United post-match

To anyone at the match last night, what was the atmosphere like? It sounded very flat watching on TV which surprised me.
I was in block 202 and it was quiet for the most part. Mostly out of frustration it seemed. That's what you get when your form is like ours prior this match.

Manc ref got more abuse than anything. Haha

I know this is the time to show some maturity, consider the lads age, allow a bedding in period, etc, etc - but Karius just looks.....well, a bit shit doesn't he?

He'll undoubtedly improve somewhat with coaching and exposure to the first team, but is anyone seeing signs of a high quality keeper with just a few flaws that need ironing out? Aside from getting some award in the bundesliga, what is everyone putting their faith in?
Well that award (2nd BTW) was based on a whole season in the league with traditionally the highest quality (or thereabouts) keepers in the world. So I'm assuming that there is a lot more to come once he has settled into a new side, new country and new manager. At least that is what I'm praying for.

It's not that wild an assumption to make though. Man City have the money, a great squad and a great manager. Spurs and Arsenal have settled top four teams/squads that have been improved (though in Arsenal's case, not that much) in the summer. And it's still early days for us. Last night doesn't change a great deal in terms of momentum or expectation, but it does show that we're still in a position where we could lose one or two players and our effectiveness drops sizably.

Both Spurs and City looked weaker without Kane and De Bruyne respectively, I think it's a harsh assessment to say we're anymore susceptible to injury than they are, especially when you consider their European commitments.

Nobody in their right mind would argue that City have more strength in depth than us. We had fucking Lucas on the bench last night

The ref was good though

I guess he was, although there seems to be no logic to the way refs behave in big games like this. They tend to act in the first half as if it'll take only a little less than a leg break to book anyone, then in the second half it's as if they've set an alarm clock that, once it rings, tells them to start judging fouls as fouls. But then they've so lost their normal perspective they don't seem to know what counts as serious or trivial. It's so artificial and I'm not at all sure it's a better way to ref than just to show at the start you'll not stand for any nonsense.

You're right they wouldn't, and I wasn't, I was saying that we aren't anymore susceptible to losing our best players than the other two, no matter how deep your squad is, losing your best player hurts. The squad depth is much more important when dealing with a larger of fixtures, something we unfortunately don't have the pleasure of dealing with.

His team had 35% possession and 1 shot on target. Okay, I know we only had 3 ,but 2 of those would have been goals had it not been for De Gea. The media should be murdering him as he' boasting that he did not lose. His team is very expensively assembled squad, and on paper man-for-man better than Liverpool.

I wonder if his stint at United is dead in the water? His turgid style won't last with their fans and I think his style in general has mixed results these days. His comments last night would have seen him crucified as our manager.

It will depend on whether or not he wins anything in his first two seasons

If he does, I don't think the fans will care too much. That's assuming he doesn't implode first

Those teams seem better than us, and always finish above us. So I was taking a guess based on recent history about where they will finish.

Of course, it would be great if we did manage to finish above City, Arsenal and Spurs, but sadly we usually don't.

I suspect the bigger battle will be between "the rest" which includes us, United, Everton and Chelsea.
Depends on how far spurs go in the CL. Arsenal and city will finish above us but I think we have a genuine chance for 3rd.

If nothing else this match and the associated comments from Mourinho pre and post, reminds everyone what a monumental, horrible cunt he is
Indeed he is. He and United deserve each other. Were I not a Liverpool fan I might find it quite sad that this once all-conquering club had been reduced to such levels of desperation by Mourinho. But as it is, I hope he's there for years...with each passing game pouring more and more of poison between the very sinews of the club.

Rashford, I think it was, should have been booked in the early minutes. If the same foul had been committed later in the game he probably would have been.

Macca has it spot on, although it seems the ref's always seem to do exactly as he does. A few minutes before half time they get at least one booking in.

It's like an unspoken blueprint. I can only assume it's because there's unofficial pressure to 'keep the game moving' & leave eleven vs eleven for as long as possible to protect the 'brand' of the Premiership, & not giving early cards makes it seem like that's the case.

It actually dilutes the sport though. It's also obvious many players take advantage of this by throwing in very hard or dangerous challenges within the first few minutes.

Is it any wonder the atmosphere was shite?

That's such a depressing photograph. I love the respect we pay to opposition goalkeepers but to be photographing a manager...especially that manager...on the way to the dugout...Jesus, I have no other words.

That photo is potentially misleading.

Mourinho is right next to them. Our players & Klopp are on the pitch behind him, it's fair to assume they could be videoing or photographing our manager & players celebrating.

Now, I don't like anyone using phones like that at all at the match, cos it's fucking weird if you ask me, same with gigs etc, you don't need proof you were there, cos you know you were, you'll never need to watch that video again, no one else wants to see your shitty home video, selfie or photo when they can see properly shot hd ones easily, & you've paid money to enjoy that event. So fucking put your phone away & enjoy it.

If they don't finish top 4, and they play this kind of football, I think he'll deal with what LvG did in his second term where he's basically a dead man walking.

Read an interesting rationale for the selfie generation, in that with the amount of social media fucking bullshit and lies, the selfie is proof that you haven't made it up, or nicked a photo from someone else; your face in it acts as a certificate of authentication

Doesn't explain that meff just actually taking a photo of Mourinho though. Perhaps he was going to add a Photoshopped cock into it later?

Being generous

But that's just it. Why bother? Who gives a fucking shit if anyone believes you. I've had a drink with both Jamie & Louise Redknapp, & have met loads of players in the nineties, but quite frankly I couldn't give a shit if anyone believed me or not. I certainly wouldn't go shouting about it on Facebook or Twitter.

The majority of this generation is self obsessed & utterly vacuous, & they don't even realise it's not normal behaviour.

Luke got new badges at cubs last week, first thing he did when his nan sewed them on was ask me to post a photo of him wearing the jumper to Facebook. As if that's all that he wanted them for.

He & his friends all play games round here at times, & to a child, they sit & commentate on their own games like youtubers do, whilst one of them films it.

It's learned behaviour, & it's fucking shit.

So "it's pretty clear" translates to "I was taking a guess"?

Hahahaha.

It's useful in training their brain to think several steps ahead and run through numerous alternative outcomes/reactions before deciding upon their action/photo. They have more awareness of more variables. When we were kids, we did one thing, with one consequence upon one or maybe two other people. Enjoyable but ultimately mundane stuff, especially for someone like me. Now these kids receive input from hundreds of different people, its a much more complex system that they need to master in order to survive. Hopefully they will become good mathematicians for it. Or good at quantum mechanics. Or be good at coming up with new and innovative ways of thinking, new technologies, anything that will allow you and I to live forever. Well that's the plan, or I'll kill them all.

I usually use my phone before the match but not during.
