The Curious Case of Steven Gerrard

I sincerely don't give that much of a fuck about us and our results these days - I see so little I care about in this bunch of 'footballers' I guess, but reading this news this morning genuinely saddened me. As someone said above, a little bit of me died inside hearing that news.

I don't blindly love Gerrard, he's not my favourite ever Liverpool footballer, but he's the greatest thing I've ever seen play for us, and he's been the only thing about our monotously average football side that you were never embarrassed by, never ashamed of, and for over a decade of - never not enthralled by.

The best footballer I've seen in my lifetime. This is all just sad. Sadder than I'd thought it would be.

This is that awkward period where those who have poured scorn, insulted, abused and written off Stevie's abilities in the past, (some may have even hated), feel they have to behave all compassionate and saddened because it's the normal customary reaction when such dramatic things happen. It's as if they feel slightly guilty and heartless if they do not participate in the mourning, and so they do it for the sake of doing it because their mates are doing it. But you would have rarely seen them express that same approval, compassion or loyalty when Stevie went through rough patches of his career.

Well at least one thing's consistent - the fickleness of 'these' fans.

Who are you talking about?

Maybe the news of SG leaving is the reason behind our surprisingly low-key performance yesterday. Surely they knew and surely it must have affected them since he is held by all in such high esteem.

I'm not sure who you're talking about - but it's interesting that you remember the issues Stevie went through in his career 'rough patch' wise ... This is the only one I remember, and it's not because of his skill set or ability, it's because he's being played in a position which he's never suited and hence cannot express himself.

I still don't see many of the posts yesterday, in the past few weeks, as 'insulting' or 'abusive.' People love - as Ryan put eloquently - this player. For our generation (25-35 year olds), he was our Daglish, our Keegan ... probably even more considering we ONLY won because of him ... But - as with life - everything has to end sometimes (bar taxes unfortunately) ...

Mentalists!!

Gutted he never lifted the title last season, it would have been the perfect time to bow out on an incredible and justifiable high.

as soon as he slipped i knew we'd lost the title and that would be his swan song.

I sometimes think the "Stevie G was surrounded by mediocrity" is overplayed.

He played in Liverpool sides containing Riena, Hypia, Owen, Torres, Hamman, Alonso, Mascherano, Carragher, Suarez, Kuyt - all cracking players - and Gerrard played with them when they were at the peak of their game.

Only usually one or two of them in the same side as he though.

When you look at the likes of Viera, Scholes, & Keane & the sides they played in then they were usually in sides with much better players throughout & more than a couple of stars too.

whenever we get good we weaken rather than strengthen in the following transfer window. sometimes i wonder whether gerrard actually should have left in 2005. then i remember rafa wnated to spend 20 of the 35 mill we were getting on damien duff (who was playing for fulham i think a year or so later).

fucking hate this club.

There was enough that we should have won 2 titles..... at least.

History will be unkind to us... and probably Gerrard.

Unfairly so.

The roots of this go back a long way, to the day Sir John Smith stepped down as chairman and that well-meaning buffoon David Moores took over. Too often since then LFC has been a textbook case of lions led by donkeys. Time will tell whether FSG are up to the job of really turning the tide.

Yes, I find it an irritating argument. I wonder if they look at Messi and think, 'Nah, he's surrounded by top players, he should've gone and REALLY proven himself at Bolton...' In a really top team Gerrard would have had to show much, much more discipline - the whole point of a great player being in a weak team is that he HAS to dominate, but to shine above all others in a truly great team is, i think, an even greater achievement. Not his fault, of course, but I do think the argument is way too manipulative.

Looking at the money spent and what we have got it's not looking good.

Gerrard has won everything in the game apart from the league. That's a fair reflection of how good our teams has been.

The league is won by the club with the best squad though. Whilst we've had good teams in his time, we've never had that and a good squad.

I dont post on here very often at all, prefer to watch the arguements unfold without being involved haha. For me anyone slating gerrard have obviously only been watching him for a couple of years, one of and arguably the best player this club has seen in its history, i was behind the goal against shef wednesday when he scored his first for us and have loved him ever since. I am truley gutted that he is leaving even if maybe for the best for the club but he will be missed greatly in the dressing room and on the pitch even if he has lost the athletic side that made him so good. Would love to be there for his last game but i got no chance im afraid 🙁
