Transfer Rumours

I'd be very surprised if Spurs don't come in for him. IF they don't then that says one of three things a) they have no cash until they sell b) MP doesn't rate him as much as we do or c) they already think his price is beyond his value. If it's a) then that would explain why we want to get this done early.

I think it's a combination of those, but a contributing factor has to be the drastic increase in wage bill last summer. Replacing one Bale with numerous players on relatively high wages will have made a decent dent in their transfer budget.

I don't see why we need to show our hand that we're willing to pay any fee until another club proves to have the means to get involved though. Poor planning all around it would seem.

We wont be signing Remy now that we've signed Lambert. I think Rodgers will sign a Shaqiri type player instead.

That could see us sign Lambert, Lallana, Can, Moreno, Lovren and Shaqiri. Excellent window if we pull it off.

How is that excellent? Do you mean excellent as "we can't do any better"?
If you add Sanchez to that list or Muriel, is it still excellent?

You know why think it's meh? Because none of them will significantly improve our starting XI. Hence marquee signing.

what frightens me is the lack of defensive players we're being linked with. Dont get me wrong I love being linked with Shaqiri and Sanchez etc. Our defensive frailties cost us last season though so it should be our number 1 priority! Alberto Moreno is a good start I suppose but we need 2 centrebacks and a rightback also in my opinion.

We need to get rid of a few defenders as well.

Papers think we've all but signed Moreno and we've been heavily linked with Lovren.

It's a very good window where we strengthen all positions that we need to strengthen.

Or (d) they already have a ton of midfielders, so until Pochetinno gets to see them a little in training, he can't decide yet if he wants to bring in another or spend the money where they need better quality / reliability (e.g. strikers and defenders).

I don't think this is quite how Spurs / David Levy works...

Most of the sources are saying we're paying a premium to wrap up the Lallana deal before the WC, but I have no idea why we're in such a hurry. I can't see a good performance doing any more than justifying the fee we paid at best, and that would be off a stellar performance.

If we wait it out, especially to the point where Southampton are obligated to sell him after all the deals they've done, we'll get a much better deal. Plus with our large contingent on his international squad, he'll likely be more interested in making the transfer happen, helping us negotiate a much better fee.

The deals we should be wrapping up are players are the ones whose fees could increase a ton with a good performance. That's chiefly Shaqiri, and possibly Alexis. Granted, I can't see us signing all three of these players, but the logic still holds. Shaqiri especially could have his value skyrocket with a good performance.

You could argue that a strong performance could also make Moreno a target for every major club out there, which makes sense why he's a priority target. But I can't see Lallana ballooning into a 35M or 40M player who every club would love, even with a fantastic WC performance. And by the sounds of things, we're the only club who's seriously interested in him, which makes it even more bizarre that we're willing to pay whatever price Southampton want, especially before a major tournament that will at best justify the price tag.

I don't think you can underestimate the exposure a good showing at the World Cup can give you. At the moment, there doesn't appear to be a great deal of competition for Lallana's signature. That would almost certainly change with a stand-out performance at the World Cup. What's more, Southampton would be in a much stronger bargaining position. What you're proposing is banking on Lallana having a poor to average World Cup and then getting him at a cut price. Even if you're right and his value isn't affected by the World Cup, what happens if we get priced out of a move anyway? It would leave us much less time to pursue an alternative, and would ultimately weaken our bargaining position for other deals. It therefore makes perfect sense to try and sign him early.

Rodgers has obviously identified the players he feel can take us to the next level and he's eager to get them wrapped up as soon as possible. Makes sense, surely? Given how we've missed out on targets in the (recent) past by hedging our bets and holding out for a better fee, I would have thought this kind of assertiveness would be welcomed. Lallana is clearly Rodger's first choice, and he's prepared to pay a premium to secure his first choice targets. Given what the second choices were last season, I think it's for the best.

@thisisanfield: Turkish media reporting that a deal for midfielder Emre Can has been agreed betweeen Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen for £12m.

Skysports reporting Fabergas made available and his preferred destination Premiership with a release clause of £30 million.

@JackSear: RT @Andrew_Heaton: Reason Lambert won't be announced until Monday is because Ian Ayre is in Spain and apparently not just for Moreno.
