The Donkey

Looking at it again. Darwin is looking at the defender and Dom, so there is no need to even go full sprint. The defender isnt even looking in his direction. He can just wait on the shoulder of the defender and then go if Dom plays the ball. He doesnt have to run before the pass.

Being 3 on 2 you learn quite early that there is a bigger goal threat if you don't play towards the first movement.

I wonder who was the main culprit behind his transfer... it was obvious pretty much from day 1 that we'd fucked up.

Anyways, yes. Get rid and replace with someone good.

Ian Graham indicated Klopp pushed very hard for him after gaining more power. The data team didn't feel Nunez's ability was worth changing the entire striker profile and advocated Nkunku if memory serves as a flexible, Mane-style attacker. Injuries to Nkunu have prevented them from seeing whether they were right to an extent, but they were certainly right about Nunez. It was obvious within a few months that we were no longer going to the slick attacking force we were, and Klopp was making the best of it.

I haven't totally given up on him, but he's not needed at LW at all, and the combination of Nunez and Jota at nine is just not reliable enough. If Slot is as ruthless as fans of Feyenoord suggest then one of them will be shown the door, and Nunez will surely be the most likely.

Analyst experts out in full force this morning I see.

Anyone’s that understands the game can see there’s no urgency from Szobo to get the ball forward, if the intention is to get another goal then it makes absolutely no sense to slow down a 3v2 counter, 10 seconds later the ball fortuitously drops at Salah’s feet 5 yards out to round his hattrick, absolutely no one would care.

& what about the move where he was picked out in behind and virtually played it across to Diaz for a tap in? Should we either get on his back for not playing it closer to the keeper or lambast Diaz for his "mistimed" run?

I suspect they are not playing the ball to him more because of his potential to be offside just as much as his finishing. Nothing must be more frustrating for a midfielder who can't keep onside because it usually undoes so much good work. It's a bit different if it's a long ball over the top, but if the midfield has worked it nicely then Nunez isn't the play I'd be wanting to release at the end of it. I hate to draw comparisons to Haaland, but that android has been caught offside about 3 times in the PL. Nunez can do that in ten minutes! It hasn't been quite so bad of late, but there's been enough of it for it to linger in the minds.

The benefit of Trent is he'll keep playing that pass regardless.

Szob could've played the pass early but Nunez' run meant that it required a harder pass than necessary.

In real-time I was annoyed with Szob though.
Yes it's not an easy pass, but Szobo is right footed, he should be able to do it.
I'm not saying that he made the wrong decision though. He clearly doesn't trust him.

You dont have to play it early though. We’re 3 on 2 and the defenders are running towards their own goal. Its about timing and waiting for the right pass.
Darwin just runs into space Even when he can see that the pass isnt coming yet.

100% Haaland and Isak are waiting and then attacking the space at the right time.

Not really when you don't have to play it early.
He didn't have to play it that late either. It's not like Nunez isn't rapid. It's not the first time szob has held on to possession or make a weird decision.

At this level and at his ability, he absolutely should be making that pass.

The trust issue is a separate issue however.

When you've seen your colleague be offside about a million times and when you do put him through on goal he misses, how likely are you pass the thread through to the needle again to him, knowing 9 times out of 10 he will fuck it up
But equally you still have to make that pass regardless. Considering Nunez is our only fit striker, it's wild to me that people are saying "oh he doesnt Trust him". That's a shocking attitude for szob to supposedly have.

I don't see the point of over-analyzing on one situation. This is THE Nunez we are talking about here - one day he makes the correct run, on another day he doesn't, it's expected and that's the entire problem. He is not reliable at all and his gamesmanship (those that he mess around with the defenders and end up laying on the floor for no reason when there are hundreds of cameras on him) is frankly getting tiresome.

He will likely be shipped out this season and I am not sure if I will miss him.

Different generations

Yeah, but there must have been some overlap - at the time Larsson was at Barcelona Zlatan was already a star in Italy, so you could say Sweden did have 2 great forwards at the same time.

PS: Just looked up: according to Transfermarkt they played in 29 games together for Sweden, but only assisted each other on 3 goals, so it was not a prolific partnership by any means. I did like Larsson a lot at the time; always thought he was a classy forward.

Oh of course they played together, they were good too.

Feels very churlish of me to write this in another moment of glorious triumph, but ive had it with nunez.

When Salah played the ball to him, and he let it run past, straight to RM who then proceeded to keep the ball and eventually win the pen, that was me done. Just zero awareness.

I love him, his workrate, the fact he's unselfish, his occasional blinders. Ive been patient, stuck up for him. But he's not good enough. When diaz took his position all of a sudden our CF was in the game. Quick, smart and very dangerous.

I wish him well, but I'm out.

I thought he was good tonight despite the dumb moments but the Nunez Nunez Nunez chant is so shit I want him sold next summer
