Will.I.An

I'm guessing the problem for most is the price tag rather - would it change anything if he was going for 20M?

30M is a lot when you consider that Navas (who is brilliant) went for not much more than half that.

To be fair. And I really dont know because I havnt seen him play, but Willian has won like 15 trophies in 6 years. And was trasfered for 35m of the back of that. He cant be as bad as some are making out?
Like I said I dont remember watching him play (I dont watch Europe when we arent in it) but my mate says he was unbelievable at Shaktar and one of the best players he has seen play against Chelsea ever. I can understand the negativity because as you and Liam point out, he doesnt score much, but neither does Navas and he advanced Citeh in one game yesterday.
Id rather spend the money elsewhere, but thats simply because I havnt seen him play.
If I could pick a Left sided forward/midfielder for us I would sign Antoine Griezmann who I think is brilliant, but no one else in world football seems to rate. So what do I know.

It's as simple as this for me dude, I've no doubt he's a good player. He's not a superstar though.

And the money being quoted can buy you a superstar.

The quickest way for us to get ourselves back in a hole is by overpaying for good players, but not great ones

Yeah fair enough. See I dont know that he isnt a superstar. I agree statistically he doesnt stack up, but United, Chelsea and Arsenal were all in for him 8 months ago when he went to Anzhi for 35m I cant see how they could all be suckered into spending so much on a 'good' player.

Like I said I agree we could spend 30m better, but thats only because I dont know what this lad can do.

If you get a chance, watch Sociedad tonight, Griezmann should play and hes fucking great. Only 22 aswell and would cost maybe 15m

That's all well and good but things aren't quite as black and white as that. In an ideal world we'd go out and buy a top player with our money but that's not always easy as we've found out this summer.

The market is ridiculous now with average players regularly being transferred for 20M upwards and whilst you can still get good value (De Bruyne, Van Ginkel, Coutinho are just a few examples) you still need that pulling power to seal the deal.

Every now and again you get presented with an opportunity to sign a player that normally you wouldn't be able to and this is one of those opportunities. Willian is not a top tier player right now, you're right and if we are genuinely serious about spending 30M on him then we're probably banking on the fact that he's got another gear to kick into (it's very possible).

It's certainly possible, but when you spend 25-30 million on a player, you're essentially hoping that the players kicks on in 2 years time to become a 40-50 million pound player.

When that player is 25, and hasn't yet set the world alight, that's a bit improbable. Not impossible like - there are examples like Drogba.

Yeah, I'm far from sold on this guy. I do trust our scouting department, but I wonder if our desire to land this 'marquee' signing is affecting our judgement on this.

Maybe he's ace, I dunno, but I have concerns.

True. It's a tricky one and I'm not sure what the right answer is.

In fairness to Willian, I think he's suffering somewhat for plying his trade in Eastern Europe. He has set the world alight over there and proven to be a creditable CL performer. None of us really pay much attention to teams over there though.

It seems that the club want(ed) to take the plunge this summer with one player that could take us to the next level and that hasn't quite worked out. Perhaps the feeling that this may be a bit of an impulse / panic gamble as a consequence of that contributes to the overall sense of concern.

There was a video I saw yesterday, which nearly had me convinced. Can't find it now.

Said he had 8 goals and 15 assists last season. Can't really find any stats on this guy other than the ones rurik posted. If he's shown evidence of that sort of end product over the last 3 years, then I could be up for it.

Didn't Rurik say that the Russian league was a very tough league to score in ? Very defensive minded ?

It's a gamble.

Problem is its a 30m gamble which seems to be most of the cash we have, when we have other positions that need strengthening.

In his favour is the fact top teams wanted him & I can't imagine a Brazilian is ever gonna be even close to happy running about in shorts in Russia.

Just watched the most uninspiring youtubia ever. It was three minutes of watching him missplace passes and get tripped up.

No proven World Class player is going to join us.

So right now all we can do is overpay and gamble.

That guy who gets everything wrong on Twitter with an EYEtalian name said Roma's management team is in London to discuss Lamela ... Do they really have the purchasing power to get Willian AND Lamela w/o selling Bale?
