LIVERPOOL’S latest World Cup winner cost £26million – and was unearthed in the cosmopolitan footballing destination of Madrid in Spain.
The Reds’ first World Cup winning striker came from more humble origins.
Sir Roger Hunt was spotted playing for Stockton Heath, near Warrington – and the man who found him, 90-year-old Harry Mooney, remembers it like it was yesterday.
Now retired and living in Winsford, Harry, a former valued member of the Reds bootroom, was a scout who used to report to legendary star spotters Geoff Twentyman and Tom Bush.
Harry explained: “Tom Bush was in charge of bringing players through the youth system and I used to see him at Melwood.
“One day he asked me ‘Got any good ‘uns for us, Harry?’
“I told him all about a striker I’d seen playing for Stockton Heath in non-league.
“But when I told Tom he was 20 years-old he said to me ‘I thought I told you only to bring teenage players for me?’ but he soon changed his mind when he saw him play!
“I knew straight away he would be a good ‘un.
