As a side issue, does anyone else think Gerrard looks really tired these days? It's like he could do with a nap.

He's been utter wank this season mate. If a new manager does come in, then he should seriously consider taking the captaincy off of him.

I have said a few times on here that for all his marvellous traits as a footballer, he is not a leader of men. He was given the captaincy for the wrong reasons by Houllier.

I think it's more complex than that though.
I don't think as a man-to-man person he's got the right traits, he's sulky and petulant at times, shown non more so than the CL winning season when he spent the whole year 'threatening' to walk and only really giving in over the Chelsea move because of guilt and because of the input of his family. Harsh? I don't think so, himself and the press have said as much since, his love of the club might have been part of it, but the impression I got was that people talked him down.
Anyway.. When it's come down to the massive games, like Istanbul, Cardiff, Olympiakos etc he's led by example by almost singlehandedly winning games. The problem now is that we are finding we can rely on him less and less for that and when we need someone to lift and motivate his team mates, there's no one really there who's actually designated for such a role. It's not like we don't have leaders in the side, Reina, Masher, Carra and Kuyt all lead by example and have the winning, never say die, mentality and influence. Even if it has been in short supply sometimes this season. But Gerrard doesn't always show the ability to lift a side by organising and by word. He might pick the ball up and put it in the back of the net though (fair enough!), but when he's not doing that he's not really your typical captain by any stretch.

to be fair I thought the Olympiakos game was the 'pongolle show' with gerrard only becoming interested in the game again when we pulled two goals back. he was poor in that game apart from an amazing winner and if he'd been sent off earlier he could have had no complaints.
