Cult Hero XI

Great thread idea. Here's my take, post 2004 (with the exception of Gary Mac).

For me, cult is where either:
  • Some very specific legendary performances linger in the memory far out of line with their overall quality/impact
  • They have some ultra memorable behaviors, incidents, nicknames or memes
  • Remembered fondly or with humour

Dudek

Flanagan
Kolo
Matip
Aurelio

Endo
Biscan
Gary Mac

Garcia
Crouch
Origi

Subs:
Kelleher
Nat Philips
Klavan
Dossena
Lucas
Momo Sissoko
Minamino
Bellamy
Neil Mellor

Sadly, this side is about as good as many of our sides from 2004 to 2016 were. Yikes. Some real memorable characters though. Brings a tear to my eye.

I'm going with.

Jerzy
Traore
Kolo
Xavier
Dossena

Sissoko
Biscan
Smicer
Gonzales

Camara
Origi

a wonderfully balanced team of utter madmen who for no apparent reason produced magic and made us believe before being shit again... forever.

Camara for that goal
Sissoko mainly for the eye thing.
Dossena for the lob over vanDer sar beating United 4-1 and I'm sure he produced another a few weeks later.

Kolo cos he took his wife's weight loss drugs and xavier cos he's a mad blonde hair and goatee looking guy.(i met him at the airport in 04 euros..where he was gonna sign for Spurs apparently)

Traore/biscan/smicer/jerzy for 05

Gonzales cos that goal we saw before he started then the winner in the champ league first game and was just absent after.

Divok cos other than his mental goals he didn't do much.

I never thought I'd see Traore's name associated with the word hero in any capacity.

What qualifies him as a cult hero? He was pretty shit and from memory nobody really liked him.

The '05 CL run was amazing but instant cult hero status? I don't know about that. I think you need to have had some stand out moments to qualify.

Goal line clearance in the final to get us number 5 means he's a hero forever.

I don't care that he did a pirouette v Burnley in the fa cup, I almost don't even think about how he had acres of space no one near him and still manged to score a worldy own goal.

Sorry but there's absolutely no way Xavier or Gonzalez could ever be described as cult heroes. Apply yourself next time.

I don't think anyone has listed Milner? Is this because he's seen as being more than cult in terms of his impact?

He's just a full blown hero, mate... A fucking legend.

That's what I think, too.

I posted my XI in a friends' chat and they queried about Milner. I feel he's an actual legend.

In fairness, Matip is too. But Matip also has the zany memes to make him a cult player too.
