Jurgen Klopp - Liverpool stayed cool on transfers as it would have taken 'completely crazy money'
Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool stayed “cool” in the January transfer window because it would have taken “completely crazy money” to land one of his attacking targets.
The Reds have come under fire for failing to replace Philippe Coutinho, who was sold to Barcelona in a £142million deal.
Liverpool shattered their transfer record with a £75million swoop for Virgil van Dijk, but with Coutinho departing and Daniel Sturridge joining West Brom on loan concerns have been raised about the depth of the squad.
A move for Thomas Lemar was considered but Monaco’s £90million valuation put the Reds off. Liverpool also tried and failed to convince RB Leipzig to bring forward Naby Keita’s summer switch to Anfield.
Adam Lallana’s latest injury setback didn’t alter the club’s plans and Klopp insists with the options available it was the right decision to wait until the summer to make further signings.
“Unfortunately our business is only from the outside that easy. You miss a player for a week and you think ‘okay, we need another player’,” Klopp said.
“Yes, we could have done something. But we need really the right thing. The right thing now, you don’t get. The 100% right thing, only for completely crazy money that really makes no sense. I’m not even sure that would work. And in the summer it looks different.
“That’s how it is. To do something just to have any solution that makes no real sense, to be honest.
“People obviously ask ‘bring him in’ because someone is injured and you need somebody else, but then the other one is coming again and you weaken both or the third one, it makes no sense.
“In this situation, you really need to stay cool. It’s more difficult when you’ve lost two games but you need to be serious still.”
Klopp has previously cited the return of Lallana, who missed the first half of the season with a thigh injury, as one reason why there was no panic to replace Coutinho.
However, the England international recently suffered a fresh setback against Swansea and has missed the past two matches with a groin problem.
Lallana is also a doubt for Sunday’s crucial Premier League clash with Tottenham at Anfield but Klopp still believes he will have a big part to play over the coming months.
“It’s really unlucky,” Klopp added.
“It was a really serious injury in the summer. Because of Adam’s quality and attitude in training it looks immediately like we can put him in, (but) physical-wise he’s not fit.
“The two things that happened after his big injury were in the 10 or 15 minutes after he came on. From nil to 100 in a second, and that’s maybe what caused the problem.
“We really tried to be sensible with it, to do the right thing. But it didn’t work, twice. It’s really not a big thing (the latest injury), three games is like not being injured.
“He’s maybe available for Tottenham, and if not then he’ll have missed three games. That’s really okay but of course it’s not cool. The body needs to adapt again to the intensity.”

I love Klopp as much as the next guy, but blow me, that sentence right there (if indeed you can call it a sentence) smacks of someone who had no fucking clue what to say.

Ive read that hes pushed the Kirkby development, dont know how integral he is to the change but I think Pearce suggested he was the key driver behind the development/ upgrade

The thrilling performances are largely down to his tactics, and the very precise instructions he appears to give to attacking players. Most other managers leave the attack down to instinct and focus upon defensive organisation, but Klopp does the total opposite. That's not good for being successful, but so far it's made our attacking players improve and start looking world class, when really it's mostly down to them being coached in a way that it's harder for them to fuck up. World class attacking players generate far more revenue than playing in the champions league. Salah is already £100m plus. I wouldn't be surprised if we repeat the trick with his eventual replacement. As long as that money keeps rolling in, I think his job will be safe and secure.
If we sell Salah after only one season, this place will resemble Nazino island on a bad day
I doubt we'll sell him yet. Even so, Mr. Henry will get his annual erection when a bid for £100m comes in for him, he'll reject it, act like a boss for the fans and soak up their adulation, then wait patiently whilst stroking his shrivelled cock waiting for the following summer when he'll accept £120m odd.
Plus it's also not how it works. The M.O. is that someone bids for one of the players, we reject it in big flouncey terms, then sell next summer/transfer window. So we've got Salah for another year to 18 months at least.
