"What are you passing to him for?!!"

During the game, well towards the end of the second half, someone passed the ball to Gerrard and my lad shouted "what are passing to him for?!!". I'm taking it this was because of the horrendous game he was having rather than the fickle nature of an 11 year old Liverpool fan.

Admittedly, Gerrard has been the victim this season of his and Torres' injuries, playing in a poor side and maybe even slight decline due to age. But what really got me during the game was the sheer horror at the realisation that this is something we'll have to get used to at some point, maybe (though I hope not) even sooner than we thought.

Not good predicament really, all things considered regards the way we seem to be heading. I just want this season to finish.

He (should) end up as a fine holding player. Albeit the "burst" he has will go. I noticed he ranted when dirk didn't move for a pass, yet no one dared do the sam back to him. Maybe he has earnt that, but I thought masher might have said something.

The mentality last night was a shambles and you could see confidence was at rock bottom. I see Rafa has come out in the Echo and blasted the players saying that if you go into games with that attitude then you deserve to get beat. I think the players are at least partly responsible, but Rafa has played him part more than most.

As a side issue, does anyone else think Gerrard looks really tired these days? It's like he could do with a nap.

He looks well short in terms of fitness or having that edge that he once had. He is coming back from a lengthy lay off though, but I thought he looked great for England last week, which is a bit frustrating.

Henry is getting the same thing thrown at him in Spain right now.
It's just a mix of injury and loss of form for both.

He could be right. He shit out of several tackles he would normally have thrown himself into.

He missed '02 due to injury.

'06 was Meh !

Could be something in this but I'm not going to get all hot under the collar about it.

I think he's just been shit this season. Perhaps losing faith in Benitez and not wanting him to be here any longer.

He can fuck off to Spain or Italy in the summer for all i care.

No fan of United, Chelsea or Arsenal or any team would accept such a performance from a Captain.

Fucking disgraceful!!!

So that's alright then, is it?

When you're Captain of a club like Liverpool you shouldn't be feeling sorry for yourself, you go out and give it everything.
Regardless of the circumstances.

I agree with you. I think he's acting like a petulant child and needs someone to fucking have it out with him. Preferably insua so the lad can knock out stevie and then get fucked off for his troubles

Innit?

Sell, sell, sell... Shove your Istanbul and your Cardiff's, etc, etc...

The missus wants to visit her family this weekend.

That means Mancs.

Loads of them.

I'm just trying to find something to look forward to today and so far it's bleak.

But it's ok for people to say to Rafa stuff your Istanbul, Cardiff etc etc???

And no it's not one bad performance, he's been utter shite ALL season, not the only one i know but such is the standards you come to expect from Gerrard, you expect alot better.

It's not really a bad performance that irritates me so much, it's the attitude and arrogance he displays time and time again when the chips are down. As i say a United or Chelsea fan wouldn't accept it from there Captain.

gerrard needs to play as high up the pitch as possible with as little defensive duties as possible. the people advocating him dropping back are wide of the mark, gerrard can hurt the opposition far more up the pitch. gerrard's days as a CM should be over he is a forward now and a darn good forward at that.

I don't get upset when fans turn today on the very people they worshipped yesterday.

Regardless of where he plays, the minimum requirement is to give 100% and he's simply not doing that.

All you get is dirty looks and shouting at his team-mates for not passing to him.

In times like this, he's a shit Captain.

far be it for me to make excuses but it isn't easy to keep a ridiculously high level year in year out, on top of that he has been plauged with injury. I doubt there are more players with more passion than gerrard I think he is just tired, mental and physical fatigue.

I don't agree with the "fuck off Rafa" calls, either.

We're not Bolton/Newcastle/Whoever.

He's been utter wank this season mate. If a new manager does come in, then he should seriously consider taking the captaincy off of him.

I have said a few times on here that for all his marvellous traits as a footballer, he is not a leader of men. He was given the captaincy for the wrong reasons by Houllier.

I think it's more complex than that though.

I don't think as a man-to-man person he's got the right traits, he's sulky and petulant at times, shown non more so than the CL winning season when he spent the whole year 'threatening' to walk and only really giving in over the Chelsea move because of guilt and because of the input of his family. Harsh? I don't think so, himself and the press have said as much since, his love of the club might have been part of it, but the impression I got was that people talked him down.

Anyway.. When it's come down to the massive games, like Istanbul, Cardiff, Olympiakos etc he's led by example by almost singlehandedly winning games. The problem now is that we are finding we can rely on him less and less for that and when we need someone to lift and motivate his team mates, there's no one really there who's actually designated for such a role. It's not like we don't have leaders in the side, Reina, Masher, Carra and Kuyt all lead by example and have the winning, never say die, mentality and influence. Even if it has been in short supply sometimes this season. But Gerrard doesn't always show the ability to lift a side by organising and by word. He might pick the ball up and put it in the back of the net though (fair enough!), but when he's not doing that he's not really your typical captain by any stretch.
