We need a new GK!

There are other positions that need better players as a priority but if the chance is there to get a better goalkeeper, we should do. The saves yesterday were brilliant, but you can't judge a keeper on things like that - they were just instinctive reactions. Its the decision making that defines the real quality.

Ming was excellent against Stoke, but his distribution needs to be so much better (transitioning quickly from defending into an attack, typically with a long throw or such). He tends not to see the opportunity to do this (or simply doesn't trust himself to make the pass or throw effectively). Therefore everything always stalls and slows down and we have to build from the back every time instead of catching the opposition out of position and on the back foot. It's something that all the other keepers in the league are much better at, and it helps teams that are having a tough time breaking down set defenses.

And that is Ming in a nutshell, brilliant instinctive shot stopper, good reader of Penalties. However weak at distribution and prone to errors when under pressure.

He's had some good spells this season but we've seen enough over the course of his time here to suggest that his chances of becoming a top class keeper are slim.

Almost every keeper in the league is capable of making great saves and have games or runs of games where they look unbeatable.

We need someone who can keep the errors down to a minimum and have a positive impact on the defence as a whole.

Yeah, there's no way I can advocate sticking with Mignolet.

I'd like a top keeper as second priority (behind a top DM), but I think Klopp may turn to Karius instead.

It was a great performance but let’s see how does till the end of the season against some “lesser sides”. These teams have a tendency to pump balls into box, which is where mings flapping has costs us points.

He's a good keeper and definitely one of the decent second tier ones, but to win stuff you need to unearth (or pay a fortune for) a De Gea, Cech, Lloris, Coutois etc. I think Karius was a punt on a possible young one of those. Not shown anything so far to prove it though. Reina's the only top class one we've had for 30 years.

So you think Milner has done a sufficiently poor job that we need a LB more than a CF or a DM?
Seriously?
I think in the main part Milner has been excellent, easily one of the best 4 or 5 LB in the league.

It's a matter of opinion. For the main part Milner has been good, occassionally found wanting both in pace and positioning but on the whole one of our best performers this season. Let's go all rafa facts on you.
  • Fact, no other team challenging for the title would have a midfielder in defence.
  • Fact, Milner will be 32 next season
  • Fact, pace is not Milner's strength
  • Fact, height is not Milner's strength
  • Fact, your pace gets slower as you get older. It's a Rafa fact.

We need a specialist LB AND a specialist DM. And yes that's before a CF. Sturridge can be replaced.

Hahaha ok.

Eric Dier and Victor Moses are both midfielders who are playing in defensive roles for the top 2 teams in The Premiership, and there's plenty of fullbacks who aren't exactly tall

Fact, you also get shorter as you get older. Milner will be a dwarf any year now, just hard to predict when.

Dier played defence at youth levels, he's still young. Moses plays wing back.

I think we need a first-team LB regardless; we are going to be in Europe next season and even if Milner remains first choice he can't play midweek and on the weekend for the whole season. Basically we need to replace Moreno with someone better.

I'm not so concerned about "midfielder at LB" stuff; Borussia's Piszczek was a converted striker who became one of Bundesliga's best full-backs under Klopp tutelage. Milner has excelled at the new position and actually his performance in the first half at Stoke reminded me why he shouldn't play in CM any more.

Paul Joyce seems to think that we have Ryan Seggegnon as our left back target.
So I would imagine that Milner will be continuing in that role for another season or two if that is the case as I cannot see a seventeen year old starting that many games for us at left back, regardless of how precocious a talent he is

Nah, I think he's way too young to be considered for first team. In my view we need someone who can actually compete with Milner. We've been linked to Kolasinac, Riza Durmisi and Theo Hernandez, I think this means we are looking for a senior LB this summer.

At youth levels he could hack it. At senior level he's not good enough for the back four other than as a stand-in (though I do rate him at DM).or he'd still be playing there.

That said, I don't think replacing Milner is anywhere near top priority. We should strengthen any position we can, including LB, but our needs are greater elsewhere.

Eric Dier isnt a midfielder though. He's an average centre back that looks less average as a midfielder. Edit: Quiffing here I see.

We need a new left back and Moreno will most likely leave. I was surprised when Joyce said Atletico Madrid wanted him on loan in January.
Sessegnon seems like a player we'll be after and hopefully Kolasinac. Will Sessegnong move to us without any promises of first team football?

I'd put it somewhat differently. I think he is a midfielder, one who found his true position through luck rather than judgment. TBH I've never thought he was even up to average standard as a CB (and he's even worse at RB), not in the Prem anyway.
