Cult Hero XI

No idea what formation this is but

Kelleher (as second choices go, what a hero)
Kabak
Big Nat
Williams
Aurelio
Kevin Stewart (good couple of games then swapped him for Robbo)
Endo obv
That lad Teixeira for doing a pass to win a peno when i thought we'd win the league under Gerrard
Benayoun
Mellor
Origi

Cult hero probably means you're more popular than your contribution would imply, so I doubt any of them qualify.

Although you can probably just be a bit quirky/lovable too. Matip is probably a cult hero.
Yeah, that's how I'd define it too.
Erik Meijer would like a word with you all.

They weren't legends were they?

Just checking to make sure you’re not going near Ireland or an Irish pub anytime soon?

Also, if you don’t think Steve Nicol is a legend, I’m going to assume the best case scenario is “you didn’t watch much football before the mid 90’s” with the other end of the scale being “you don’t know anything about football”.

Oh, hang on. So they have to be shit?
Nah,

Steve Nichol was one of our best ever FBs. He was an absolute legend. He played 456 games for Liverpool and had 45 goals and 46 assists. He won a European cup (and without the European ban this would have been multiplied), 4 leagues, 3 FA cups and 2 league cups.

He played on the left and right almost equally well, and was regularly used in midfield too, such was his quality and versatility.

Just what does he need to achieve legendary status?

I've tended to take the view that cult heroes are players who were a bit shit but people liked them anyway.

However, there aren't enough of those players to fill a team. Noone will have patience for that many shit players, and quite rightly so. So I guess some actually good players will end up being included.

Arphexad

Heggem
Bjornebye
Phillips
Traore

McAllister
Endo
Biscan

Origi
Rosenthal
Meijer

So you're saying that he never won the premiership? No champions league either.

I think you've answered your own question there.

You forgot to add he is tombrown's all time favourite player.

If you want candidates from that era you could go for Nigel Spackman, Kevin Wooden Legs Macdonald, Barry Timotei Venison ... maybe Craig Johnston.

But I am not sure about skippy

Apparently if you look up Barry Venison on the official website, under appearances it says: Usually in the form of a blonde mullet.

I never thought I'd see Traore's name associated with the word hero in any capacity.

What qualifies him as a cult hero? He was pretty shit and from memory nobody really liked him.

The '05 CL run was amazing but instant cult hero status? I don't know about that. I think you need to have had some stand out moments to qualify.

Yes, I was to-ing and fro-ing with him.

I guess ultimately I put him in because he was by far the shittest player we've had who won the European Cup which has to be some kind of notable achievement.

Was either that or Phil Babb, whose only real stand out moment was sliding into the post that time.

Let’s address the donkey in the room.

Darwin is definitely on the list.

Too many people think a cult hero has to be a great player. It is the opposite. They are popular or notorious for whatever reasons. Kolo Toure is probably another one to add to the list.

----------------------Kelleher--------------------------
--Babbel------Phillips-----Kyrgiakos ------Aurelio
-------------Endo------Sissoko-----------------
--Kuyt-----------------------------Shaqiri
------------- Origi -Titi Camara-

For various reasons, I’ve developed a lot of affection for all of them, be it sympathy for their injuries, appreciation for their work rate, respect for being a dependable squad player, or their important contributions off the bench. There are also those unique moments, like Camara playing for us on the day his dad died and scoring the winner, Sissoko playing half-blind for ages, The Greek looking and playing like an angry Spartan, or Phillips seemingly having a forehead made of lead.

Stevie and Ronnie absolutely are Liverpool legends. Nicol is, for many, our greatest ever RB. And Razor was absolutely brilliant for us, part of one of our strongest ever teams. When did you start watching us?

Honestly I was really young then, and my fav players were Rush, Barnes, Aldridge, Beardsley, Staunton, Alan Hansen, and McMahon... I remember Nichol only just, I remember him being good, which is why I stuck him in Cult Hero status.
Ronnie Whelan I remember had way too many own goals for my liking which is why he isn't in a category higher
Ray Houghton is an awful pundit but was a decent footballer but not above Cult Hero status

The thing that tells you everything you need to know about Steve Nicol, is if you pick your greatest ever Liverpool XI, Nicol is in the running for about 3 seperate positions - RB, CB & LB… and he could do a job in midfield as well.

There isn’t really another player like him - cracking player and as genuine a legend as you can get - it’s just we are fortunate as a club to have had loads of legends!!!

Marcus Babbel, only played 42 league games for us, the same amount as Ibe, less than Shelvey. Not enough, imo. So, falls into the area of, popularity exceeds his contribution.
