West Brom (h) - post match chat

A win! And against a Pulis team. Good three points, and some of the attacking football was superb to watch. Sadly, defensively there are still some huge questions, especially around the goalkeeper, because Karius - on the evidence so far - is a fucking clown.

The other obvious issue is how many chances we create, and waste. The lack of a quality striker and reliable finisher needs to be addressed. If Klopp doesn't trust Sturridge, then we desperately need to invest a large sum of money in a quality replacement. Obviously Origi is shit, and Firmino isn't a striker or a good finisher, so we are short in that department.

No, Origi is not "obviously" shit and Firmino is not a poor finisher, you just have an obvious agenda against both players.

Karius made a mistake not punching the ball clear in the sequence leading up to the corner from which we conceded and sliced one clearance out of play, everything else has been solid – he's been quick off his line and smart with his distribution. No way that performance warrants a "4."

Everyone played well, Karius was a slight worry.

Should have won about 4 or 5 -1 in the end but it became very nervous at the end.
Karius is a fucking liability. Zero confidence, almost zero communication. Barely speaks with the defenders.
Hesitates during set pieces. He's like a nervous wreck.
Can't believe I'm saying this but I hope Klopp gives Mignolet a chance midweek.

I'd be interested to see our shots to goals ratio this season.

It seems to me, without using stats, that we're creating way more chances than last season, but scoring a lower ratio of them.

Last season we had a ratio of just under 22%, second only to Arsenal.

Today we had more than 20 shots & scored 2 goals. Let's than 10%.
Liverpool´s average goals per game so far this season is 2.22 vs. 1.22 conceded (goals for are bang on for a title winning team but a tad high in goals conceded where it should be just under 1.0) however when you factor in the quality of the opposition, having played five of the top six teams, then we will be pretty damn close if we maintain this for the season.

I think Mane has gone off the boil after starting the season so well. Maybe that's a sign of the inconsistency we were worried about. The goal gave him a bit of a lift, but still there is a noticeable drop of energy compared to earlier in the season – he doesn't take players on as often or use his pace against a full-back. Still he is quite useful to the way we play and he is one of the best finishers in the squad, which is so important in a game like this.

Sorry but that is clearly wrong as he was all over them for large parts of the match. You can't expect any player to do it for 90 mins though.

Yeah, our conversion rate has been actually quite good this season; this 2nd half against West Brom was more of an exception. Mane and Coutinho's goals were the first 2 clear opportunities we've had all game, the problem was after that we had 4-5 similar opportunities and misfired. Klopp needs to talk to the players, particularly the Brazilian duo about being more ruthless. For instance that chance Coutinho has set up for Can (which McAuley blocked) would have more likely resulted in a goal if Coutinho took it on himself, cutting in on his right as he normally does. Our attackers tried to be too cute in the 2nd half and we almost paid for it.

yup i'd start mignolet midweek, give him the opportunity to prove he deserves to be number 1
Klopp does seem to be trying to instill a competitive edge between them by praising both equally

I agree with Rurik.
I think Mané has been average at best the last 3 or 4 games.
Nothing like the start of the season.
Luckily Coutinho is playing the best football of the season.

There's certainly some worries, some very strong ones, but a liability? Come on, let's not go overboard, he's not cost us any points yet, by the very definition he's not a liability, and I'm happy to give him a little more time.

Good win in the end but annoying we made it hard work. We were so far superior, it was a travesty that we handed them a lifeline.

Karius just looks appalling. So annoying to have such a weak link given the Matip and Lovren partnership looking like we might have finally got a half decent defence together.

To start with, I was against dropping Karius to avoid shredding his confidence. However, he's garbage. Can't read a cross to save his life and never seems to be in position. He actually looks like an outfield player that has been put in goal.

Question...has Karius made a tough save yet? Like the ones DeGea pulled against us.

What are you talking about? I only remember one missed one cross all game (the one that led to the corner that led to the goal). I remember another dangerous cross that was fizzed in with pace and he did well to punch it away. He also came off his line quickly a few times, something Mignolet would not dare to do. It's just bizarre how people are overreacting with Karius. Sure he's not perfect, but far from a disaster.

For the corner from which we conceded I think it was the right decision for the GK not to come out – the ball was curving away from the goal into a big crowd of players and there was a big chance of missing the ball or a weak punch. It was just one of those things – a Pulis team scoring from a set piece, that's their speciality, that's what they always do.

no

When that happens i'll be very interested. Mignolet does have the knack for brilliant saves, so karius has a lot to prove

True he's not a disaster, but you could argue mignolet wasn't either

I don't think anybody is saying Mignolet has been a disaster this season. He did well when given the chance, but there is a good reason to think that Klopp's system need a GK who is more comfortable off his line and with his feet. Whether Karius fulfills that role remains to be seen – he hasn't convinced yet, but also hasn't done anything to give up on him. There is nothing strange about a young goalkeeper having some nervous moments as he adjusts to the new team and league. None of his mistakes cost us points, so that's good.

I don't think he's been anywhere near as bad as people make out, way overboard on the comments.

1 awful kick, ok... Mig averages 20 bad kicks a game....

In terms of flaps, don't recall him doing too much wrong...

the goal conceded you can't blame him on, team at fault

yes he's been poor so far but Mignolet coming back in is not an option.

Oddly enough, in all the games he has started so far our opponents played in a very defensive manner (including United) so he had almost no opportunities to make real saves. I recall only two – a Reina-like sliding tackle after a Henderson back-pass against Derby and a pretty good left-handed save, if I'm not mistaken, against Hull. Everything else was routine and the 3 goals he has conceded in 5 games so far have all been unsaveable.

That might be another thing will have to adjust to if he's going to make it here. Mainz is a a bit of a gung-ho team, so Karius always had to make a lot of saves. Now he barely has something to do in games, other than catch a couple of crosses and pass the ball to the CBs. It's a different game requiring different mentality.

Palace next week will be another test. In Zaha and Townsend they have genuine width and obv Benteke with a point to prove up front. Expect more of the same.

However, We could just just give Benteke a few one on ones to get Karius confidence up.

It's all been said...outstanding first half and we should have been out of sight by the time they scored.

The goalkeeper is the big worry. I'd play Mignolet against Spurs this week and see where we go from there.

Good atmosphere today too.

I guess you saw the latest one on one he fucking messed up

Yes. It cost a lad in my work £300

We run a comp where you pay £1 a week and pick 5 scorers. They all score and you win the pot. If no one gets 5 then it rolls over.

It was up to £300 last weekend. He picked Costa, Walcott, Wilson, Austin, Benteke.

Shame.
