Hes not underrated on here, its just some of us don't treat him as if hes already realised his potential. Hes got a long way to go before he can be considered to be as good as people like you are making him out to be, and this ejaculatory policy towards him is only complicating that. He needs to remain grounded and focused to become the player we all know he can be, unfortunately this media frenzy and thrusting him into the position of national wonderboy is only making things harder for him.

I am not a pedant, there are others on this site better suited to that pantomime role, however, no one has said he has realised his potential. Instead, you described him as not 'remotely close' be being a great player - this type of description makes him sound like januzaj at Manure. I ask again - which 20 yr old in world football has achieved what he has and has his potential? None - this alone suggests he is a unique talent who is on the VERGE of something spectacular.

CELEBRATE him whilst we can and whilst he continues to score goals and play well. CELEBRATE and REJOICE.

What has he achieved?

Pogba was bossing the league for juve

James Rodriguez ripped the piss out of a world cup

Goetze has won league titles and a world cup winners medal

Muller has been a don for fucking years

A lot of players haven't realised their full potential and have achieved more, with greater consistency

I'm talking about potential and him being on the verge of something great. No one is saying he is there now. If we start talking about 'success' as the be all and end all, the we are down Traore with a champs league medal territory.

Back to the example - how many 20yr old NOW, not yesterday, but today, are doing what is he is doing now?

Interestingly, when Pogba was 20 he went to Juve had a great season and won Euro Golden Boy award - who won it next year? Raheem. Pogba's 22 now.

Rodriquez at 20 was at Monaco, doing well, not ripping it up at a world cup.

Goetze is a great shout, but he is not 20 now.

Goetze and muller are both great shouts.

Sterling has done NOTHING yet. Absolutely fucking zip. In his 2 seasons of regular football, he didn't play for half of one, and he needed January off this year and has given us a lot of average performances.

Potential wise he could be great, but I don't think he'll ever be world class.

As for a current 20 year old, you're asking for a very select group. Varane of last year (as a 20 year old) won the Champions League.
Memphis depay was fantastic at the world cup

that's my point - there's no 20 yr old in the world like him - that is some compliment. Sure he has achieved little (Golden Boy winner is nice and his goals ratio is good too), but there are few, if anyone, who at this point in time has the same combination of talent, age, ability and level of performance.

There are some at age 21 and 22 who have achieved more than sterling ever will. So... Yeah.

Achievements has fuck all to do with whether a player is a world class talent.
If that was the case we would never have signed Suarez.
Ridiculous argument.

He's the one who said "what he's achieved".
He's achieved nothing. He's a starter for Liverpool. That's it.

And Suarez won the Dutch league and scored a fair whack of goals over there at groningen and ajax

I was wondering why you were so focusing on 'achieve' I can see now from my old post why. the thrust of my argument is that his potential at his age in incredible and probably incomparable. agree that he has 'achieved' little in the sense of trophies and so on, but as djimi has shown us medals can be misleading.

He's won the European young player of the year something that the likes of Bale,Suarez and many other top players didn't achieve at a similar age.
He has every chance of being a world class player not many 20 year olds have done what Raheem has done so I'm not sure where this 'he's done nothing' bullshit has come out of.

Medals are misleading

I've suggested players with greater potential, have achieved more on the pitch, and have achieved more in their trophy cabinet

Sterling is a very good, if not ridiculously inconsistent player. I've no doubt he could develop but him not convinced he will reach higher levels

Not many have done it, but not many are guaranteed to go on to be fantastic. Anderson and balotelli won this award. He has every chance to be world class, but does he have the application? I don't know

sure, he is not there yet, but there are few his age who are closer.

Well his attitude on the pitch is pretty faultless as he chases down everything and takes his kickings without much fuss but it was probably clear from early on that his off the field issues might be a problem.
I can't think of that many players who've done much more in terms of goals or assists at his age in a top league so to suggest he's done absolutely zilch is ridiculous.

Hes done more than zip then. But I just don't see him being anything close to one of the best attacking players of his generation, or even developing in to one

Time will tell but I don't want to find that out whilst he's in an Arsenal jersey.

What the players have achieved in terms of medals is irrelevant when you talk about potenially being world class.
Goetze plays for Bayern and before that Dortmund and the best international team in the world.
Rodriguez turned 23 last season right after the WC.

If you put Sterling in the Portugese league with Porto or in the Dutch with PSV then I think you'd see him score the same amount of goals as Deepay or Rodriguez.

Potentially there arent many better at 20 years old imho. Comparing him to 22-26 year olds is pointless at this stage.

I think Sterling has the potential to be World class or just below that but it depends on his attitude and how he manages his career. If he stays with us it also depends on how we perform and what type players we get around him and our manager.
Winning the league or not is irrelevant though for him to be labelled World class somewhere in the future.

I never said he wasn't a great player, he is one, I disagreed with you when you ridiculously said he was on the verge of being one of the best in the world. You say whilst he continues to score goals, wasn't this his first in eight? How about we all stay grounded, and stop with this ridiculous hyperbole.

Sunday will go a long way to seeing what he's really made of I reckon. He should storm that game. If he goes missing it will tell us a lot about his character. I think he'll have a decent career and it may be that he fucks off somewhere and doesn't make it off the bench enough, but he seems to have talent and guts to play for a top club for many years. It would be quite nice if he felt he could stick with us and actually help us become great again, instead of looking elsewhere. I wouldn't be surprised if he just fancies living in London. full of flash young twat footballers that think they are DJs and fashion label icons. Nobs.
