... deserves a thread of his own. What a way to answer the critics! I still want him in (attacking) midfield, but it's a great sign for him as a player how he was able to focus on his defensive duties when the team needed it more than ever. That one moment in the 2nd half when he read De Bruyne's cutback and left his position to clear the ball had me cheering as if it was a goal. This lad has the brains and the heart of a Liverpool player.

Loved his performance. I think it was clear that he got told to leave Sane out in space and let him run at you rather than charge him down. Sane often looked like he didn't know what to do against a composed opponent who managed to get a foot in every time. Sublime in its simplicity.

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

I understood the worry about him against sane.

But fuck me.

Such a complete performance

Never doubted Trent. I've maintained that he's the better full back prospect than Gomez.

His problem is going up against players who can outmuscle him, not those who can outpace him. Zaha and Rashford are both considerably bigger and stronger than him, and that's something Trent's thin frame just can't handle yet. Once he fills out a bit, I expect him to deal with those sort of players a lot better.

There will be some inconsistencies still to come of course - he's only 19 after all. But he's an amazing prospect. His passing and usage of the ball from the full-back position is very rare.

Right from the off you can see Citeh had targeted him as a weak link. Still, our players had no qualms at all about passing to him and letting him play it out especially in the first half.

It tells a lot when his fellow professionals have no hesitation in trusting him with the ball in the biggest game of the season.

In a year or twos time when we move him into the centre of midfield, and he's bulked up, he's going to become an absolute monster of a player isn't he?

He's got that hunger and passion, he's already got the nouce to latch on to loose balls and burst forward, he's already got one of the best deliveries of the ball at the club, his shot isn't too bad either, and that's one thing which will starkly improve as he grows into his frame.

I'm really starting to believe that this kid will become the new Gerrard, the parallels are just too stark.

I think he'll move to midfield in about 2 years, unless klopp buys a right back this summer.

Hopefully his midfield instincts haven't been too dulled by then

Wonderful for him and wonderful to witness. But he problem with Trent is that he just gets 'spooked' on some occasions and there's no obvious reason why it happens in some games and not others. Hopefully that will fade as his experience grows, but what potential he has.

I wonder if he's one of those players that if they fuck up/get ripped within the first 5 minutes his head goes.

We've seen a few of them

There's something in that, although, again, there have been times when he's not looked at all bothered. It's a bit baffling.

He was 18 yo at the beginning of the season. One can understand if now and again some doubts creep in or maybe it was just a lack of experience and being unsure how to cope with particular circumstances/players. Now the back 5 are settled he seems to be taking giant strides and will surely be on the plane to the WC this Summer which should add even more to his locker and benefit us.

19, what is he going to be like in 3-4 years if he's this good now !

Tremendous performance.

But I'm still worried about City targetting him in the 2nd leg. They'll try and get him on a yellow early on and the crowd on his back.

The kid will be a bit inconsistent and he'll make more mistakes, but he was brilliant yesterday. I'm sure that Klopp is looking to get Clyne back in but the kid has a very bright future.
This game against Man C doesn't definitively prove anything just like the game against CP didn't.

And Clyne back would give us another option (AA) in midfield, for the last few matches of the season, where we are definitely now thin on the ground.

I thought he was fantastic last night. Sane just gave up and decided he was never going to get past him.

Dunno about that. Gomez, Walker, Trippier and Bertrand can all play there too.
Depends on how Southgate sets up. walker played right hand side of a back 3 last few friendlies and Bertrand has been faff at left back, so right backs never happening

Another player who can play multiple positions might be useful

[article]Liverpool teenager Trent Alexander-Arnold’s exceptional season has been rewarded after the defender triggered an incentive bonus in his contract.

Alexander-Arnold signed a five year deal at Anfield in July last year, but the club realised the 19-year-old had the potential to make sterling progress in the year ahead.

Several appearance clauses were included to recognise his development, and the most recent was activated after his 30thsenior Liverpool appearance, improving his terms. He has now made 39 appearances under Jürgen Kopp.

The 19-year-old has continued to prove his value throughout a breakthrough campaign, particularly excelling in the Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City which he followed up in with a man-of-the-match display against Bournemouth over the weekend.

Liverpool’s Academy graduate has seen his role significantly elevated over the course of this campaign, his adaptation to a right-back position even more impressive when it is considered he has spent most of his youth career as a midfielder.

Although Liverpool do not publicise player salaries, it is believed the youngster’s has significantly increased to at least around £40,000 a week as a result of his performances.

Further recognition may yet follow if Gareth Southgate is convinced of Alexander-Arnold’s England credentials before the World Cup, although England are not short of quality on the right of their defence with Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier.

Like Klopp, Southgate will be buoyed by Joe Gomez’s upbeat assessment of his injury, which could put him back in contention for the trip to West Bromwich Albion this weekend.

Gomez is hopeful of being fit for The Hawthorns after recovering from the ankle problem suffered while on international duty. He has missed the last three weeks, including five Liverpool fixtures.

At the very least, the 20-year-old expects to be available for the Champions League first leg against Roma. Klopp will be relieved Gomez’s condition has improved having lost Joel Matip for the rest of the season and seen Dejan Lovren limp off with a tight groin in the closing stages against Bournemouth.

At this stage, it seems Lovren’s substitution was a precaution.

Liverpool need two more wins to guarantee a top-four finish, and Klopp is aiming to build on the buoyancy around the club after recent results and performances.

“The mood is so positive in Liverpool; we had a walk in the city – which we always do when we’re in the hotel (pre-match) - and it kind of felt like a parade already, people were clapping their hands and beeping their horn and shouting ‘Well done’. We still had to play Bournemouth,” said Klopp.

“We know it was good but the next game needs to be good as well. That’s quite a challenge for the human side of us. The boys did really well.”[/article]
