The Mo Contract Saga

Have to say, I had the exact same thought. We’ll see soon enough if it’s true.

I think it’s more likely his head is at AFCON - while it means nothing to us, it’s massive for him and his country.

It’s entirely possible he will not want to miss it and is holding back just a little.

I don’t think any of the other nations have as much riding on one player.

Senegal look really strong.

I swear I've seen hundreds of posts on SCM about us "winning the AFCON" – surely that must mean something!

Slightly broader point than just Salah's contract, but I wonder to what extent the players feel the same as some of us about the direction of the team and a lack of investment from FSG that would keep us closer to Man City (with the caveat we'd never be able to invest in the way they do). I know there were some rumours that Salah had wanted assurances about our transfer plans but I wonder whether he will be in any way hesistant about signing a new deal if he doesn't get a sense that we will be reinforcing with players who will help us compete immediately; especially given he's at a stage of his career where he can still pretty much pick what team he goes to.

I've had similar thoughts yeah. It must be frustrating.

Salah will be sold and it'll be the same as when we sold Torres. Promised investment, got fuck all

We went out and bought Suarez & Caroll for the fee received for Torres and then went and spent another £50m in the summer window (albeit mostly on shite - Hendo, Downing, Enrique, Adam & Coates)

That was over £100m on 7 players a decade ago.

Fucking waste of money... but they did provide investment - it was a net spend of about £30m

It was the money from the sale of Ryan Babel tyhat secured Suarez not the money from Torres, beside that I agree with you

I think it was the publishing rights to his back catalog of hits we sold to fund Suarez.

We spent the Torres money on Andy Carroll and Kenny's wild summer spree of 2011 which must go down as some of the worst spending in our history

It was truly awful... although at least the Downing transfer spawned one of the best threads ever on SCM.

It wasn't that bad. Suarez alone was probably one of our best signings in the modern era. Henderson has undoubtedly more than repaid the £16M we spent on him. Bellamy was a great free transfer, and Doni was a back up keeper on a free.

Whilst neither were outstanding, Enrique and Downing were both had some decent moments

Obviously Adam, Carroll and Coates were disasters.

That’s actually making some of our more recent transfer windows when we’ve bought no-one, seem successful.

I do think retaining our key players and only selling when we want to, by offering top salary packages, combined with buying only the players we want rather than spoofing it all over some of the shite we have in past, is a good thing.

Markovic for £20m...

I’d forgotten he’d cost so much.

How much did we spend on Benteke????

Saurez cost £22.8m.

Babel was sold for £5.8m
Liverpool made several bids for Saurez
One of £12.5m or £12.8m depending on where you look
another bid of £18.3m which was also turned down

And it was not until Liverpool sold Babel that they paid the £22.8m Ajax was demanding on 28 January 2011 and was signed on 31 January 2011

Torres was still a Liverpool player on the 28th January 2011, he signed for Chelsea on 31 January 2011 the same day that Saurez became a Liverpool player

Yes.

So they sold Babel & Torres for a combined £55m and bought Suarez & Carroll for a combined £58m.

Then in the next window they spent another £55m+ and brought in about £30m in revenue.

I don’t know what you’re arguing here.

Not arguing, just pointing out
The Torres sale did not fund the Saurez deal.
Had Torres stayed we would and could have still bought Suarez

The suggestion was that Torres was going to cost whatever the fee for Carroll was plus £15m (so Newcastle were the only real winners there because they basically named their price and we got Chelsea to pay).
The other rumour I heard, probably not news to most of you, was that we held the deal for Torres up until very late in the day so Chelsea wouldn't have time to do a thorough medical on him (he did undergo a medical but it can't have been much cop given how crocked he was).
