Woop woop it's the sound of the Gak-Police

Alright let’s list down the variations we have so far. Feel free to add everyone.

Ryan Babel
Solanke
Ngog
Dele Alli

I jokingly said he was going to be the new Ryan Babel because he bullied the youth squads and then midget defenders of Ererdivisie with his size. But it looks like I was wrong, Babel had pace to burn and was kind of fun to watch in the beginning (before becoming frustratingly shit). Hope the AI Guy has the opposite trajectory

I've also seen Gakpo compared to Downing, Markovic, Sebastian Leto and Origi (not seeing this one tho) on here - but my favourite one so far is Albert Riera

I think "Dutch Downing" has a kernel of truth to it - just like “Uruguayan Andy Carroll” does: Gakpo thrives on delivering crosses and Nunez on getting on the end of those. But this time I think it will be a far more successful pairing.

Keep 'em coming.

I only call for things when the decision is blatantly wrong, but then guess it is too late.
I could never get around this shouting and demanding everything, as default. It is lame.
Yep. Have you ever seen a referee change his mind because of players shouting at him? Neither have I.

No, but I think the point by momo is fair. It swings the next decisions.
But I am talking about myself on the pitch. Some say pros argue and contest to win an advantage. I think it isn't much pro anyway.

He doesn't seem to strike the ball well which is a worrying thing

Weren't you one of the posters most excited about this signing? Don't you live in the Netherlands? What do you think about everything so far and where do you see it going?

I am glad I am not the only one that don't think he is the chosen one. It is rather sad, but unfortunately given the owners we have - I would not be surprised if our owners were up to this - "here's 37M, see if you can find a midfielder with this, if not get someone shit to distract the fans". We have this massive thread on this guy, and the fact we have midfield issues is no longer discussed.

How can you lift your head with that massive tin hat?

My first impressions of Gakpo have not been good, but I think you can forgive him for looking timid and lost in a team that's looked timid and lost for the entirety of the time he's been here. I actually think he's shown glimpses of what he's about, here and there. He's got in some good positions in the box, and the turn and shot on Saturday looked instinctive, albeit the finish was lacking. My main concern for him is his total lack of pace, though. Unless he's replacing Firmino (which looks unlikely from what we've seen thus far), I think that's going to hold him back massively.

His pace is more than enough for a winger who plays in a different way to Salah/Mane - i.e. less running into space, more ball to feet and create from there. He has an entirely different skill set - long-range shooting (not on display in an LFC shirt so far admittedly), potentially world-class crossing on his stronger right foot, generally better vision and short passing ability than both Salah and Mane. His physical size also makes him different from the likes of Anthony/Zyech/Depay/Assaidi and most other wingers who came from Eredivisie and failed in England - when he gets to grips with the physicality of the league (which takes almost everyone a few months), he’ll be able to hold up the ball much better and thus be an outlet in a different way to our other forwards - he won’t be brushed off the ball by defenders like those other “tricky wingers.”

He’s an unorthodox player for sure, but every single one of Klopp’s attackers has been unorthodox - I trust him to get it right again and maximize Gakpo’s good qualities and perhaps reveal some hidden ones as well. The lack of faith in here, despite blindingly obvious mitigating circumstances, is fucking pathetic to be honest. Reminds me of the “flabby melt” debate regarding Firmino years back.

Yep from what I saw from him at PSV he's a really interesting player, and he was basically the only exciting player for the Netherlands - van Gaal loves him cos he can do the tactical things and also be interesting. I think it's clear there's much dysfunction in our side and that makes it harder to have him settle quickly.

I get the feeling Klopp has no idea where to put him and that's actually the biggest issue. Probably Lijnders pushed this and now we have no plan.

Gakpo is best coming in off the left or behind the main striker, not playing as a 9

Its weird cos he should have been full of confidence but he came here and picked up all our woe

In fact, one of the greatest credits given to him upon his signing was his status as an "elite striker of the ball".
Jesus Christ, but I imagine even @tombrown can hit a ball better than this lad has done for the last four games.

I’d like to see you try to execute your signature move or shot while Premier League defenders are converging on you from every direction - it feels disorienting when you suddenly have less time for every move and action and any hesitation will invite a crunching challenge (which almost certainly will not be whistled by the ref). This routinely leads to scuffed or overhit shots. The difference is good players eventually adjust to this new tempo and eventually thrive in it and average ones never do.

The left forwards we have couldn't really be any more different from one another. We have one too many but we have an injury, and clearly one of our forwards is going/being sold in the summer. Perhaps two.

It made perfect sense for us to buy a forward, to me. We just needed also to buy a midfielder. Oh, and we needed a forward who would make some impact, any impact, at all. Gakpo hasn't done that yet.

"We all dream of a team of left forwards..."

Are we still thinking of Jota as a left forward? Because I don’t - for me he’s not only better in the middle, but also probably will be less injury-prone there. Jota is also the most two-footed player we have; he is hardly any less effective on the right than left flank (but both less effective than the middle IMO).

I've been scratching my head trying to make sense of the long-term plan of our attack. Previously we had the pace of Salah and Mane to stretch play from the wider-roles. We've sold Mane and signed Nunez, who provides even more pace but from central position, although he does favour the left side. This may explain why Gakpo is such a different profile of player to the likes of Mane/Diaz, etc. Nunez is already filling part of the role Mane used to, and Diaz still does. With both Nunez and Salah on the pitch realistically Gakpo just needs to be able to keep up with play, rather than stretch it and get in behind. He can then impact the game with his crossing and shooting ability, which we know he has from his time at PSV.

Given the current options, I'd like to see Gakpo on the left of a 442 with Salah and Nunez central. It would hopefully play into his strengths and get the best out out of both Salah and Gakpo.

----------Nunez--Salah------
-Gakpo------------------Elliott

We've all been calling for some form of 4-4-2 for weeks since the World Cup now for a number of pretty obvious reasons – fewer midfielders to use, tighter spacing, Salah more central etc, but for some as of yet unexplained reason Klopp (or evil Lijnders behind him?) keeps resisting. This is bizarre since the switch to a similar system helped us stabilize the results before the break, but after the WC the only time we played 4-4-2 was in a weird "diamond" against Brighton with Thiago at #10, which was perhaps the single stupidest tactical idea Klopp has had in his managerial career. This also happened to be Cody Gakpo's league debut – way to welcome the new lad and increase his confidence!
