The incredible Xabi Alonso thread 2009.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Mark, for me there's more force in the moral argument than in the footballing one. IMO he's more than earned a new deal after monstering the midfields of some of the best sides in this country and in Europe.

Fair enough, as Ibro said there's not really a right answer for this. I'm just slightly disappointed. It's probably a bit of a black and white viewpoint, but after we helped put him back on the footballing map I'm pissed off that it seems we have to buy his loyalty.

He isn't. He's a good destroyer but you need more to your game to be labelled world class in that position. Essien is much better.
He's a brilliant destroyer (just ask Kaka and the Manc midfield) and that's exactly what we need him to be in Rafa's chosen system. After Gerrard he's the LFC player whom opponents most often say they hate playing against, and they ought to know.

People quite often make the comparison with Essien, but that's not comparing like with like. Essien's a much more attacking player and that's just not the priority for a DM, especially not in a set-up like Rafa's where the DM is expected to sit back. As far as the defensive stuff goes, Essien's tackling is a lot less clean and consistent than Mascher's, and his disciplinary record proves it.

It's "horses for courses". If you want an all-action, box-to-box midfield player, there are few better than Essien. If you want - and Rafa DOES want - a specialist DM, there are none at all better than El Jefecito.
Great post.

I only compare Essien because others tend to. But essentially, they're different type of players. Essien is more comparable with Gerrard (or at least before he was moved up top) than he is Mascherano.
Essien and Kaka are the only players i would compare with Gerrard and IMO thats high praise indeed.

Indeed. My guess is that the comparison gets made because people remember the times Essien has been pressed into service at the back for Chavski, but as a midfield player he is, as you say, much more of a Gerrard Mark 1 type than a Mascher type.

I don't think we've consistently seen the best of him, he's great in his role and what he does, but that in itself is a no-nonsense (if specialist) job.

I'm not trying to play him down, maybe I'm slightly underwhelmed because he's there to do the ugly work (and just that it seems), I just think that it's debatable whether he's done enough to earn a new contract right now after we pretty much salvaged his career 18 months ago, all on the back of him having his head turned by Barca.

Maybe it's a moral issue, I'm just finding it all a bit distasteful after how much indulgence and money we've invested in him.

Should we have to throw money his say to earn a little loyalty back?
I see what you're saying Mark, and you're right in a sense that perhaps we shouldn't be seen to be rewarding an apparent "disloyal player".

But I guess that's where I'm a cynic. I would probably say, unfortunately, yes - throwing money his way would buy a little more loyalty. Perhaps it's not the weather of Spain that attracts him, but the wage packet.

You'll have some on here, typing furiously about how "players should want to play for the badge" but as I said above, I'm a cynic and believe if you're not from England let alone Liverpool, whilst you may understand and respect some of the club's traditions, you don't have to essentially 'love' the club to play or do well for us.

I guess I think of players as professionals. They're paid to play for us, respect the club's rules off the pitch and give their all on the pitch. After that, there's not much else. For me, player loyalty is a bit of a facade from a bygone era. Nowadays most players would leave the club they're at if they felt they were getting shortchanged on a contract, and there was more money elsewhere.

He should just ask and if he is on 30K/week we should respond in kind. I would be very surprised if he is on that figure though. The shit thats come out in the press via his agent needs to be sorted, sharpish.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Apparently Alonso isn't all that keen to move, instead the idea has been sold to him, as we need the revenue we'll be able to generate from his sale for more offensive players, namely Silva. And Rafa feels between Lucas and Spearing, with Gerrard if necessary we've got enough CM.

Just what I've been told, I'm not saying it's true or I believe it, just passing it on, I don't want any Mark MC treatment. Thankyouplease...very much.

Like I said, I don't necessariliy believe it. But I think it's believable enough. Rafa would say anything that he thinks would keep the fans happy anyway, and I've said before that I wonder whether Rafa's public quotes are the same as what he says in private, who knows?

With Alonso, if the club have given you indication that they're gonna sell you to the higgest bidder, and if you've worked out that the highest bidder is likely to be Madrid makes sense to start contemplating it.

All very speculative, obv.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Every morning for the past year, Benitez has summoned Alonso to the training ground and, in front of the whole squad, he's eaten Xabi's sandwiches. Then he belches and laughs, throwing the tupperware box back in Xabi's face. He's also broken all of his razors since the beginning of 2009. Xabi has to trim his stubble by rubbing his chin against a hard piece of bark, weeping softly to himself.
