Big risk this for Chelsea and if it goes wrong, ie they finish 2nd and don't win the Champions League, where do they look next? He might be great but with Roman's track record, anything short of that and this won't end well for them or him.

It's still a gamble lads, who knows how he'll fare under Roman's dictatorship.
And that's the key point. They've had half a dozen of the world's best managers over the last 5/6 years under that cunt, and none have a) appeased Roman enough, and b) stayed. Abramovich, you've got to remember, is fucking clueless about football; he has no idea about long term strategies, sustainable success, and plans that go beyond 12 months.

He wants shiny, sexy football with trophies falling out his arse. He doesn't have the players or the patience for that - so any new Manager is pretty much fucked.

There's a suggestion this morning on SSN that he's having second thoughts about the job.

As well as Roman there he's got a very experienced (possibly just old) squad who are known to get their own way or get managers sacked. Unless you get carte blanche to rip up that squad, and the funds to replace them that isn't a great job to take over right now.

This. Someone on the radio said yesterday that, the way things are in that dressing-room, appointing Villas Boas would be pretty much tantamount to appointing John Braveheart Terry.

Chelski are becoming the new Real Madrid under Abramovich. Don't bother planning for any length of time in the future, just instant wins of league's and Champions leagues or out the door you go. As an up and coming manager, would you seriously want to possibly de-rail your career at such an early age? It's ok for the older brigade of managers who get another bumper pay day regardless of win or fail, but for someone just embarking on your managerial career, it seems an awfully big gamble given Roman's track record.

hope he doesn't take the job. I read a book on his football philosophy and tactics and he sounds extremely proficient. his win ratio at porto is insane, yeah yeah rubbish league, but he manages to transfer that dominance over in this league...

Looks like he will take it. Not really a surprise to be honest. Its not as if they were going to end up with Dave Bassett is it? They always get a big name.

Will be interesting to see how he gets on and whether Abramovich is willing to part with some money without trying to choose the players himself

Chelsea target Andre Villas-Boas has resigned as Porto coach, according to reports in Portugal.

The 33-year-old has been linked with the Blues in recent days following the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti in May.

Porto insisted on Monday that Villas-Boas could leave if a rival club paid £13.2m to activate a release clause in his contract.

The Lusa news agency has now reported Villas-Boas has terminated his Porto deal by paying the amount himself.

More to follow.

i really think itl be hard to break into the top 4 after this, chavski will probably win the league, scum in second, city look like they might start playing as a team a bit more, reckon theyl get 3rd, but interchangeable with the arse, people always write them off but they're always up there, and i think wenger will spend big this summer, he knows its his last chance

Doesn't change much for me Lewy. Chelsea were always going to be up there next year. We can beat any of the top four as we've proven - it's the smaller teams we need to improve against. The ones who shut up shop.

Exactly

In some ways a stronger Chelsea is not necessarily a bad thing. If they can take points off the likes of City, Arsenal and Spurs then sure it will mean they are more likely to win the league but it could allow us to close the gap on the CL places. I could certainly live with that for now.

yeah i suppose chelsea where always gonna be up there and around, guess its just far too early to say

Its not like he's a cert for success though. The squad needs massive changes regardless, but they were always going to get a big name manager or someone exciting up and coming.

Actually thought they would go for Hiddink myself. Safe and all that.

our league is becoming ridiculously competitive.
you have teams were managers have decades of experience (2).
you have teams with almost a blank cheque (3).
now add to a mix young hungry manager with fresh ideas (and a blank cheque).

Chelsea target Andre Villas-Boas has tendered his resignation as Porto coach, the Portuguese club have said.

They made the announcement in a statement to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission.

Villas-Boas, 33, has been linked with Chelsea in recent days following the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti in May.

Porto insisted on Monday that Villas-Boas could leave if a rival club paid £13.2m to activate a release clause in his contract.

"FC Porto was today notified of the intention of Andre Villas-Boas to resign from his contract with the club by triggering the release clause immediately," read a Porto statement.

"The contract will be terminated once the required amount is paid."

Do porto play decent football?
they play attacking football. I guess 'boring boring chelsea' is a thing of the past.

So far all he's proven is that he's a one hit wonder, hyped up like all the other young managers doing the rounds. Boas, Klopp....blah blah blah. I'm hardly crying with despair at him taking over that plazzy club.

Who was the other bellend everyone was creaming their kecks over, the Valencia manager? He was supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread according to some. He seems to have slipped right off the radar now.

Agreed.

When i was about 24 I remember thinking how mad it was that a lot of premiership footballers were younger than me, then in my early 30's as my generation of footballers began to retire and the ages got younger and younger (now theres players born 2 decades after me). And today im about to be older than a premier league manager.
Kinel.
