Torres agrees contract extension

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has agreed a new contract at Anfield until 2013, with an option for an additional year.

The former Atletico Madrid star has proved a smash hit in England after moving in a record-breaking deal in 2007.

Torres, 25, who hit his 50th goal for the Reds in last Sunday's win against Tottenham, was already tied to the club for the next four seasons.

But Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has moved to secure the Spain international for the long-term.

The Reds boss told the club's official website: "Fernando is one of the best strikers in the game today and, at his age, can only get better.

Commitment
"Every major side would want him in their team, but he has shown how much he wants to achieve success at Liverpool by committing his future to the club. He's a special talent, but still has the hunger to improve his game."

Torres joins Dirk Kuyt, Daniel Agger, Steven Gerrard and Benitez in agreeing new deals at Anfield over recent months.

Benitez added: "We've made huge progress this season and now we need to take the next step.

"We are building something special here and securing such important players on long-term deals means we can move forward with confidence.

"This sends out a very positive message to everyone connected with the club."

The contract becomes unprotected after 3 years, that means another club can come in and buy him without Liverpool's consent. By renewing the contract we increase the length of time that it is protected.

Or at least thats the way I think it works going by playing Football Manager.

It takes at least four or five to really notice the difference, and then they go more translucent and watery and not very milky at all.
