I don't want any of their mentally weak cast offs. If he goes we want straight cash.

RVN mentally weak?

He'd be a decent signing but he's inury prone. Robben, Sneider, VDV, et all, are spineless.

He's too old and he's an ex-Manc. Would you really want us to sign him?

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

haven't they already signed a spaniard in raul albiol??

He's the only one I'd want (as a short-term back-up for Torres while we bring the youngsters on) and even then I'd want a very big wedge on top. Sneijder is a good player but I'm not sure where he fits into our squad, while Rafa wouldn't put up with either Robben's or (especially) Drenthe's antics for more than about 10 seconds.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

What utter wank journalism. So he's said his goodbye's without us even receiving a bid for him has he? Rubbish.
The times in some desperate bid to regain attention after getting flogged by the guardian for the last few years is barely worth reading these days.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

AS (Spanish Sports paper) are running a story saying Xabi is to hold talks with Rafa to push for a move to Madrid.

The story says that Rafa is holding out for €40M but that Madrid have only offered €24 + €2 for Arbeloa too (?!?!). The article speculates that the middle ground will be around €35M and that Liverpool's negotiator, Christian Purslow, is not in a hurry to deal and is in accord with Rafa.

NB. A related article 'bigs up' Purslow mentioning he is fluent in Castillian and was one of the main influences in the succesful RBS re-financing negotiations.

24M yoyos for Alonso, and a further 2M for Arbeloa.

Isn't that about 22M quid?

Ha. Madrid did a funny.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

€24 = £20.3M
€2M = £1.7M
€40M = £34M
€35M = £29.7M

Rate = 1.179:1

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Xabi + Arbeloa for £30M sounds about fair to me - IF we have to sell.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I think we'd struggle to replace him, even with £30M.

And if that's what they're offering for Arbeloa, we may as well just keep him for a year.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Apparently when interviewed at the end of yesterday's game he said he had no idea where he would pe playing next season.

it will be a shame no doubt

An English replacement for Xabi? Er, like who? The only one even *vaguely* in the same class as a passer of the ball is Beckham, and I can't see us signing him.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Rumours emanating from deep in the French countryside are linking David Beckham with a shock move to once fierce rivals Liverpool.
"An English replacement for Xabi and in the same class as a passer of the ball is Beckham" a source confided earlier today.
Another source also suggests that " tickets have been booked on aircraft destined for LAX

regards

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I would only sell if we can get Lucho Gonzalez from Porto who I think could slot in there and do a good job, otherwise i'm not sure.

Barry Gareth ??? :'( :'( :'(

I don't know I was just guessing that maybe he is delaying the madird green light as Rafa is trying to find a decent English relacement, get those birt numbers up.

Can Stephen Ireland become English, he doesn't play for Ireland anymore, has he got any Beatles albums or something thats english enough

Anyone name any decent English CM players who could relace Xabi?

Maybe Rafa is thinking of putting stevie back there and is waiting to get Villa, he tried that last year with Keane.

It was lack of goals in tight games that lost us the league so maybe he is finally worried about two non scoring CMs

too kind 😛

you are right lets get Beckham

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Bloody hell, we need to keep Xabi and Mascher.
There is no English replacement for Xabi, not even anyone who is currently playing in the Prem who we can buy that would be able to replace him. The best thing would be to adjust the system we play.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I really would go 442 and drop gerrard back into midfield rather than buy a mediocre midfielder and spend the money on a second striker. Why didn't we just complete the Barry deal at the begining of the window? Now it seems that we might be in a bit of a mess.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

442 won't work. We might have drop Gerrard back and buy another striker or behind Torres, but then who can we buy that will replace Gerrard in that position?

?

If Gerrard is playing in midfield and another striker is playing alongsider Torres, is that not a 4-4-2?

I'd have Sneijder if Madrid are willing to be reasonable, i.e. the price is nowhere near the 20M they paid.

why didn;t we buy Johnson in Jan for less half the price ???

We are not the best at business are we

Rafa must be stalling as he is considering how to replace Xabi, midfielder or striker+move Stevie back

We must spread the goals around more to avoid 0-0 results. Xabi and Masher together contribute fuck all in goals.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

There's not a lot in these latest reports, no so point in getting hysterical. Although now that the Confederations Cup is done I'd imagine Alonso will make his decision one way or the other.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

His silence over the last month or two is speaking volumes Anita.

Torres has been in the same South-African exile yet found time to pledge allegiance and fly the Scouse flag.

Xabi wants out methinks.

So what if he does? He's whored himself out less than Mascherano, and it now looks like HE's staying. Both have three years left on their contracts, so the decision is Rafa's, not the players'.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

And I wouldn't blame him if he did.

I think if I was in his position I'd avoid saying too much. Let's not look at this summer in isloation; it was Rafa who instigated Alonso moving away from the club last summer. Only Alonso didn't have the luxury of doing it on his own terms, so he sat tight. This summer he's making sure he gets things done on his own terms.

Either he's decided that he doesn't want to stay because he doesn't feel wanted enough because of what happened last summer, or he thinks Rafa is still looking to sell him. Either way, like I said. I don't really blame him, I'd do the same. I wouldn't wanna stay somewhere I'm not wanted.

Rafa's actions from last summer have come back to bite him in the arse, simple as.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

To be fair to Masher, any whoring appears to have been done by his agent, who at the very least would like to see his player on an improved contract, which is what you'd expect of any agent really.
