Any chance of making this a sticky for the time being? I'm sure there'll be billions of thread closer to the time about it, but for now this could be used for all discussion, build-up, news, predictions etc?

Anyway, here's one to get the ball rolling:

Tommy Smyth, that insufferable Oirish ballbag from ESPN reckons Brazil won't even get out of their Group.

Have some of that.

I love the World cup, I really don't understand why anyone wouldn't, even if you don't have any great affinity with your nation, or indeed if you're nation didn't make it. Obviously it's better if you do and you are in and especially if you make the knockout stages, but I can honestly say I loved eg-USA 1994 almost as much as any other world cup (I also quietly believe that NOT making it once in a while can do your nation/ego/expectations the power of good, and it's no great suprise to me that our best ever qualifying comes after failing to make Euro 08, just as our best in competition performances came in Euro 96 after missing out in 94 and 86 after missing out in 84.)
So yeah I'm dead excited, some of my alltime favourite football moments are from world cups Ray Houghton, Gerry Armstrong winners against the odds, Vasily Rats from 45yards, Schumacher on Batiston, Cannigia vs Cameroon, Borgettis unbelievable header, Owen vs Argentina, Laudrup being as good as Maradona in 86, Negrette making my jaw drop, tha Zairean wall, Maradona, Paraguay (I always have had a soft spot for Paraguay, I don't know why, but they're so little and ugly and dwarfish and they just aren't swarthy and majestic like the Brazilians and Argentinians, or barbarians like the Uraguayans ... Awww bless Paraguay) so yeah, I can't wait, in years past I've even taken a holiday for the first three weeks so I don't miss any games, but with Molly now that's impossible, thankfully the time in South Africa means 5.30 and 7.30 kick offs so we shouldn't miss any games anyway.
Anyhow my picks to come out of the groups are above, and I'm going to predictably go for a Brazil win. I think the altitude will do for the European nations leaving Brazil, Argentina, Ghana and the Ivory coast as the strongest sides and I just think Brazil will have enough.

I love the WC too Oncy, especially the fact that it's summer and I can watch all the games with my sons now.

I also agree with your choices of who'll go through from each group (whoever predicted Brazil wouldn't make it through the group stages needs to do a bit of historical research).

I'm a bit confused by the altitude thing though: why would Brazil, Argentina, Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire have any special advantage? Most of their players play in Europe anyway.

Brazil and Spain are definitely the two favourites, for me. I don't expect England to get beyond the QFs and would be delighted if they did, but above all I'd like them to play some decent football; the last WC was a turgid embarrassment from a patriotic point of view.
Im just assuming that the south american lads will be used to it from playing at altitude in qualifying against (I think) Ecuador and Peru, that along with the fact they are as you say now more used to a European climate they will have an advantage. Brazil at the confederations cup looked comfortable untill they had to go up a gear and went up three, I don't see Spain or France or England being able to do that at altitude, I may be wrong, it might not factor, but it is a huge issue generally.
I think it's Ecuador who never ever ever lose at home due to the altitude at their stadium.
And the African lads are ya know errr African, used to the conditions, temperature etc.

The European powerhouses Germany, Italy and France look weaker than usual and Spain could fluff their lines, England have every chance but only if Rooney stays fit. Brazil and Argentina have not looked overly impressive. Portugal and Holland will both do okay but not strong enough to win.

My "shock" prediction (and I got 4 consecutive World Cup winners right until Italy won the last one) is either England or one of the African teams.

I don;t know enough individually about each African team to narrow it down but I know there is a lot of talent in each squad and with a certain degree of "home" advantage and the weaknesses being shown by other teams this could be the time for an African team to live the dream.

I'm pretty sure with altitude that unless you're living up there all the time, it's basically a question of doing altitude training and giving your body time to adapt. Presumably not all the matches will be at altitude, will they? It may play a significant part, but I doubt whether any of the teams involved have any huge natural advantage regarding this - just depends who has the best preparation.

The WC always favours countries who can keep the ball and dictate the pace of a match, which is why Brazil and Spain are favourites - and England aren't.

I'm with you guys. Simply loves the WC tournaments no matter.

I've got a good feeling about this one too, I reckon there's a lot of great matches already lined up and I'm going to cheer for Gerrard & Co. alongside perhaps Torres & Co and the strongest African team as long as it's not going to be Drogba & Co.

Oh I'll cheer a bit on the Danes as well.

With regards to the altitude issue. I know Denmark's group is to be played in approx. 1500-2000m in Johannesburg if I'm not mistaken and will therefore train in the Alpes come Spring. Don't know how much this will affect them or how much it'll give e.g Cameroun and Japan an advantage. (As Holland is about the lowest placed country on the earth (alongside Denmark) they'll probably have to adapt as well.

On the plus side it's Winter time in SA come Summer (?) so it probably won't be THAT hot after all. Max. 30 degrees where's it going to be the warmest and down to minus degrees even (at least in the night time) in e.g. Johannesburg.

England, Spain and Argentina are my favourites. With Holland, Ivory Coast and Ghana as outsiders. I reckon Denmark could go a long way too with a bit of luck evidently. Chile is my cheaky outsider for a great upset too.

I like watching the World Cup, and hope England win (well, I think I do), but I don't give a fuck about the draw, nor do I care about the tournament until it starts.

Got a feeling that the Germans and the Portuguese may be the biggest losers from the group stages. Spain or Brazil as eventual winners. England making the semi finals.

Based on the mass expectation of not winning this WC, I'm gonna boldly predict that Ingerlund will just nick it. Or barely. Maybe almost like France in 2006.

I love the WC, the town is buzzing for a whole month.
There is a particular atmosphere that makes it the greatest sport event in the world by miles.
Brazil big favorites for me...we should see basically the same teams in quarters as in Germany.
Netherlands and Spain instead of Ukraine and Portugal.
Oi. Low blow mate, low blow.
I think international football has gone to the dogs in recent years and the last two
world cups in 2002 & 2006 we're pretty poor. I'd love to see Spain win this one. Guys like Xavi, Iniesta & Torres will mean Spain are one of the favourites.

Unless they put it on the Nigerian Lotto and you win £75,000,000 Nigerian dollars. All you will need to do is give them your sort code and bank details.....

He was probably only funny cause we watched about three matches he commentated on and we were drunk. Imagine watching him commentate on a match we we're involved in? He'd probably make you want to throw the telly out the fucking window.

My fave WCs were 86 & 90, although 90 is often mentioned as one of the most boring. 86 coz I was 15 and buzzing, 90 was my first WC up the pub and, with England doing well, lead to some great nights out.
The WCs since have been a bit flat, not sure if that's age or interest or whatever. 98 was OK, didn't enjoy 02 or 06 much. The build up is always great, the tourno is quite often poor.

England have a decent chance. They are a pretty good side and some other big name sides aren't at the mo. If England can get to the quarters playing France wouldn't be too daunting, the winner maybe playing Holland or Brazil in the semis. Doesn't really hold the same fear as yester-year.
Spain from the other side of the draw although Italy are always poo yet find themselves there or thereabouts.

I can just about remember WC 86. I had the maradona shirt on all summer I was 6.

I remember 1990 quite well as I was fond of Italy for some reason and played as them on subbuteo.

Loved Baggio, Donadoni and Scolacci(sp?).

I will be supporting New Zealand this time around due to my wifes family. Go the all whites!

I'd really like to see an African team to win it for once. Apart from Ghana and Ivory Coast of course. So Nigeria or Cameroon would be nice.

I just really, really, really hope England don't win it. I couldn't cope with the media and mugs like Ferdinand, Terry et al holding the trophy aloft.

I'm predicting Brazil and hoping Spain/Brazil win it.

So do you or do you not want an African nation to win the World Cup ?
