Bench please..

That Midfield tonight has been the best I have seen in recent years..

Had everything.. Can was Boss.. Lucas was solid.. Henderson thrived and dictated the show...

Lallana and Coutinho where just plain Sexy..

Moving forward Gerrard must not start, judging by that performance their is certainly a case he is holding us back by trying to accommodate him.

Well in Redmen.. Great game, great performance all round.. Played with verve and freedom..

Please please Mr Rodgers take something from that and move forward with it...

I await the backlash of those who think his past means he should continue playing but when he isn't part of what can be our best lineup he has to sit up. Use him sparingly going forwards IMO.

Was gonna say something similar.

I wonder who will be left out for Gerrard.
Also, who will be left out for Gerrard and Sturridge?

I have to admit it was great to watch without gerrard his days are numbered but don't want him to leave but it's uninvitable I reckon.

Studge will replace Raheem. Gerrard can stay on the bench.
I'd even go as far as keeping Raheem on the bench when Studge gets back..

Might work to our advantage.. Avoid burning him out, therefore get more from him as an impact player..

Henderson will move out wide right against Leicester and Gerrard will start next to Lucas. No doubt.

A rotation of studge and raheem is actually quite frightening. Imagine being run ragged by one then having to cope with the other.

Yep that's what I'm thinking..

Playing like that, with the line up we had tonight, then a fresh Sterling comes of the Bench..

I'd hate to be the opposition..

Some posters will use any opportunity to attack their favorite target. Henderson and Lucas looked good – OK, let's make it all about Gerrard. This is pathetic.

Let me just remind some incredibly forgetful posters that in our other 2 best performances of the season (Spurs and Arsenal) Gerrard played all 180 minutes.

In this formation, Lallana or Coutinho.

But anyway, we probably wont have the worry too much. If not Sturridge, someone will be injured most likely.
Exactly. Raheem will need the rest and Studge will needs to be subbed once he's scored his hattrick to avoid injury 🙂

Could be tricky to do on current form.. It appears Coutinho and Lallana are starting to build a decent chemistry playing together..

Nice to have the option though

It's been obvious all season really.

Given we've also got Can who could move into the one of the midfield two slots there should be little reason to start Gerrard there now.

Best midfield in years? Really?

Can was at CB so hardly fair to say he was in midfield.

Lucas was reasonably in the 1st half - very good in the 2nd half.

Henderson was dire in the first half but popped up with an assist. He was good in the 2nd half though some of his passes were still terribly average.

What made this game tick for us was Lallana and Coutinho. The two of them playing well at the same time meant Swansea were constantly under pressure at the back. Coutinho shimmy's and turns and runs which puts them under pressure. Lallana seems to be able to beat players in a phone box. Had it not been for those two then Lucas, Henderson, Moreno and probably Can at the back would have looked far more laboured.

I hope this is a step back towards some kind of form for Henderson but he played wonderfully well with Gerrard last season. Tonight wasn't about not having Stevie there beside him but about having those two in front of him.

Gerrard will be back against Leicester and, if those front men show that level of play and movement then he'll look good as well.

The question that does get raised with this is where Gerrard plays. He shouldn't be back in a DM role as he's far more effective further forward. It would be a massive call to interfere with Lallana and Coutinho after that effort though so I'm worried as to where Rodgers is going to play him.

Balotelli also played against Spurs. Does that mean he should start?

We eased past Swansea today and we didn't really get troubled too much at the back. I honestly believe it was down to a stable midfield platform in lucas and Henderson

Lucas is a better DM the Gerrard, hendo a better presser (and based on today, better corners).

I'd say the problem is that neither Lucas or Gerrard are mobile enough to be played together in the same midfield.

Henderson & Allen are more mobile than both, so it naked sense one should play - but neither are particularly adept at either attacking or defending - they're both "all rounders" rather than specialists.

Lucas & Gerrard are more specialist players - with Lucas better defensively, while offering little going forward & Gerrard weak in defense.

A more mobile "defensive midlander midfielder" (maybe Can if he's not in defence) alongside Replacing Lucas and playing kingside Gerrard is an option.

The other option - which I'm in favour - is using Gerrard in one of the more forward roles occupied by Lallana & Coutinho - he has the passing ability and great scoring capacity than either.

Ideally, over time, Gerrard gets used more as an impact sub or occasional starter in that forward midfield role.

Exactly, and this is what I was hoping to see since Lallana was signed – a system with 2 playmakers, something similar to how Man City play with Silva and Nasri. Unfortunately early in the season Coutinho and Lallana didn't seem to have any kind of chemistry with each other – Coutinho especially seemed to treat Lallana as a threat rather than a partner and was forcing things so much that Rodgers had to drop him. Now finally the relationship our two most creative players seems to be on the mend and their combinations, dribbling and movement make a huge headache for the opposition. Credit to Rodgers: he managed to find a system that gets the best out of both Lallana and Coutinho, letting each of them shine.

After Sturridge returns and we build up some more confidence and swagger as a team, I think Rodgers will have to find a way to switch back to a system with 4 defenders, so that Sturridge, Sterling, Lallana and Coutinho can all be on the pitch together.

Yeah, I'm not sold on the system yet; I also hold my hand up that I thought a team like Arsenal would rip us to pieces with that system.

That said, Rodgers has found a way to coax more form out of Lallana and Coutinho together, he found a way to bring Lazar into the team and add to the performance rather than be a passenger. It's not a 100% success but he's also gotten a replacement striker in Sterling who, though no Sturridge, has done better there than Balo or Lambert.

It's also a system which seems, on tonight's performance, to suit Moreno and Manquillo.

He's made enough mistakes this season so fair play - this system has been a big part of our turn around. I hope he doesn't solely rely on it and uses the diamond as well but he deserves plenty of credit for this approach.
