UFC

The BBC have an article that includes this, rather confusing line:

McGregor, 26, won in Las Vegas to become the first UFC champion from the Republic of Ireland or United Kingdom.

What's that supposed to mean? Is he from the UK too?

Fair play to the lad. One of the advantages of Australia was able to watch it in the middle of the day.

He looked done half way through the second round. He must have taken 10 elbows straight to the face and just kept thrash talking and asking for more.

Those body kicks in the first winded Mendes and he looked absolutely f*cked when he got back up just before the end of the second round.

Some punch to end it.

His punches and kicks aren't the quickest but the accuracy and timing is top notch.
His flexibility seriously helps with his kicks too, which he's supremely confident in.

Looking forward to seeing how he improves his ground game.
As someone who grew up doing stand up martial arts, I love seeing these guys beating the wrestlers, particularly wrestlers who can only do a big swing, tackle, ground and pound combination throughout entire fights.
Bores the crap out of me.

He did really fucking well. Only just watching the fight now, had it downloaded but just got round to it.

My father in law actually used to teach mma & hates watching ufc simply cos there's so much ground game. He based from Thai kickboxing & hates the wrestling side despite being able to teach people how to combat it.

He no longer teaches it, he claims cos he down at want to, but I suspect it's cos he refuses to admit that fighters need to have at least a basic wrestling base to succeed.

However this fighter arguably proves that you can still beat wrestling based mma fighters by simply being boss at everything else.

Dont like boxing mate, havent a clue.

Im not about that night either, its my Work Xmas party so no drinkies for me!

No hassle mate. @Squiggles might know of some bars opening late for it closer to the time?
It's month away yet but some of the lads thinking of changing flights to accommodate watching the fight.

There'll defo be bars with it on, I'm almost never out in town now so fucked if I know which ones though.

I go to town so rarely now I feel like a tourist myself when I do!

Yeah it will definitely be on somewhere. I know Leo's Casino at the docks usually puts stuff like that on.

Thanks lads. I'll tell the lads we should be okay to watch it so. 5am though!!! We might need something to keep us *awake*.

Not sure I like this sort of shit talking before a fight, but still

“After we saw his fight against Chad, we could see that everything was working out as planned and that we would win the fight. I mean, we will win the fight,” Aldo said. “Be sure that I’ll put my hands on him like I’ve never put my hands on any other opponent. I can just see the win ahead of me, and I’m going after it. I’m not going to lose focus. Of course, I’m going to leave him seriously injured and bring my belt back.”

Oh ya, from start to finish, Holm completely out boxed her and had Rousey stumbling around the octagon. I think Rhonda just came out looking to end it quick and got caught.

Makes me wonder if all the distractions in Rousey's life, like her relationship with Browne, controversy between her mom and trainer, movie career, etc. took a toll on her focus.

Brilliant result, I'm nearly as pleased as the crowd was. Her, anderson silva, connor mcgregor, jon jones - I love seeing any of those fuckers get ko'd.

Much more likely that Jones KO's himself than someone else.
And Connor?
Well, he's talked himself into a beat down.

Unfortunately Jones is brilliant, and I can't see him losing. He just fucks up outside the ring.
Connor will be outclassed massively on paper by Aldo as Aldo is superior in every aspect of the game, but I would not be surprised at all to see the little cunt get a flukey wonder punch and win after being dominated, much like in his last fight.

Does your guy Aldo not have a record of being a loud mouth cocky bell end as well?

Aldo has a history of keeping his head down and winning. But it's now more and more becoming about stars must be good infront of the camera's and talk shit before fights, much like boxing. It'll be a sad day if some of the true greats of the sport have to talk shit on the camera's just to make a living.

From what I've seen of Aldo he's always been pretty quiet and humble, in the build up to Conor anyways. But anyone could look humble next to him.

My company went and scheduled our Xmas party same night as the fight. Livid. Did the same thing to me to me for our foreman's retreat. Anyone know about streaming the fights on a phone??

@Modo mentioned something about an app that's good for streams. I can't remember in what thread it was in, though.

I must admit, I only loosely follow UFC, it's a bit brutal for my liking.

Hey @Modo what's this app athens is talking about?! I've got 2 weeks to get this sorted, and the apprentice I put in charge of figuring this out is really letting me down!

Mobdro for android. Just search for mobdro and modo on the football forum and you'll find the post.

Well it's a big big card this weekend (preceded by Joshua and Eubank!), with a lot of fights I'm interested in for a change, there's normally 1 or 2 at the max.

Aldo v McGregor - On paper Aldo wins this easy as he's better at everything, every aspect. But things don't always go that way. The only way I see Conor winning this is by KO as he hits hard and Aldo doesn't really. If it goes to points, or the ground, I see an easy win for Aldo.

Weidman v Rockhold - Another impossibly close fight and I really like both fighters (much like Cotto v Canelo the other week), and a really tough one to call. I've not seen Weidman backed up, and I'm sure Rockhold will back him up for some of this one so we'll have to see how he does. I think this one might go the distance, and a decision to Weidman.

Jacare v Romero - Jacare is a master, and his striking has come on leaps and bounds as it's not his natural game, but Romero is a beast, hits hard and fast, and is supremely powerful. I just think he might gas and then play into Jacare's hands.

Maia v Nelson - Two really contrasting styles here with Nelson being the striker/grappler and Main being a submission artist not to handy really standing. Fancy Nelson to overwhelm Maia on this one, but Maia has embarassed great grapplers before.

On a side note, be interesting to see if anyone (mcgregor, romero?) struggles with the IV now being banned and how they rehydrate after their cut. Is only really going to effect the big guys. I'm not sure how they manage this one, how can they see/check if you've been on a IV rehydrate?
