Where do we find the money to sign 2-3 midfielders at one go when prices are going crazier and crazier - the more we drag on, the higher the fees in the transfer windows to come.

The fees are mental but there is also value to be had if you're willing to take a risk and / or accept some baggage.

You're not going to get the latest hype players, generational talents or even "good" players in long term contracts in some cases... but we know that doesn't mean there aren't good players out there.

This summer Bissouma, Soler, Tielmans and others all went / available for "reasonable" fees.

Definitely. Like how we landed Diaz too. My mind was too pre-occupied with the fees of our supposed top targets like Tchouameni and Bellingham.

This doesn't come as any surprise. Losing Rudiger (alongside VvD as the best CB in the PL last season) & Christensen, Azpilicueta is 33 and Thiago soon to be 38 yrs old, disruption was to be expected. Even Jorginho (30) and Kante (31) are just off their previous peaks. They have not done well this last transfer season (Koulibaly 31 and in a new league, Fofana unproven).

They'll be fine.

At worst, they'll spend another £250 million on a new Defence and Midfield.
It worked for United. It'll work for them as well.

Don't think the new fella is as keen on eating £1bn a decade in losses as Roman. There are lots of EPL clubs owned by American sports tycoons, none of them plough money into their clubs

Cucarella was a weird signing was it not? Felt like there was some sort of point proved with regard to city’s prior interest. Chilwell their other mega money left back was just returning to fitness and they had Alonso.

Maybe they reckon Chilwell with be a semi permanent treatment room player.

Yup it was absolutely a big dick contest. Mental note: it's never a good idea to buy a player that City think is too expensive.

It's not quite that simple. For instance City wanted to sign Virgil before we got him, but pulled out of the bidding because of the fee Southampton were insisting on. They seem to have a ceiling over which they will not go. Unfortunately for the rest of us, that ceiling is pretty high in itself and even the squaddies they sign will cost well on the way towards it.

So Tuchel sacked and the shortlist is

  • Harry Potter
  • Zinedine Zidane
  • Maurico Pochettino

Is Haaland their new ceiling 😉

That's probably right, but IMO it skates over differences of circumstance between the jobs he's had. He did well at Southampton and in the early years at Tottenham building up average squads/clubs (even later on at Tottenham I reckon it was a near-miracle he got them to the CL Final against us, though he did mishandle that - thank goodness - by picking an unfit Kane). PSG was wrong for him because it wasn't that kind of job, and as it happens I don't think he'd be the right fit for Chelsea for the same reason, but (again IMO) ManU would have suited him down to the ground and I'd defo consider him for the Leicester job if Rogers goes.

I was actually thinking if Potter will bring Caicedo with him, given Kante and Kovacic's fitness issues in recent seasons.
