TalkSport suggest that Benitez is looking at his old club Liverpool to snap up Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva.

It was Benitez who first brought Lucas to Anfield from Gremio in 2007, but Napoli face an obstacle because he only recently signed a contract extension.

Is Lucas a player we should sell if a good offer comes in? If so, what fee would you look for if Rafa came a calling?

9m.
Or more if possible.
I don't like the idea of losing so many players in one summer though.
You'd hope 80% of the first team is settled in from the previous season. We're losing Carra, probably Skrtel, maybe Reina, maybe Downing, maybe Enrique.
Even if we bring in a great dm, he'd be a great squad player to have.

Great ? One swallow and all that. We need a better more creative player in that postion. Even Masher was far more that than our Brazilian.

The only problem is we haven't got Aquilani anymore.

We'd have gotten all our money back.

*sigh*

Don't know about that.
You don't see too many 'creative' midfielders playing the defensive holding role.
I can only think of Alonso, and even he was better playing alongside Didi or Mascher rather than him on his own playing the defensive role.
Lucas is a great squad player to have. We can't afford a couple of Alonso's to be sitting on the bench.

I think we need a more dynamic presence in midfield, so like I said, if someone offers 25m or above I will sell.

But surely nobody would pay us 25m? And what then? We're stuck with Lucas' dynamic presence.

How dare you talk of the chosen on this way..

Reads again after coming to his senses...

Sell....

Dalglish, Benitez, Hodgson, Rodgers.............I couldn't trust any of our recent managers to stop picking Lucas as a regular starter so personally I'd sell him for £5m just to get rid of him so that he can't be picked. Rationally speaking though, he's a decent enough DM for a mid-table team in any of the top European leagues and probably worth about £8m.

Not unless a big offer, we aren't exactly stock full of good midfielders and despite some of his deficiencies, he's good enough to play for a top 4 side I believe so rather we hold onto him even if we do get someone better in. I really don't see this forum's compulsive need for us to sell some of our better peformers, it's not like we are even a top 4 side at the moment so rather build on what we have for now.

Selling a player and bringing in someone better *is* building on what we have. We can't just keep them all and buy more.

We dont need both him and Allen they are too similar, decent fee and I'd be happy to move him on. $10m plus would be a fair price

OK, and who is this better player supposedly we have to replace him with then?
My point is, it's very to easy say sell but it has to be someone better and we don't really seem to have a player in DM mould in the squad so selling a young player for 10 million with 5 years left on his contract seems a bit desperate. Even if we do bring someone supposedly better, rather at least have him in the squad at least for at least a season and see how his replacement fares.

The factor you've left out of your argument above is the question of Lucas' quality. He's OK but no more than that, IMHO at any rate, so £10 mill.for him is a decent price however much time he has left on his contract. A better player than Lucas, brought in from outside the club, isn't going to want to sit in the ressies waiting for his chance. I'm not saying "sell Lucas come what may", but I definitely am saying we need better if we're going to make progress.

Couldn't agree more - He's an 8 - 10 million player at best. We can do better. He's had more than enough time to prove his worth and apart from a brief 6 month period before his injury where did well - He's been pretty average. I say cash in.

Lucas is a good squad player but should not be starting so much if we want to challenge for the top 4.

Hendo is improving and offers everything that Lucas does plus some goals

An offer of 10 million plus would be hard to resist, that said it be worth it just to see RAWK go into meltdown if he was sold.
