Title Race

I had a look at our schedule for the second half of the season and honestly it could be worse.
The most difficult away games we have are against Arsenal, Villa, Man U and I guess Everton.
However, the dropped points at home recently have left us with little to no leeway in the title race imo. I think we have to be near perfect in the remaining games to compete for the title.
If we draw against Arsenal away, which beforehand would seem like a good result, it's an even better result for Man C.

In the home game against Man C, I think we're going to be in a position where a draw just won't cut it and we have to get three points.

It is what it is, we're clearly ahead of schedule, but I feel like a lot of things have to go our way for us to win the league.

I think that's bollocks actually. All the top teams are going to drop points against the other top teams. This fawning over City "oh they are going to go on a long unbeaten run" is mind-numbing. There is no indication THIS City side is capable of that. I'm happy to see people like Darren Brentford think we'll win the title, we may not but we are right in it and it'll be close.

it's not fawning @Frogfish - we just know how they can be at the end of the season, and even though Arsenal lost today, there is not guarantee the same outcome won't happen when we play them away in the league. I actually believe we have the best team, but it just isn't synced very well. We have not really in the PL this season hammered anyone when we should have, I am really hoping we do something bad to Newcastle tomorrow, so that they can be at such a low place that when they face City they will be on their absolute A game. If we lose against them or draw against them - you can bet your bottom dollar they will lose against City in their next game.

City's last 6 PL Games : D L W D W W
We gained a point on that and it should have been more with poor VAR decisions (and finishing) costing us yet again.

Yes, I agree with this.

City might win every game from now on. They might not.

And we are more than capable of going on decent runs ourselves in the second half of the season too.

We don't know what is gonna happen, but I do know that I would rather be in the position we are in right now than in any other team's position!!

We have 12 wins out of 19. Can we now win 15 games out of 19?

27 wins, 9 draws and 2 losses = 90pts
26 wins, 9 draws and 3 losses = 87pts
25 wins 9 draws and 4 losses = 84pts

Can we win 27 games out of 38?

It's true City have a record of going on strong runs in the latter stages of the season. But guess what - so have we! Twice we have matched them stride for stride losing out by just one point each time. Once we let a few points lead slip and once we made up a significant gap on them.
So quit the doomongery of assuming City are going to run away with it and remember we can be just as awesome.
Let's go toe to toe again, and this time I am confident we'll be the team that pip them.

I'd rather them pip us on goal difference with a 100th minute goal in the final match. And then be stripped of multiple titles due to financial irregularities and be relegated to League 2.

But I'll settle for a title won on the field of play if I have to.

Both would nice and give us the retrospective titles too please. 23 sounds better than 20 to me.

You are absolutely right on this - all I can say in my defence is that our performances have not been such that we can say with any confidence that we will go on a winning run. As for City, it's the way they play and set out their intentions - regardless of how they setup - I can now say that since Pep's season with City where he won the title - I have only ever seen them once struggle to play against an opposing team in the league in terms of having any dominant possession - and that game was this season against Aston Villa where they were 2nd best to everything and could not get a grip on the game at all. I think the blip that City had was just that for this season - that was their blip for the season, I expect them to go on and beat every other team this season and maybe have a couple of draws, and maybe lose to us at Anfield.

That's the thing innit @Frogfish - we never took advantage of their so called 'blip'.
Unless we're perfect you're always going to whine and whinge. We gained a point on them and you can't blame us for VARs ineptitude (costing us at least another 5 points). Hopefully VAR will even out over a season - even though I know it doesn't always work that way.

Thing is this season it's not necessarily the case that any team would need to reel off 10 straight wins to finish first. Nobody will get close to 100 points, the standard simply isn't that high. Arsenal are about 10 points worse off this year than they were last year and are currently 2 points off the top. There's 19 games left, I reckon 14 or 15 wins probably gets us over the line. We could win a title without winning more than 3 or 4 ina row at any one time.

The sheer thought of Villa being 2 up on the final day gives me heart palpitations. For about 10/15 mins i truly believed.
When Coutinho buried his goal I did too. Couldn’t bear to watch City anymore, turned to us and when I heard it was 2-2 turned it back just as they scored for 3-2. Heartbreaking.

I think City have had their blip and it'll be business as usual for the second half of the season, which will make it very hard for any of the other challengers.

We've been getting wins but the performances have been a bit meh, we're losing players to injury and international duty... it's going to be tough to keep up.

Heart says yeah, got a shot. Head says it's a year or two too soon - we're just not consistent enough.

In the years we have lost by a point, we’ve left our fixtures against City generally saying “we should have won that but a point is good”. This season we need to get the win at Anfield (early March) and go on our own run before that to make them do the chasing.

Didn’t we lose the away fixtures in those years? Seems to me we’ve already done better already this season

I think we need to be in the position where they need to win at Anfield if we are to win the whole thing

Yeah hindsight is great but he should have kept pushing for 3-0 rather than shutting up shop

Premier league games for 2023.
Unai Emery would win the manager of the year award if it was calendar based.

I honestly think this crushed Gerrard as much as “the slip” did. This was his 2nd chance to deliver the title to Liverpool and he blew it.

Can you call yourself a fan if you want the club to fail?
from 2:05. Its not worth listening after that. Football sociopaths, they would rather see things go wrong, and say "I told you so" then be proved wrong!

Mad how Arsenal were top at Xmas and by NYD are out of the title race.

Long long way to go but great we finding ways to win.

20pts from 24pts on offer since drawing away to City.

Hard to complain about that.

Repeat that x2 and we’ll be champions.
