If Torres and Gerrard stay and remain injury free, and if Roy does the obvious with the rest of the side - I.e, sell Masher for £30M, bring in a cheaper replacement; buy a LB and LW, then we should finish in the CL spaces, IMO, and could even push for third.
So much depends upon our superstars.
If they leave or are injured then it's going to be a long, hard season. Hopefully our new super Aussie Doctor can make all the difference, because we're shit when they're not around. Really, really shit.
Hodgson should be given more slack if we suffer an injury crisis again, though, because he hasn't built this squad, and there's so many holes in it that he will not be able to fill them all this summer.

I'm feeling a sudden bout of optimism. If we start the season strong (new manager effect, anyone?) we are in with a shout to win the title!!!!!!!!!!!! Get in!
A lot really depends on who we manage to hang on/sign. Hopefully, the manager will be given what's he'd been promised. If he can bring out the best out of the likes of Babel or even Riera, that'll be akin to new signings.

Given the fans are waiting for Hodgson to slip up, the fixture list has thrown plenty of banana skins at him for the start of the season.

So long as we finish above our local rivals, I don't think we will have done too badly. And life will be bearable in the short term. That should mean we finish 5th or 6th. Any higher will be a bonus.
1st.
We can finish 4th. We had plenty of chances to do so last season and fucked up against the shit teams. We weren't beaten down to 7th because other teams spent more - WE fucked up.
Now, United and Chelsea will probably be out of reach but Arsenal can be pretty hit-and-miss, we don't know how good City will be and Spurs are hardly consistent, especially with CL football to also distract them
