Liverpool centre-back Daniel Agger believes international team-mate Christian Poulsen will be "a perfect addition" to Roy Hodgson's squad.

The Denmark defender is looking forward to welcoming the midfielder to the club as the 30-year-old edges nearer completing a move from Juventus. Poulsen has been given permission to withdraw from Denmark's friendly against Germany and is believed to have been offered a three-year contract by Reds boss Hodgson, who first signed the player for FC Copenhagen in 2000.

"Christian would be a perfect addition to most of the big clubs in Europe, so he will certainly fit in here," said Agger.

"He is a top player and will make us stronger. We need to have big signings so we can compete and he is one of those players.

"Christian will improve the team. But we need more improvements if we want to be at the top of the league this season."

Agger, who has recovered from the back injury which kept him out of last week's Europa League victory over Rabotnicki, accepts Poulsen will need time to adapt to the speed of the Barclays Premier League after several years in Serie A.

However, he feels his compatriot will be the ideal replacement for Javier Mascherano, whose days at Anfield are numbered after he asked Hodgson for a transfer.

"Maybe he will find the pace of here a bit of a culture shock. He will have to get used to the extra high tempo," Agger told the Liverpool Echo.

"He has played in Italy, Spain and Germany and done very well, so I don't see any reason why he shouldn't be a success with Liverpool.

"We have Mascherano but it looks like he is leaving so there is a gap there."

Arbitrary, of course..but I think getting Poulsen will add on another 3-4 million to the Masher transfer, which in effect might even pay for itself.

Don't like the sound of "ass manager".

I like the sound of it paired with "Swedish Womens Team" or similar

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson is monitoring former Sao Paulo defender Aislan who is available on a free transfer after being released by the club. The Anfield club tried to sign the defender in 2008 but baulked at the £10 million asking price.

The 6ft 4in defender was close to agreeing a new deal at the Brazilian club but instead opted to reject the offer of a new contract and look to find a new club in Europe, with Liverpool confirmed admirers of the talented youngster.

The tall Brazilian defender has reputation for being a commanding ball playing centre-back, who at the age of 22-years-old has been tipped for a big future in the game. Hodgson is looking at adding bodies to his squad and is weighing up a number of defensive options.

The reds manager is also thought to be looking at Paul Sharner, who is also a free agent having been released by Wigan Athletic.

So where does that leave Sammy Lee?

Not that that would have worried him.

This sounds good to me.

We need someone who can head the ball if the Greek is going to leave.

Miracles are though.

Aslan ftw
^ x 10000000! I think with Aslan on board we will in all likelihood win a domestic treble. We can't afford NOT to sign him!

Aislan.

Well, there's a certain . . . erm . . . lionish quality about him.

I suppose the more accurate word would be feline, but that doesn't really conjure up the right mental image, does it?

He's described as a "ball-playing CB". Does that suggest he's another Agger type of player who won't actually be that good in the air, despite his height? And do we have room in the squad given that we've already signed Wilson?

On second thoughts, just play the lion at the back. No bugger would risk trying to go past him.

Central defence is hardly our top priority right now, though, is it?
I know, it's a bit of a luxury signing considering the gaping holes in our squad.

But not having a player who can be relied upon to head away much of the danger into the box shouldn't be underestimated. In Skrtel, Agger, and to a lesser extent, Carragher, we don't really have that, and haven't done for a while.

The Greek can do it, but he's a total one trick pony, really, and I heard he was leaving for some reason or other.

I love it!

Rafa was interested 2 years ago, and then the biggest question mark was the work permit. Can't see Roy going for Aislan tbh.
