRU - they and the FSB despise each other and often intrude on each other’s operations.

Putin himself is very much an FSB/KGB man; he has always viewed the military with suspicion and made sure it remains low in the power hierarchy.

Wonder if Putin turning on someone so senior in this way might persuade other Kremlin bigwigs that they need to remove the bastard before he targets them.

The more I read about it, the more it looks like the "palace coup" will only happen once Russia loses the war and it's economy is in shambles and there are riots on the streets of Moscow. Not anytime sooner – if anything, Putin's grip on power will tighten in the short term.

Just yesterday the Russian Army TV triumphantly showed their large landing ship unloading tanks and equipment for a final push on besieged Mariupol.

Today, the Orsk is an ex-ship, it is no more:

I'm reckon it's more a case of the Ukranians not losing. They don't actually have to force the non Ukranians to surrender.

I've vacationed on this beach in Berdyansk a few times as a kid – my grandfather would drive us there, this was one of our family go-to spots. I remember the water is very shallow – you have to walk and walk and walk to get to the point where your feet can't touch the bottom. Nice beachside town. Fucking surreal.

Let's be honest, UEFA/FIFA will hold their tournaments wherever as long as the brown envelopes are thick enough

NATO lads and ladies meeting.

Boris looks creepy AF
All seem to be jumping at Erdogan, might be playing an important role here
and Macron and Trudeau smarmy

Not sure what the point of the comparison is here? also seems inaccurate unless a missile has a specific meaning here

Yeah, Syria was probably mostly destroyed with “dumb” bombs, which is not in any way less horrific.

Not a hard question to answer really. This isn't the Russian people's war. This is one man's, one dictator's war and he's surrounded by people who will tell him only what he wants to hear, most likely because they wouldn't dare do anything else. Thinking never really came into it.

Putin could increase the bombing and start destroying Kiev. But he must know by now bombing won't defeat Ukraine. He gamble was that Ukraine wouldn't fight or would just put up a token resistance. Mariupol has been almost raised to the ground and Ukrainians still resist and fight.

This is the time for the West to pile on the pressure. NATO should be talking up a plan to send troops in and to establish a no fly zone. Proposals for Ukraine to become in effect a buffer zone with a UN peace keeping force in place. I think Putin is resigned to an eventual cease fire, giving both sides time and breathing space to come up with a compromise.

Something along those lines will eventually happen as there really is no point in the war dragging on and on. Once the mist of War clears I wouldn't be surprised to see a power shift in the Kremlin and the new regime opening up and adopting a much more conciliatory tone. Russia needs the West to survive economically. Eventually Russians will have to admit it is what it is and stop the colonial warmongering. Putin and his kind are a throwback to the dark days of Hitler. Sooner or later an announcement will be made that Putin has been put under house arrest or he will just be vanished untill everybody realises his days are over.

NATO is right to reinforce its Eastern frontier but I strongly disagree about going beyond that by sending troops into Ukraine and establishing a no-fly zone. Either one, let alone both, would shore up Putin's rubbish excuses about NATO being the real threat, sideline any possibility of effective opposition to him within Russia and (because if a serious conflict did break out NATO would rapidly decimate the Russian forces) push him closer to pressing the nuclear button. The "cure" would turn out worse than the disease.

But I'm saying NATO should up the ante and make it clear that if the genocide continues NATO will go about a serious troop build up and also let Russia know they are serious. Only economic pressure has been put on Putin. In a sense NATO are stepping back watching Ukraine do all the heavy lifting. Yes supplying "lethal aid" but NATO has to put more pressure on Putin to come to the table and be ready to compromise.

The sanctions as they are won't make Putin back down or compromise. Been said Russia using chemical weapons are NATO's red line but is it. They should go further, Russia have already broken the GC numerous times. The nuclear threat from Russia has to be called out at some stage. Backing down will give Putin more incentive to carry on and even up the bombing to trash Kiev. There are signs that Putin wants an exit. He needs to be know the West will stand up to him and his threats. It will come to showdown eventually, so lets beef up so he knows the West does not back down to threats.
