We play Newcastle tonight...

It's also worth noting we're a bit decimated at the back. I'm loathed to talk about stretching the squad, we've spent enough money, but we're clearly without a few good players who at the top of their game would have seen us walk away with a more comfortable win. Not the greatest performance, but given the suspensions, injuries and the lack of a real striker out there (I know), it wasn't that bad.

You're right of course about the back, but for me, with that defence, reason would tell you to keep the ball away from it whenever possible. Instead we stuck to the 'chase me! chase me!' routine faffing about, which seemed needlessly reckless in such a game. I mean, when Lovren made a cushioned header to a Newcastle player... Get the ball up the other end, please, whenever possible.

Thought we were awful and a half decent team would have got a result against us. Almost as lethargic as the crowd.

There's a reason he is ignored - he's not very good, albeit the difference between him and Borini is marginal.

You couldn't judge it this season. It's obligatory to forget but he's an England international who played in the world cup last summer. If you put him on with ten minutes to go, it isn't a mad idea to try to get him some service.

I agree with the part about fucking around at the back, I should have said, I just think with all things considered, we did the job.

What's laughable about the pissing about with the ball in defense, is that we knock it around the back line 10 times, then give it to Mignolet to hoof straight back to them.

Exactly. I just cannot figure out, with our huge 'video analysis' and stats staff, that no one has yet pointed out to Rodgers that empirically it hardly ever works. We just delay losing the ball by about a minute.

You have to be pleased really. As Mark says we've a few injuries and we won 2-0.

Granted it might have been a different game had they been given the penalty but we still closed out the game in the end. It's all about points at this time of year.

We are obviously trying to condense the match into about 30 mins. With our goal-scoring record that, statistically, gives us more chance.

And all the time, the opposition progress and pen us in, we're inviting pressure to then pass the ball to a keeper who's incapable of booting it past half way.

Moreno works to improve by carrying around an old Alonso puppet for luck:

Sterling is on the verge of becoming an out of this world player - the thinking is all there, the pace is all there, the technique is there, the strength is there - just lacking execution. if he carries on at this trajectory, he is going to be a very scary player. clever move by Brendan to sub him early so that he can receive the plaudits he rights deserves.

I still can't get over that first goal.

The early touch for the first goal was great - and so out of character for him. I agree about his potential, but he's been coached intensively now for about four years and his execution really hasn't improved THAT much. I rather doubt it's going to suddenly click now. Mentally he's always lacked that rare precision that real strikers have. In other ways, though, he's set to be a brilliant player.

Sterling is also on the verge of disappearing into obscurity if he doesn't sort his shit out.
