Tottenham v Liverpool Match Thread

The most upsetting part for me is that Spurs, through years of sensible transfers (bar the post bale blip), astute managerial appointments, and correct investment in youth, have surpassed us.

Year on year they've developed, identified weaknesses and progressed to perennial champions league club

It should have been us, but we're so fucked up with mismanagement from top to toe, we're unlikely to catch them without dramatic investment

At least you understand the size of task that Klopp's got.

It's isn't just about buying a centre half, or two, or sorting out the spine of the team, although that would help of course. The club needs a rebuild from its foundations. I don't know if Klopp or if there's anyone out there who can do it, but it's been needed since FSG took over. I guess FSG are hoping Klopp can do a Dortmund but he didn't do it by himself there.

Size of the task my arse. We needed defenders and we bought attackers. The goalie is a shithouse and everyone can see it.

Klopp is Wenker v2. Everyone can see what the problems are but he's so stubborn he won't address them.

Fuck him.

We needed attackers too. If we didn't buy Salah for instance...

Glad I missed this one...

Caught the first 20 on the radio and we sounded really shit. I predicted 4-0 to either side pre match but I didn't think it'd be us. Been found out big time.

Least Everton are being shit ay!?

Why is Rodgers even relevant? Is that the best you've got Macca? Every time someone gives Klopp a bashing, you revert to reminding us of the failures of the previous manager. Do you want to talk about Dalglish too? Another criticism that's completely taboo in Macca land.

Whenever someone challenges your opinion of Klopp, you churn out the turgid response, about the failures of someone else and how we'll never get anyone better (or some other bollocks to absolve of him of blame for anything).

Change the bloody record and quit with sanctimonious crap about how we're lucky to have him. He should be feeling lucky to manage US. We're one of the biggest names in football with a history that is repeatedly being failed to be lived up to, and unfortunately he's just another in a long line of managers who's failing to get anywhere near to matching that hype.

Irrespective of Rodgers or anyone else, what we're seeing isn't good enough and only a fan who is desperately clinging to their stubborn, unwavering decision to completely back the manager unequivocally, would try to defend this shite.

No manager will ever do anything with that team? Not making ridiculous decisions like paying £40m for a bench player we didn't even need, would be a start. So spare me the rubbish about how hard done to he is with this team and his budget. He's just spent a £100m on a player who won't be here for a year and a benchwarmer, so fucking give over.

I think the two issues are now under scrutiny , a line is being drawn between those who blame the owners and those who blame Klopp, in my opinion neither are up to much, in fact I think both are little bit shit

It's a bit rich the one-man flag waver of undying love for Rodgers questions why he's mentioned. And before you labour into your only lamentably lazy and utterly otiose response, it's a bit different to thousands of flag wavers for someone else. Grow up.

Never. Ever will there ever be a worse summer by any club ever than the summer when Liverpool needed a CB a DM a Keeper and a Striker and bought a Winger and a CM who we will get a year later.
Never. Nothing compares.

Roy, Kenny, Rafa and Brendan bought some SHIT players but at least, AT LEAST they were in the positions we actually needed.

I'll never ever get over it. Seeing fucking Lovren, Firmino, Mignolet, Henderson, Milner and Can fucking around week in week out doesn't help.

If you only have 100m to spend while the oppo has 300m the least you should do is buy the players where you are weakest.

Honestly like Klopp is a cunt.
I'd say at least Rafa bought shit and won shit.

Our defence is so shite that we might as well not bother anymore about it and just give our 'promising' players some experience.

Lovren is finished here so give Gomez a run at CB. Trent can play RB.
Mignolet is crap so play Ward (Karius shouldn't be even allowed in the stadium).
Moreno can't defend so give Robertson a go.

There's no coaching that'll save that lot today - they all just need upgrading. Same with our midfield. Can/Milner/Henderson must be the most pedestrian, undynamic midfield 3 ever. They're all the same player.

I can't even think who should be our captain. We're so average in so many positions, its untrue, and thats compounded by a complete lack of character. There's only Salah who can hold his head up after that shite today.

Probably has nothing to do with our game today but, here is Lucas explaining why there's always going to be a gap in midfield as long as Klopp is in charge.

He will never buy a DM.

If only Jurgen got a Hyypia, a Finnan, a Riise, a Carra (and a Gerrard) to start his reign ... hey, let's talk about lucas and how great a defender Matip is.

Hyypia got lightning fast once he left. The trick is to sign decent defenders, slate them for a while, then let them go and call them legends.

Was Hyypia slated?

Loved Big Sami.

I reckon he’d probably struggle in this current setup though. Rurik is right - we need to accept our limitations and start playing to our strengths.

I was suggesting more or less the same thing while I was watching us being humiliated by Spurs. Gomez could surely do a better job at CB than Lovren, and this season I am feeling that a player with Trent Alexander Arnold's all-round abilities should not be left out of the team.

Forget the title this season and I know it is not even Christmas yet. This season is to build for the next. Yup throw in the youth. They cannot do any worse. I have never seen a more leaky defense. Almost every offense in the first half resulted in a clear chance for spurs. I stopped paying attention to the TV to save my ticker.

It was total humiliation.

1st Goal: Louvren and Moreno letting a stupid ball pass thru. Then watch Louvren slow track back. If he had of kept up a pace, he would have caught Kane. Didn't try.
2nd Goal: Milner too slow to catch Son
3rd Goal: Can gives away possession and a free kick. Matic heads it back into the center of the play (WTF?). Can and Co ball watching, not marking anyone. Comedy of errors, with Can as lead protagonist
4th goal: Mignolet to Blame. Dropsy. Firminiho makes a great save on the line (Fair play)

So so bad.

Mignolet was also partly to blame for their 3rd goal. His starting position was ridiculous (on his line practically) for a ball into the box. Given how high we were defending, he should have been much further out and would inevitably have come and claimed that. Would have taken a wonder strike to beat him from there as well as making dilemma for free kick taker too. However, symptomatic of Mignolet not taking control.

Otiose. Fucking Hell I had to look that one up. Word of the Day !

1st goal - Lovren stupidly trying to play offside and letting Kane get through without a challenge. Mignolet then compounds his mistake by rushing out and missing the ball leaving an open goal.
2nd goal - Lovren stupidly trying to head a throw by Lorius but completely misjudging the flight of the ball and letting Kane run through again. Then our super duper slow midfield can't keep up with Son and he taps in from Kane's cross. Mignolet was close to the shot but as Gary Neville said he wasn't good enough to save it.
3rd goal - Can lost posession in midfield because he hesitated on the ball , lost it and had to foul the spurs player. From the free kick spurs had 2 players in the box and we had about six, Matip headed poorly away to the edge of the box and the rest of our players watched as Alli ran onto it and volleyed in.
4th Goal - Mignolet came for a cross from a set piece and punched the ball about seven or eight yards out to Vertonghen who volleyed it back towards goal, Firmino did brilliantly to clear off the line but as the rest of the Liverpool players stood like statues Harry Kane was first to react and smash the ball home.

Comedy of errors from the centre halves and the keeper but the midfield didn't help at all and Tottenham were too fast and energetic for us all over the pitch. We did score 1 good goal and could have had a couple more but only when Tottenham were trying to play the game out and you got the impression that if they had needed to spurs could have got a few more.

Rodgers had less fans when he left, he was well thought of when we came second. Not many managers do have alot of fans left when they go, because 90% of the time they're sacked because of poor form. If Klopp eventually goes, he might end up the same, who knows. I don't see why you can't talk about Klopp and address the actual valid criticisms of him, but instead you have to bring up the previous manager as a reminder of why Klopp is here. What was the point of that pathetic Scotland jibe?

Shall we talk about Hodgson and Kenny too? Or better still, here's a thought.. we could always talk about how our defense hasn't actually improved one bit since he's been here, or our other gaping flaws, but no, let's talk about Rodgers or someone else to avoid talking about the actual issues.

Oh and it's a bit rich you telling me to grow up. Says the poster who routinely throws his toys out the pram when he's so much as challenged over a point. Put me on ignore Macca, like you do with every other poster who dares to question your profound authority.

I don't want Klopp sacked, but he needs a wake up call and i'm hoping this is it. If we continue in the same way can anyone really complain if he gets the sack by the end of the season?

That's not how I saw the first goal at all.

1st Goal
Lovren correctly tried to play Kane offside - and he would have been but for Gomez, who was looking straight across the line and could see his fellow defenders' positions, failing to step up and get in line with Lovren and Matip (as was his responsibility). However Lovren then made an unforgivable error, he paused and spun his head around to look at the linesman expecting offside - obviously it wasn't. He then tried to play catch up but that pause and look at the linesman meant he was a yard short in preventing Kane getting a shot off, he could easily have closed him down and prevented that if only he had not been so amateurish with the look at the linesman, and had played to the whistle (even appealing as he ran if needs be).

3rd Goal
Matip : can't blame him 100% for the poor header back-tracking as he was, however everyone else just ball watched as it fell for Ali. A lot of blame must go those ball-watching (at least a few of them).

Agree on 2 & 4. A long litany of individual errors. We (Klopp) can talk about concentration but sometimes players don't have it in them, they are just too fucking thick.

That's how they should be viewed.

The reason i thought Lovren was stupid to try and play offside was that Kane wasn't in a threatening position if the defender is goalside and although you're right that Gomez should have been in line with the rest of the defence, Matip wasn't in line either and it's debatable as to whether he was playing Kane onside also. Lovren then not knowing where Kane is was unforgiveable. If Mignolet stays on his line and doesn't rush out like a tit then it's a lot harder for Kane to score. Matip paused and appealed for offside instead of playing to the whistle. It really was poor play all round by our defenders. The only one not at fault is Moreno as he was marking Son.

Matips defending for the third was awful and his header didn't even make it out of the box. The rest of the players are also culpable as they didn't react at all and had failed to mark Alli anyway but an International defender should be able to head the ball more than 5 yards.
