I don't think it will be a borderline decision, gents. The King's purpose in suggesting himself to begin with was to tide the club over till the permanent appointment of someone else. I doubt that will change even if he gets the gig and things go really well.

Liverpool plot double January swoop on Stoke and Villa - whether Hodgson stays or not

Liverpool’s new American owners are ready to bankroll bids for Stoke City’s Ryan Shawcross and Aston Villa’s Ashley Young – whether Roy Hodgson stays or not.

Top talent-spotter Damien Comolli will be in charge of Liverpool signings this month as the Kop chiefs draw up their plans regardless of Hodgson’s future at the club.

Comolli has lined up a bid for Young, fighting Manchester United in the £15million race, while he and Hodgson watched centre-half Shawcross in action last week. But United could also mess up that deal – they have the first option on Shawcross, a former reserve at Old Trafford.

The Anfield regime are looking to invest in the best young British players. Top target is England Under-21 striker Daniel Sturridge, who has told Chelsea he wants to go to Liverpool on loan after making just two league starts in two seasons at Stamford Bridge.

Anfield chairman Tom Werner and supremo John Henry believe the best way forward is to land rising stars, a policy that was begun when Kenny Dalglish took a hand to recruit Raheem Sterling from QPR and Charlton’s Jonjo Shelvey.

The review of Liverpool’s spending tactics under Rafa Benitez proved to the Kop chiefs that they had to get back to the ‘old’ Anfield ways of finding domestic talent and bringing them through.

Young’s camp know that Liverpool want him even if Hodgson goes so that deal could go through despite any possible managerial upheaval in the next few weeks.

Brazilian Lucas Leiva is being offered a surprise escape route from Liverpool by Spanish side Villarreal.

The La Liga outfit have lost playmaker Marcos Senna for 10 weeks to a thigh injury and have contacted the Reds about a potential £4m transfer.

Lucas joined from Gremio in July 2007 for £12.7m and struggled to make an impression, although his form has improved and Villarreal have been watching his progress.

They have now decided he is the sort of player they are seeking to help them cope with Senna’s absence.

Its the mirror. Where did it earn the credibility iin the the first place?

if lucas were released then our only defensive midfielder would be poulsen. I know bren lucas' guts but I'd rather have lucas than...NO ONE.

Meireles can do that job, especially since nobody's going to be expected to play it as purely defensively as Masher did. He has in the past, and it'd certainly suit him better than being stuck out wide.

That's the way I see it. Changing the manager would only mean that we would have somebody new to complain about.

I kinda agree, but you'd hope that the new gaffa wouldn't have tendencies to throw together line-ups like Wednesday's one though..

Well, I don't agree with Oncy or Portly on this. The squad as it stands is not ready for a genuine title challenge but it most certainly is ready to play a sod of a lot better than it has under Roy.

absolutely judge. I think we have the quality of players to achieve 6th with competent management but it will be up to owners how much they want a CL place and then how much they want a league challenge.

HODGSON GOING, MAYBE SOON, AND DALGLISH COMING IN
So what's the latest on Roy Hodgson?

Well, the Sunday Telegraph says it's all over for Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish is on his way in.

The Independent on Sunday is sitting on the fence and declaring the Liverpool owners are still thinking it over but that an interim appointment is a growing possibility.

And The Sunday Times reckons that Hodgson will be staying on for the rest of the season.

So, in short, nobody probably knows.

'Liverpool's owners are so determined to end Roy Hodgson's reign as manager that they are now prepared to delay the search for his long-term successor until the summer and install a caretaker until June, raising the prospect of an emotional return to the club for Kenny Dalglish.

'Despite Saturday's last-gasp win against Bolton, Hodgson's persistent failure to elicit consistent results and performances from his team, as well as the breakdown of his relationship with the club's fans, has convinced Fenway Sports Group to bring forward their initial plan to review his position in the summer' - The Sunday Telegraph.

'Liverpool's owners are weighing up appointing a temporary manager to see the club through to the end of the season, a move which appears to open the door to Kenny Dalglish fulfilling his desire to return to the helm of the club where he remains a legend.

'The injury-time winner by Joe Cole - Roy Hodgson's late substitute - which sealed a 2-1 win over Bolton Wanderers yesterday is unlikely to convince Liverpool's main owner, John W Henry, that Hodgson should see the club through to May, and it is with a growing awareness that the right permanent manager cannot be found in mid-season that he and Fenway Sports Group appear ready to appoint on an interim basis' - The Independent.

'Roy Hodgson will survive as Liverpool manager until the summer - but will not lead them into next season unless he inspires a big turnaround. The embattled manager was given breathing space thanks to a Steven Gerrard-inspired 2-1 win over Bolton, though the measured approach of Liverpool's owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), is what is keeping him in a job.

'FSG, whose representatives spoke to Hodgson to offer encouragement before yesterday's game at Anfield, are understood to hold deep concerns at their club's direction under the 63-year-old. They will take their time and do their research before deciding which manager they want.

'FSG are set against changing managers midseason...They also want to give Hodgson his chance. For him to survive, Liverpool would have to make spectacular advances between now and May' - The Times.

NEW PLAYERS ON THE WAY TO ANFIELD AS WELL...
Meanwhile, The Sunday Mirror is reporting that 'Liverpool's new American owners are ready to bankroll bids for Stoke City's Ryan Shawcross and Aston Villa's Ashley Young - whether Roy Hodgson stays or not.'

According to the paper, Damien Comolli will take charge of Pool's recruitment plans and he has decided to bid £15m for Young while, because of a desire to sign British talent, the club's 'top target is England Under-21 striker Daniel Sturridge, who has told Chelsea he wants to go to Liverpool on loan after making just two league starts in two seasons at Stamford Bridge.'

My sister used to have a neutered tomcat which was absolutely vicious. I'd far sooner have that managing us now than keep Roy on. And the cat's been dead for 6 or 7 years.

Liverpool are ready to buy Preston’s Northern Ireland international midfield starlet Adam Barton as they build a squad for the future.

The Anfield club have been plotting raids on several youngsters in a bid to return to their old philosophy of grooming top young talent.

North End have been asking for £5million for the 19-year-old, but Liverpool hope to lower the price with add-ons.

Latest rumour out of Italy is that one of our rumoured targets, Reto Ziegler, is off to Malaga.

Palermo midfielder Josip Ilicic is attracting the attention of an English club other than Liverpool, according to his agent.

The Slovenian midfielder only joined Palermofrom Maribor at the end of August, along with compatriot Armin Bacinovic.

Ilicic has made an impressive start to life in Italy and, at the age of 22, is expected to go from strength to strength over the next few years.

His performances have not gone unnoticed and Liverpool were reportedly interested in trying to secure his services.

Ilicic's representative Amir Ruznic has dismissed the reports concerning the Reds, but claims to have been approached by another English club.

However, Ilicic would not be allowed to make another transfer this season, while Ruznic doubts whether Palermo will let such an exciting prospect leave next summer.

"The interest of Liverpool? I can confirm that I was contacted by a major English club that is not Liverpool," the agent told totalsport.it.

"But a transfer in the next market is impossible: the boy cannot move in January because in this season he has already played for two different clubs.

"He is happy at Palermo and has the faith of the coach and the president, while the fans love him as well.
