The Cricket World Cup Thread

You've said that about quite a few players/teams Rico - surely you'll settle on one?

I see a few positives for South Africa, but this isn't a good game to lose when it was there for the taking. England's bowling finally woke up and Broad/Anderson were key. Props to them for taking what South Africa offered.

KP has been ruled out of the rest of the WC.

The England management has applied for permission to bring over Eoin Morgan, now recovered from his broken finger, to replace Pietersen.

If said permission is forthcoming, I would say that England will be better off than they were before Pietersen's injury because Morgan has proved himself capable of getting loads of quick runs coming in down the order, and on recent form a better prospect than Pietersen. The only downside is that Pietersen can be useful as an occasional spin bowler, as he was in the South Africa match.

I was hoping that we'd be able to call up Morgan for Colly (bad back) and then maybe we'd be in with a decent shout.

Personally i think this ends any hopes we might of had of actually winning the WC. I thought England & Wales were already short of a few match winners.

I am actually more optimistic now than I was a few days ago. England were looking knackered after the ridiculous one-day series in Australia, but I am thinking that following yesterday's win, they may be showing symptoms of the team that slowly gets it together in the early stages of a tournament and turns out to be very good by the final stages.

As I said, if Morgan can be added to the squad that will be a tremendous boost. He will probably be a more consistent run-getter than Pietersen.

Broad is now ruled out of the WC as well.

Disappointing but not fatal. Chris Tremlett is out there and he will be a more than adequate replacement.

Interesting goings-in in Pallekele - New Zealand scored 302 including 100 in 5 overs and have reduced Pakistan to 57-5. The Black Caps are a side that should never be underestimated.

Yeah i watched the end of the Kiwi's innings (taylor just kept smacking full bungers for 6 over mid wicket). I think they said that the 3rd 100 came off 29 balls!

So whats your side for the next game?

I'd go for:

Strauss
Swann
Trott
Bell
Bopara
Morgan
Prior
Bresnan
Yardy
Shazad
Anderson

Yeah, I would go with that. The next 2 games are in Bangladesh, aren't they? It might we worth including a third spinner, say Tredwell for Shahzad, as the wickets there never give much joy to the pacemen.

I think so (deffo the next one is).

You might have a point with regards to picking a 3rd spinner, but saying that i seem to recall Sammy and Roach doing well against them in their match. If we can get Tamim out quite cheaply i'd back this to be a one sided match.

Just wondering what odds were NZ to win this match? No reason like.

Good win for india against a fighting dutch side, yuvraj is playing really well this series.

Sri Lanka openers scored 282 for the first wicket, zimbabwe have pegged back SL to an extent by taking 6 wickets for 40 runs!

Every one of England's matches has been a nail-biter!

I couldn't help feeling pleased for the Bangladeshis, the win meant so much to them. 🙂

Yeah the half of the crowd that actually stayed to watch the end of the game certainly seemed to be loving the victory.

India should and could have won this game - poor death bowling by nehra though.

Bangladesh have just beaten the dutch so squeaky bum time for England.

heres the scenario for qualification:

England
England have no choice but to win their remaining game against West Indies to guarantee a place in the next round. With five points from five games (two wins, one tie and two losses), they have to first win their game against West Indies and hope that Bangladesh don't win both their remaining games against South Africa and Netherlands. Even if Bangladesh win both, England still have a chance to sneak through if South Africa lose two of their three remaining matches.

Bangladesh
Bangladesh have given themselves a good chance to make it to the next round. However, with a very low net run-rate, they must try to beat both South Africa and Netherlands to guarantee progress. In the event of one win, they must hope that England lose to West Indies as they will struggle to surpass West Indies' run-rate in the event the teams are tied on points.

West Indies
West Indies have an excellent net run-rate after their massive wins against Bangladesh and Netherlands. There is only a small chance that they may miss out on qualification. This can happen if they lose both their games to England and India and if Bangladesh go on to win both their matches. However, if Bangladesh win only one of their matches, it is unlikely that their run rate will match that of West Indies.

Bangladesh's win also means India haven't yet locked their quarter-final place either. If England and Bangladesh win their remaining matches, if India lose both games, and if South Africa beat Ireland, then India could be fighting for a spot with England on net run rates.

LOL!

I hope England and Pakistan both stay in and meet much later on in the tournamet they make things interesting at least

Considering they only needed to get around 2 runs per over, you would wonder what on earth persuaded the West Indies tail enders to go for that fatal second run!! ;D

england in the quarters as Bangladesh got beat

Let the jammy tight wins continue to the trophy
