I don't believe that story - no quotes, even from 'sources close to X'. £30m would not be a bad fee (especially as we couldn't sell him for half that much last summer) but I'd still be much happier if Xabi stayed. Who could replace him?

And don't say Javi Martinez unless you've actually watched him play a few times.

[/quote]Ive watched him a few times and hes much more attacking than Xabi.
I'd go with the De Rossi vote, but i dont think it would happen, maybe Jenas. I quite like Jenas.

Oh God no.

JENAS?! To replace Xabi Alonso? Andy, if it wasn't you, I'd swear a lot and say something really quite insulting now.

Martinez, Lavezzi, Hamsik, Ivan Rakitic and Defour.

All we need is someone who can pass, hold, score no goals and get no assists. Jenas can do that.
Hopefully its all talk, and Xabi can keep getting no goals and no assists for us.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

I'd rather we get arteta, if we're talking about Xabi's replacement.

Milan are willing to let go of Pirlo, but I guess he'll be off to Chelsea if that does happen. Is he still good these days?

This isn't fantasy football. You can't put a statistic on running a game, but if you could, Alonso's would be, like, more and stuff.

Jenas is meh.

This is so aggravating. Gerrard Alonso Mascherano That's a fucking perfect midfield three, they are all so different and necessary.

He looked really good against that US (Did you see that assist for Rossi's last goal? World class) ... Italy were just gash as a unit, so he wasn't up to his usually standards.

He's the only passer in Xabi's class, but he's 30 now, isn't he? A bit old to adapt to moving to a much faster, more physical league.

top player though

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

As is usually the case it's almost impossible to replace a top player like for like.

So key is Xabi to our system it's not unthinkable we have to change or adapt our system of play.

The thought of replacing him is horrid and I'm not going to consider it any longer!

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

Mmmmmmmmmm. So Xabi has flown straight back from South africa and went straight to liverpool to say good bye to some of the club's staff. I guess he must be very close to the club staff then!

Xabi Alonso appears ready to leave Liverpool

Tony Evans, Gary Jacob

Liverpool placed a £35 million valuation on Xabi Alonso last night after the Spain midfield player said his goodbyes to some members of the club's staff. However, Real Madrid, with whom the player has been linked, have not yet made an official offer.

Alonso's relationship with Rafael Benítez has been troubled since the Liverpool manager began his pursuit of Gareth Barry last year. Although Benítez wants to keep the 27-year-old, there is a growing acceptance at Anfield that the player is likely to move to Real.

Benítez has justified paying up to £18.5 million to Portsmouth for Glen Johnson, who has joined on a four-year contract, because the right back was English. The manager has offered a new contract to Ãlvaro Arbeloa, who has one year left on his deal, but is also wanted by Real.

“We knew the market was going to be difficult this summer and some of it has been crazy,†Benítez said. “We could buy one more player without selling anyone.â€

Maybe he rang them or sent a text...

I've never read anything from Tony Evans that made me think he knows his stuff, despite his uber scouse superfan image. Like all media vermin his first concern is to generate interest and sales.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

XABI ALONSO'S Liverpool future now depends on whether Real Madrid sign David Villa this week.

But Javier Mascherano seems certain to stay after Barcelona gave holding midfielder Yaya Toure a new contract until 2012.

Villa, who has been in Confederations Cup action in South Africa, is desperate to join Real but his club Valenica are playing hardball over the price.

If Villa cannot force his exit this week, Real will step up their bid to land Alonso because president Florentino Perez MUST sign a Spaniard.

Perez, who has already landed the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo and the Brazilian Kaka, promised fans at the start of the month that he would buy at least one Spanish star.

And Real will meet Liverpool's £25m asking price for Alonso if they miss out on Villa.

Re: Xabi Alonso will stay at Anfield, says Rafa Benitez

If they MUST sign a spaniard then get the fuckers bent over.

30m plus RVN & Sneijder would be my opening request, then work down from there. I'd take those two plus 20m.

A genuine backup striker for Torres & a genuine winger plus 20m. That'll ease the pain nicely.

Sneijder isn't really a winger though mate - he's more of an attacking middie in the Benayoun mould. The only winger of quality they have available is the other Mr. Cunt (Robben)
